Kenya Airways Europe-Africa connections: EU261 and UK261 coverage

A Kenya Airways journey that starts in the EU/EEA or United Kingdom and continues through Nairobi on one reservation can remain protected until the final African destination. If a disruption on the KQ long-haul or onward sector causes arrival at least three hours late, fixed compensation can reach EUR 600 or GBP 520 per passenger. The same itinerary in the opposite direction is normally outside European rules when Kenya Airways operates from Africa.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Check the complete connected ticket. Do not enter Nairobi as the destination when the reservation continues to Entebbe, Kigali, Mombasa, Zanzibar or another city.

The Kenya Airways compensation overview explains why the protected starting point can remain relevant beyond Nairobi.

The one-booking test

Booking patternLikely treatment
Amsterdam-Nairobi-Entebbe issued togetherOne protected EU-origin journey to Entebbe
Heathrow-Nairobi-Mombasa issued togetherOne protected UK-origin journey to Mombasa
Paris-Nairobi ticket plus separately bought Nairobi-ZanzibarTwo contracts; Paris journey normally ends at Nairobi
Entebbe-Nairobi-Paris operated by Kenya AirwaysAfrica-origin journey, normally outside EU261
Paris-Nairobi on KQ and onward on a partner under one ticketFinal destination can still control, with operator assigned per sector

One booking reference is strong evidence, but the e-ticket coupon structure and through issuance are more important than a visual itinerary assembled by an application. Keep the fare receipt and ticket numbers for all sectors.

Final delay is measured beyond Nairobi

Suppose Paris-Nairobi arrives two hours late. The passenger misses the protected Nairobi-Entebbe connection and KQ reroutes them to a service six hours later. EU261 delay is measured at Entebbe, not Nairobi, because Entebbe is the final destination of the single reservation.

The same principle can apply when the later flight was not itself departing the EU. The territorial link comes from the initial covered departure. European case law treats directly connected sectors issued together as a whole for compensation scope.

For UK261, use the same factual discipline: first UK airport, continuous ticket and final arrival. Record door opening at the last destination.

Separate tickets create a different risk

Passengers sometimes buy the Europe-Nairobi long-haul from KQ and a cheaper regional flight independently. The second airline has not necessarily agreed to protect the connection. If the first flight arrives two hours late and the separate ticket is missed, the EU261 fixed-delay threshold on the first contract may not be met.

Possible recovery then depends on fare flexibility, travel insurance and provable Montreal Convention loss. The passenger should show that the replacement purchase was reasonable and that damage was mitigated. Do not describe the second ticket as statutory rerouting unless Kenya Airways accepted it as part of the original carriage.

The missed Nairobi connection guide explains airport evidence and rebooking.

Operator changes on European feeder sectors

Kenya Airways sells European feeders operated by KLM, Air France, Air Europa, British Airways and others. Identify which carrier caused the disruption.

Examples:

  • KLM cancels Berlin-Amsterdam, causing the KQ long-haul to be missed: KLM is the operational addressee for that event;
  • Kenya Airways cancels Amsterdam-Nairobi after the feeder arrives: KQ handles the EU261 cancellation claim;
  • KQ delays Nairobi-Entebbe on the protected outbound reservation: final arrival remains relevant and KQ operated the affected sector;
  • an agent only issued the ticket: the agent may process fare repayment but is not automatically the statutory operating carrier.

Save the original operated-by lines before the reissued itinerary changes flight numbers.

Compensation band for Africa connections

Most Europe-Nairobi-onward journeys exceed 3,500 km, placing them in the long-distance band. The standard EU261 amount is EUR 600 and the UK261 equivalent is GBP 520.

For a delay that ends between three and four hours late, a 50% long-distance reduction may apply. For cancellation, alternative arrival within the relevant four-hour window can also support reduction. Calculate distance to the final destination under the governing rule rather than adding sector distances manually.

Each eligible passenger has an individual fixed claim. Shared hotel rooms, taxis and meals are reimbursed according to real expense and should not be multiplied as if they were fixed sums.

Rerouting after a missed connection

Kenya Airways should arrange transport to the final destination at the earliest reasonable opportunity on a covered disruption. Ask for KQ and partner services, including a suitable different airline if that route arrives substantially earlier. KQ's Conditions of Carriage expressly contemplate another carrier when necessary.

Confirm whether checked baggage is retagged, whether an entry permission is needed during a long wait in Nairobi and whether special assistance has been transferred. Do not accept standby as equivalent to a confirmed seat without understanding the risk.

If KQ refuses a workable alternative and the passenger buys a replacement, capture availability, price and arrival before purchase. Choose a proportionate class and retain the refusal.

Care during the Nairobi wait

For a journey protected from Europe or the UK, reasonable meals and communication remain due during the wait. An overnight connection can require accommodation and transport. Extraordinary circumstances can remove fixed compensation but do not remove care.

Ask KQ for the arrangement before paying. If no support is provided, keep itemised receipts and a record of the request. Where immigration restrictions prevent leaving the transit area, document that fact and the options offered inside the airport.

Evidence checklist

Build one sequence containing:

  1. full e-ticket from Europe or the UK to the last African airport;
  2. operator for each sector;
  3. original and replacement boarding passes;
  4. scheduled and actual arrival at Nairobi;
  5. missed-connection notice and reason;
  6. KQ rerouting proposals;
  7. final door-opening time;
  8. care and replacement-travel receipts.

Submit a KQ-operated EU or UK claim through the dedicated disruption portal. Lead with initial departure and final destination so the case is not assessed only as an African regional flight.

FAQ

Does EU261 continue from Nairobi to another African city?

It can when the journey began at a covered EU airport and all sectors were issued as one reservation.

What if the regional connection was bought separately?

The contracts are normally assessed separately, and the missed second ticket is not automatically protected rerouting.

Which arrival time controls compensation?

Use door opening at the final ticketed destination on the continuous booking.

Can Kenya Airways use another airline for rerouting?

Yes. Its Conditions contemplate another carrier where necessary, and statutory rerouting focuses on a suitable final journey.

Is the Africa-to-Europe return protected too?

Normally not under EU261 or UK261 when Kenya Airways operates a journey that begins in Africa.
