Lufthansa Miles & More claims: award tickets, upgrades and refunds

Short answer: a Miles & More award passenger can receive EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation when the ticket was issued through a frequent-flyer programme available to the public. The statutory amount does not shrink because miles paid the fare. Separately, a cancellation can require return of unused miles, taxes and surcharges, while a lost upgrade may create downgrade or contractual remedies.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Identify the operating airline first. Miles & More GmbH acts as an agent for flight services, and a partner award is claimed from the carrier which performed the disrupted segment.

Do not ask one payment to solve every issue. Fixed compensation, ticket reimbursement, cabin downgrade and loyalty-account credit follow different calculations.

Award tickets are included

Article 3(3) excludes passengers travelling free or at a reduced fare not available directly or indirectly to the public, but expressly includes tickets issued under frequent-flyer or other commercial programmes. A normal Miles & More award therefore receives the same EU261 eligibility test as a cash ticket.

The fixed amount depends on route distance, final arrival, notice and cause, not the number of redeemed miles or cabin. An Economy award and a Business award on the same qualifying Lufthansa flight can each produce the same EUR 600 long-haul payment.

Companion and child awards require passenger-specific tickets and facts. An infant travelling without a separate seat can have a different reservation and fare structure, but do not assume exclusion without checking confirmed carriage.

Operating airline on partner awards

Miles & More awards can include Lufthansa Group airlines and numerous partners. The programme's current terms say the operating airline is the carrier for flight services and Miles & More GmbH acts only as agent.

Example: Miles & More issues an award with Lufthansa operating Frankfurt–New York. Lufthansa receives the EU261 disruption claim.

Example: the same programme books ANA-operated Tokyo–Frankfurt. ANA is the operator, and inbound EU261 coverage differs because the LH Group carrier status does not transfer through the award programme.

Example: Lufthansa delays a feeder and the passenger misses a United connection on one award ticket. Direct the protected-connection claim to the airline whose operated flight caused the disruption, and provide the full final destination.

Use the operating-carrier guide before submitting a partner-award case.

Reimbursement after Lufthansa cancels

When Lufthansa cancels, Article 8 gives the passenger a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. Choosing reimbursement should restore the unused ticket value in its original components: miles to the relevant account and eligible taxes, fees and airline surcharges through the payment channel.

Voluntary award cancellation rules and fees do not automatically govern an involuntary Lufthansa cancellation. Miles & More's fare-specific terms matter for passenger-requested changes, while statutory passenger rights govern carrier disruption.

Preserve:

  • mileage debit and account statement;
  • award e-ticket and fare conditions;
  • taxes, fees and surcharge receipt;
  • Lufthansa cancellation notice;
  • refund election and mileage re-credit;
  • any fee deducted from an involuntary refund.

If only part of an award was used, request a transparent calculation. A journey already flown but rendered useless can fall within Article 8 together with return to the first departure point, depending on circumstances.

Rerouting and award-seat availability

Article 8 earliest rerouting should not be treated as a voluntary award rebooking subject only to ordinary award inventory. Lufthansa must address the cancelled carriage under comparable conditions.

The absence of a publicly bookable mileage seat does not necessarily prove that no rerouting seat can be provided. Ask the operating carrier to protect the passenger on a reasonable service. If the ticket contains partners, the servicing process may require Miles & More involvement, but internal ticketing complexity should not erase the transport duty.

Do not independently cancel the award while waiting for rerouting. That can release seats and turn the record into a voluntary action. Save every proposal and reissued coupon.

Upgrade Awards and involuntary downgrade

Miles & More Upgrade Awards apply to eligible paid tickets and flight coupons under current programme terms. If Lufthansa confirms the upgrade but reroutes the passenger in a lower cabin, separate two questions:

  1. return of upgrade miles or certificates and any associated fees;
  2. Article 10 reimbursement for actual carriage in a lower class.

The 30%, 50% or 75% Article 10 calculation can be difficult where miles supplied the upgrade value. Ask Lufthansa for the affected-sector price allocation and Miles & More for the programme valuation or re-credit. Do not invent a fixed cash rate per mile.

A seat change, missing lounge access or faulty onboard feature within the confirmed cabin is not automatically a legal downgrade. Seek the price of the undelivered service where appropriate.

The Lufthansa downgrade guide explains the Mennens sector calculation.

Earning miles after a disrupted paid ticket

Passengers sometimes receive no Miles, Points, Qualifying Points or HON Circle Points after irregular operations. This is an account-credit problem, not EU261 fixed compensation.

Keep the original fare basis, boarding pass and replacement flight. Request original routing credit where programme terms allow, especially when involuntary rerouting changed the booking class. Status consequences should be documented, but there is no automatic statutory cash sum for a missing tier benefit.

Award flights themselves do not ordinarily earn Miles or Points under current terms. A passenger should not claim missing accrual which the product never offered.

Amount and currency

Eligible EU261 claims use EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger. Covered UK261 claims use GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520, with GBP 260 for defined long-haul delays between three and four hours.

Payment is monetary. Lufthansa should not substitute miles for fixed compensation without informed passenger agreement. The redeemed mileage amount does not cap or convert the statutory sum.

A family whose four award tickets qualify for EUR 600 can claim EUR 2,400 in total, while mileage and tax reimbursement is calculated from each ticket if the journey is abandoned.

Claim workflow

Submit the flight disruption to the operating airline using the e-ticket, booking code, operating-carrier proof, final arrival and cause evidence. State that the ticket was issued under a public frequent-flyer programme and cite Article 3(3) if eligibility is questioned.

Open a separate Miles & More service request for missing mileage re-credit, upgrade return or account correction. Cross-reference the Lufthansa case numbers but keep requested remedies distinct.

The Lufthansa how-to-claim guide provides the evidence order for the fixed-payment submission.

FAQ

Are Miles & More award tickets covered by EU261?

Yes. Tickets issued through a public frequent-flyer programme are expressly included.

Is compensation paid in miles?

No. Fixed compensation is monetary unless the passenger freely agrees to another form.

Does a Business award earn more delay compensation than Economy?

No. The statutory amount depends on route and disruption, not cabin or redeemed miles.

Must Lufthansa find award inventory when rerouting?

Earliest rerouting is a statutory duty and should not be limited automatically to ordinary voluntary award-seat availability.

What happens to miles used for a lost upgrade?

Request re-credit through Miles & More and assess Article 10 separately if Lufthansa actually carried the passenger in a lower cabin.
