JetBlue delayed and lost baggage claims

Report a missing JetBlue bag before leaving the airport, keep the file reference and claim necessary interim purchases with itemised receipts. JetBlue's current domestic liability limit is USD 4,700 per passenger. International carriage generally uses the Montreal Convention limit of 1,519 Special Drawing Rights. These are ceilings, not automatic payments, and baggage claims are separate from EU261 or UK261 flight-delay compensation.

Do not wait for the flight disruption complaint. Short baggage deadlines need their own file. The JetBlue damaged-baggage guide covers physical damage.

Immediate airport steps

  1. Go to JetBlue's baggage service before leaving the arrivals area.
  2. Show the baggage tag and boarding pass.
  3. Describe the bag, contents and identifying features accurately.
  4. Confirm delivery address and contact details.
  5. Obtain a written file reference and tracking instructions.
  6. Photograph the tag receipt and report.

JetBlue's domestic contract requires initial notice of loss or damage within four hours after arrival. Even on international travel, immediate reporting is the safest evidence. An application search alone may not create the required claim.

Delayed versus lost

A delayed bag remains under tracing and may be delivered later. A lost bag is one the airline declares lost or cannot return after its tracing period. The legal and valuation claim develops as facts change.

Do not exaggerate contents. An unsupported high-value inventory can undermine otherwise valid essentials.

Domestic JetBlue limits and deadlines

JetBlue's April 2026 Contract of Carriage sets domestic checked-baggage liability at USD 4,700 per passenger, consistent with the current federal minimum. The limit caps proven loss; it does not guarantee USD 4,700 for every missing suitcase.

The contract requires initial notice within four hours and a written claim within 21 days. It provides a one-year period for legal action after JetBlue's written denial of a domestic baggage claim. Mandatory law can affect contractual terms, but passengers should meet the shortest clear deadline.

Reasonable delayed-bag purchases depend on destination, duration and what was unavailable. A toothbrush and basic clothing during a trip are easier to justify than replacing an entire wardrobe. At home, the need can be lower because the passenger has other belongings.

International Montreal Convention claims

For international carriage, JetBlue's current contract states a 1,519 SDR baggage liability limit per passenger. SDR is an International Monetary Fund unit whose currency value changes. Calculate it on the legally relevant conversion date rather than treating it as USD 1,519.

Written complaint for baggage delay must be made within 21 days after the bag is made available. Court action under the Montreal Convention is extinguished after two years. A missing bag should still be reported immediately and supported in writing well before those boundaries.

The 1,519 SDR ceiling covers checked baggage loss, damage and delay combined for the passenger, unless a valid higher-value declaration was made. It does not multiply for each item inside one bag.

Interim purchase reimbursement

Buy items reasonably necessary while away from home: basic toiletries, underwear, simple clothing or essential equipment appropriate to the trip. Keep the itemised receipt, proof of payment and explanation of need. When the bag arrives, stop making delay purchases.

JetBlue or its administrator may depreciate durable items that the passenger keeps. That is not necessarily improper, but request the calculation. Rental can be more reasonable than purchase for specialist equipment.

When JetBlue delivers the bag, inspect it before signing an unqualified receipt. Record delivery date and time because the 21-day international written-complaint period runs from the bag becoming available.

Medication and accessibility equipment require immediate communication. Do not delay essential health needs while waiting for ordinary baggage tracing; contact JetBlue and appropriate assistance services.

Valuing a lost bag

Create an inventory with item, brand, age, purchase price, current value and evidence. Receipts, photographs from before travel, warranty records and bank entries can support ownership. Used items are normally valued with depreciation, not replacement-new price.

For a hard-shell suitcase, include the bag itself. Jewellery, electronics, cash and other valuables can be restricted in checked baggage under the contract. Read exclusions before making assumptions.

If one suitcase contained belongings of several family members, liability can depend on whose baggage was checked and evidence of each passenger's property. List ownership clearly.

EU261 flight compensation is separate

EU261 and UK261 do not pay fixed amounts simply because baggage was late. If the JetBlue flight itself also arrived at least three hours late on a protected departure, the passenger may have a separate EUR or GBP claim. Keep the JetBlue delay guide as another file.

The same receipt cannot be recovered twice through baggage, airline care and travel insurance. Maintain a payment ledger.

Codeshare and final carrier

On an international journey involving several airlines, Montreal rules can allow claims against the first, last or carrier performing the segment where loss occurred, depending on the issue. Start the airport report with the carrier handling arrival baggage and preserve every tag.

A B6 marketing code does not identify who accepted the bag. The tag routing and operating flights provide better evidence.

Submission pack

Attach report, baggage tag, ticket, delivery record, receipts, inventory, ownership proof and bank details only through an official secure channel. Keep copies and confirmation. State separately the delayed-bag expenses and lost contents value.

This guide reflects limits and contract terms checked on 14 August 2026. SDR value and federal limits should be rechecked on the claim date.

FAQ

Does JetBlue automatically pay USD 4,700 for a lost bag?

No. USD 4,700 is the current domestic ceiling; the passenger proves actual value and covered loss.

What is the international baggage limit?

JetBlue's current contract uses 1,519 SDR per passenger under the Montreal Convention, subject to its terms.

How long do I have for delayed international baggage expenses?

Send written complaint within 21 days after the bag is returned.

Can I buy replacement clothes?

Reasonable essentials can be reimbursable, especially away from home, with itemised receipts and explanation.

Is baggage delay worth EUR 600 under EU261?

No. Fixed flight compensation requires a separate qualifying flight disruption; baggage uses its own liability system.
