Kenya Airways missed connection at Nairobi: compensation and rerouting
A missed Kenya Airways connection at Nairobi can produce EUR 600 or GBP 520 when the journey began in the EU/EEA or UK, all sectors formed one reservation and final arrival was seriously delayed. A connection on separate tickets is not automatically protected, and an Africa-origin KQ journey usually does not gain EU261 or UK261 merely by ending in Europe.

Protected connection test
| Question | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Was the trip issued under one reservation? | E-ticket showing every coupon |
| Did it begin in the EU/EEA or UK? | Initial departure on the ticket |
| Which flight caused the missed connection? | Operator and movement records |
| When did the passenger reach the final destination? | Replacement pass and door-opening evidence |
| Did the passenger present correctly for transfer? | Boarding status, transfer records and contemporaneous notes |
If Amsterdam-Nairobi-Kigali was one ticket, measure at Kigali. If the Nairobi-Kigali flight was an independent booking, KQ's obligations for Amsterdam-Nairobi normally end at Nairobi unless another agreement or loss claim applies.
Minimum connection time is not the whole answer
An itinerary sold by Kenya Airways should contain a connection the ticketing system accepted. A passenger who follows transfer instructions is not automatically responsible because the remaining minutes fell below an internal minimum after the first flight arrived late.
Record when the first aircraft door opened, bus transfer ended, security was reached and the onward gate closed. If airport staff directed the passenger incorrectly or a mobility service was late, note who controlled it. These facts help assign the missed connection rather than relying on a generic “late at gate” entry.
The passenger should still move reasonably and follow instructions. Shopping, an avoidable lounge stay or failure to hold required documents can weaken the claim.
Final-destination compensation
For a covered EU-origin journey over 3,500 km, the usual amount is EUR 600. UK-origin long-distance travel can pay GBP 520. Arrival between three and four hours late can trigger a 50% reduction.
Example: Paris-Nairobi-Entebbe is delayed two hours into NBO. The confirmed onward aircraft departs before transfer can be completed, and KQ rebooks the passenger to arrive Entebbe eight hours late. If the cause was within airline responsibility, the fixed claim is assessed to Entebbe.
The result does not depend on whether the delayed sector was long or short. It depends on the protected continuous booking, final loss of time and cause.
Rerouting choices at Nairobi
Kenya Airways should provide a suitable route to the final ticketed destination. Ask for:
- the earliest confirmed KQ service;
- a partner or other carrier arriving earlier;
- a route through a different connection point where practical;
- baggage transfer or retrieval instructions;
- any entry or transit requirement;
- special assistance on the replacement.
Kenya Airways' Conditions allow travel on another carrier if necessary and another mutually agreed means. A passenger should not be left on indefinite standby where a confirmed reasonable option exists.
If KQ refuses and replacement purchase becomes necessary, photograph or save the available options before booking. The replacement flight cost guide explains proportionality.
Care during a long connection
On a journey protected from Europe or the UK, Kenya Airways must provide reasonable care while rerouting. Meals and communication are due according to the wait; overnight delay can require accommodation and airport transport.
Transit restrictions can affect how care is delivered, not whether the passenger should be left without practical support. Ask for an airside arrangement if entry to Kenya is not possible. Save written refusals and itemised purchases.
Where the journey started in Africa and no EU/UK rule applies, request assistance under the KQ contract and any relevant local law. Do not label those receipts as EU261 automatically.
Extraordinary circumstances and connection chains
Weather at Nairobi, air traffic restrictions or an airport security event may be extraordinary. KQ should identify the event, timing and how it prevented the connection. It should also explain rerouting measures.
An ordinary technical defect, crew rotation or delayed incoming aircraft is not excused merely by occurring before the regional sector. Ask for the complete causal chain. If an external event caused only the first hour but operational decisions added five more, the whole outcome needs analysis.
Care remains due on a protected journey even when fixed compensation is removed by an extraordinary cause.
Separate-ticket damage
A passenger who self-connects at Nairobi should contact the second airline immediately and request fare flexibility. Travel insurance may cover the replacement. A Montreal Convention claim against the first carrier can be considered for proven loss caused by delay, subject to reasonable foreseeability, mitigation and defences.
Keep both ticket purchase times. A replacement fare bought before the first delay became certain may be harder to justify. Record why a cheaper or later option could not serve the trip.
Do not rewrite the two bookings as one in the claim. Accurate disclosure allows the correct contractual and Convention arguments to be assessed.
Claim evidence
Save the complete original itinerary, all boarding passes, operator entries, final gate time, first-arrival record, transfer instructions, rebooking and final arrival. Add photographs of airport displays only where flight details and timestamps are readable.
Submit a covered KQ-operated case through the dedicated EU/UK disruption portal. State the final destination prominently and attach the through ticket. Put hotel, meals and replacement transport in a separate table.
The current KQ Conditions state that a substantive complaint response is provided within 21-30 working days. Challenge any decision that stops its timing calculation at Nairobi despite a documented continuous reservation.
FAQ
Does a Nairobi missed connection qualify for EUR 600?
It can when the journey began in the EU, remained one reservation and reached its final destination late enough.
Are separate tickets protected as one journey?
Normally not. Each contract is assessed separately, although proven Montreal loss or insurance may help.
Must Kenya Airways reroute me on another airline?
Ask for a suitable earlier confirmed option; KQ's own Conditions allow another carrier where necessary.
What if I could not enter Kenya for a hotel?
Tell KQ immediately and request an appropriate airside or transit-compatible care solution, then record the response.
Which time should I put in the claim?
Use actual door opening at the final ticketed destination and include the Nairobi transfer chronology.
