JetBlue damaged baggage: report, evidence and deadlines

Photograph JetBlue baggage damage before leaving the airport and obtain a written report. JetBlue's current domestic contract requires initial notice within four hours and a written claim within 21 days. For international carriage, written damage complaint is due within seven days after receiving the bag. Domestic liability is capped at USD 4,700 per passenger; international baggage generally uses 1,519 SDR.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Normal wear is different from transport damage. Preserve the suitcase before repair or disposal. The JetBlue delayed and lost baggage guide explains tracing and contents loss.

Inspect before leaving arrivals

Check wheels, handles, frame, shell, zips, locks and contents. Photograph the bag on the airport floor with baggage tag visible. For internal damage, take an overview and close-up without discarding broken parts.

Report to JetBlue baggage service and obtain:

  • file reference;
  • damage description;
  • date, flight and airport;
  • baggage tag number;
  • repair or replacement instructions;
  • contact channel for written follow-up.

A verbal statement to an employee may not satisfy written notice. Send the claim through the official channel within the short deadline even if JetBlue asks the passenger to obtain an estimate later.

JetBlue's domestic contract also states legal action must begin within one year after written denial. Do not confuse that litigation period with the four-hour evidence deadline.

Normal wear versus compensable damage

Airlines commonly exclude ordinary scratches, scuffs, dirt, minor dents, protruding parts and damage caused by inherent defect or overpacking. A cracked shell, torn structure, missing wheel, broken telescopic handle or crushed contents can be stronger evidence of transport damage.

The age and condition before travel matter. Use a pre-trip photograph, purchase receipt or image taken at check-in. A heavily worn bag may have lower remaining value.

Security inspection damage can involve a government screening authority rather than JetBlue. Look for an inspection notice and ask which entity handled it. Do not assume airline responsibility without tracing the cause.

Repair, replacement and depreciation

JetBlue may offer an approved repair service, comparable replacement or cash based on depreciated value. Give the airline a chance to inspect before arranging irreversible repair. If urgent repair is necessary, photograph everything and obtain a detailed invoice.

Replacement does not always mean the original retail price of a new premium suitcase. The objective is covered actual loss, considering age and condition, up to the applicable ceiling. Ask for the depreciation method if the offer appears low.

If the bag cannot be repaired, obtain a written professional statement. Keep the damaged item until JetBlue authorises disposal.

If JetBlue asks the passenger to ship the suitcase for inspection, obtain written instructions about packaging, carrier and postage. Keep tracking and claim reasonable shipping cost where the airline did not provide a prepaid label. Photograph the packed condition so later transit damage is not confused with the original airport event.

Damaged contents

List each damaged item separately with photograph, age, purchase proof and repair or current value. Restricted checked items such as electronics, jewellery, fragile objects or cash may be excluded or limited under the Contract of Carriage.

Leakage from an improperly packed item or overfilled suitcase can support an inherent-defect defence. Explain packing and any external crushing evidence honestly.

The 1,519 SDR international limit is generally combined across bag and contents for one passenger. It is not a separate ceiling for every object.

Mobility devices are different

Wheelchairs and other assistive devices receive special protection. On domestic travel, DOT requires compensation up to the original purchase price for a lost or damaged assistive device, rather than applying the ordinary baggage cap in the same way. Request JetBlue's Complaint Resolution Official immediately and arrange a suitable temporary device.

International valuation can depend on the Montreal Convention and applicable disability rules. Keep make, model, serial number, repair estimate and functional impact. Do not accept an unsuitable substitute that creates a safety risk.

The JetBlue family and accessibility guide covers assistance and group evidence.

Fee refund and separate flight claims

DOT rules require refund of a checked-bag fee when the bag is significantly delayed under the applicable timing standard and the passenger reports it. Damage alone may be handled through the baggage claim and service refund terms. Request each item separately.

A damaged bag does not itself create EUR 600 or GBP 520. If the flight also had a qualifying protected delay or cancellation, submit that statutory claim in another section. Avoid counting a contents purchase both as baggage damage and airport care.

Claim file

Include ticket, tag, airport report, photographs, pre-travel condition, receipt, age, repair estimate, contents inventory and correspondence. State the applicable deadline and amount requested. If JetBlue offers replacement, document its specifications and value.

For a family with several bags, identify which passenger checked each item. Liability and proof are passenger-based, not simply one limit per reservation.

Example

A JetBlue passenger receives a cracked suitcase after Amsterdam-Boston. They report at the airport, send written notice the next day, retain the bag and obtain a repair-impossible statement. The international claim can include depreciated suitcase value and covered damaged contents within the 1,519 SDR ceiling. EU261 is irrelevant unless the flight itself was also disrupted.

This page reflects rules checked on 14 August 2026. Recheck SDR conversion and current federal limits when valuing the claim.

FAQ

Is a scratch compensable baggage damage?

Minor wear is commonly excluded. Structural damage or loss of function is more likely to support a claim.

How fast must international damage be reported?

Send written complaint within seven days after receiving the damaged baggage.

Can I throw the suitcase away?

Not before JetBlue inspects or authorises disposal. Preserve it with photographs and repair evidence.

Does the ordinary USD 4,700 cap apply to a wheelchair?

Domestic assistive-device rules can require up to original purchase price, so request specialist handling immediately.

Can I claim both repair and replacement?

Not as double recovery. The remedy should restore the covered loss using repair, comparable replacement or proven value.
