Kenya Airways SkyTeam rerouting and replacement flights

Kenya Airways may use KLM, Air France or another SkyTeam airline for rerouting, but EU261 and UK261 do not restrict the passenger to alliance members. On a covered cancellation or missed connection, the relevant standard is suitable transport to the final destination at the earliest opportunity or a later convenient date where chosen. KQ's own Conditions also contemplate another carrier when necessary.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Use the compensation calculator to confirm that the journey is protected before applying the statutory standard. On an Africa-origin KQ flight outside EU261 and UK261, the contract remains the main rerouting basis.

The cancelled Kenya Airways flight guide helps passengers choose rerouting before considering a self-funded alternative.

What SkyTeam changes and what it does not

QuestionPractical answer
Can alliance partners make rebooking easier?Yes, shared network and ticketing relationships can help
Must KQ use only SkyTeam?No, mandatory rerouting is not confined to an alliance
Does alliance membership make partners jointly liable?No, each operator remains legally distinct
Can the passenger insist on any expensive flight?No, the option must be reasonable, comparable and suitable
Does accepting partner rerouting waive fixed compensation?Not by itself

The SkyTeam logo does not decide the claim addressee. It is a practical network fact, not a replacement for operator analysis.

Earliest opportunity means final arrival

Compare complete itineraries, not departure times. A KLM service leaving later through Amsterdam may reach the final African city before a direct KQ departure that misses the last regional connection. An Air France route through Paris can be faster on another day.

Create an option table with confirmed availability, cabin, transit conditions, baggage handling and final arrival. Screenshot it before seats disappear. Ask KQ to approve the best reasonable option in writing.

For a protected journey, the passenger is not required to wait several days solely because KQ prefers its own aircraft. UK CAA cancellation guidance expressly recognises that another airline or suitable transport can be relevant where it arrives significantly sooner.

Comparable transport conditions

Comparable does not guarantee the same seat number, meal or aircraft type. It does require a realistic journey to the ticketed destination without an unjustified downgrade or new payment.

Check:

  • confirmed rather than standby status;
  • cabin and accessibility features;
  • number and location of connections;
  • visa and transit eligibility;
  • luggage through-checking;
  • airport changes and surface costs;
  • special assistance and family seating;
  • final arrival, not merely first landing in Africa.

If only a lower cabin is available, preserving the trip may be sensible, but statutory downgrade repayment can arise on a covered itinerary.

Rerouting beyond the alliance

When a non-SkyTeam carrier has the only materially earlier practical route, ask for it. Kenya Airways' Conditions say it may carry the passenger on another carrier if necessary and may use another mutually agreed means.

The airline can examine safety, ticketing and transit feasibility. The passenger should not buy an extravagant itinerary without first requesting assistance, unless urgent circumstances make that impossible. Capture KQ's refusal or non-response and choose a proportionate fare.

The replacement cost guide covers self-purchase evidence.

One booking through Nairobi

For Europe-Nairobi-onward Africa under one reservation, rerouting must reach the final destination. A replacement ending at Nairobi is incomplete unless the passenger agrees or the original destination has become irrelevant.

If a connection is missed, ask KQ to retag baggage and preserve the onward coupon. A new regional ticket bought by KQ should not cause the original return to be cancelled as a no-show. Obtain confirmation that later sectors remain active.

Separate tickets are different. KQ may assist voluntarily, but statutory rerouting under the first ticket normally ends at its destination.

Care during rerouting

EU261 and UK261 care continues while the protected passenger waits for the selected earliest alternative. Kenya Airways should provide reasonable meals, accommodation and airport transport where the wait requires them.

An extraordinary cause may remove fixed compensation but does not shorten care to the next KQ flight if earlier rerouting is unavailable. Expenses should remain reasonable and evidenced.

For an Africa-origin journey under the KQ contract, request practical support and preserve any promise. The contractual remedy does not reproduce every European care rule, so label the claim accurately.

Fixed compensation after accepting a partner flight

Rerouting solves transport; fixed compensation addresses the disruption. A passenger can fly KLM or Air France and still claim from Kenya Airways if KQ cancelled its covered operation at short notice without an extraordinary defence.

Measure actual arrival on the replacement. For long-distance EU or UK travel, arrival within four hours can allow a 50% reduction. A reroute arriving much later can preserve the full amount.

If the partner causes a new disruption, create a second chronology. Do not merge the original KQ cancellation and a later independent partner event into one unexplained delay.

Baggage and ticket control

Ask whether bags will be transferred automatically or must be collected. Keep baggage tag numbers and the new operator's receipt. A missing bag after partner rerouting follows the baggage process and Montreal Convention, not the fixed cancellation form.

Confirm that the original ticket has been reissued rather than refunded. A voucher or fresh ticket can have different consequences for return sectors. Check the booking after reissue and save the updated coupon status.

Practical request wording

Write: “Please reroute the passenger to the final destination at the earliest opportunity. The attached option is confirmed, meets transit requirements and arrives 18 hours before the proposed KQ itinerary.” Include route, cabin, price and screenshot.

If KQ rejects it, ask for the earliest comparable alternative it will confirm. This creates a useful record without presenting a preferred luxury itinerary as the only lawful answer.

FAQ

Must Kenya Airways reroute only on SkyTeam airlines?

No. Alliance membership does not restrict statutory rerouting to alliance partners.

Can I ask for KLM or Air France?

Yes, especially where a confirmed partner option reaches the final destination materially earlier.

Does taking the replacement waive compensation?

No. Transport and fixed compensation are separate, although replacement arrival can affect a reduction.

Can rerouting end at Nairobi if my ticket ends in Entebbe?

Not without an appropriate onward solution or passenger agreement; the ticketed final destination remains Entebbe.

What if KQ refuses every earlier option?

Preserve availability and refusal, make one clear request and assess a reasonable self-purchase rather than an excessive fare.
