Iberia delayed, lost or damaged baggage: claims and deadlines

Open an Iberia Property Irregularity Report before leaving baggage reclaim whenever possible. A PIR starts tracing but is not a complete monetary claim. Under the Montreal Convention, checked-baggage damage must generally be complained of in writing within seven days of receipt and delay damage within 21 days after the bag is returned. The current liability limit is 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger, not EUR 1,519 and not an automatic payout. Court action is generally subject to a two-year period.

Iberia says a passenger arriving on an Iberia Group-operated flight should open a PIR before leaving baggage reclaim and contact its Baggage Service Centre with further contents information if the bag remains missing after 72 hours. This operational 72-hour step does not replace Convention deadlines.

PIR is not the compensation claim

The PIR records the irregularity and creates a tracing code. Keep it, but submit a written claim for money with identified losses. Iberia's claims page asks for the PIR number, flight and passenger details, expense description and receipts for delayed-baggage purchases.

Preserve ticket, boarding pass, baggage tag, PIR, tracking history, delivery time, photos, receipts, inventory and correspondence. If an airport desk refuses a PIR, record the desk, time and staff response and open Iberia's online PIR immediately.

Delayed baggage purchases

The Montreal system compensates proved damage, not inconvenience as an automatic lump sum. Buy reasonable essentials for the circumstances: basic toiletries, suitable clothing and necessary local transport to obtain them. A holiday destination may justify more immediate replacement than arrival at home, where the passenger has access to belongings.

Keep itemised receipts and explain each item. Luxury purchases and complete wardrobe replacement are harder to recover. Iberia may assess ongoing usefulness and proportionality. Submit promptly after delivery and within the 21-day written period.

The 21 days run from the date the bag is placed at the passenger's disposal, not the flight date. Record the delivery timestamp and courier note.

Damaged baggage

Inspect the bag before leaving the reclaim area. Photograph the entire case, damage, tag and belt surroundings. Open a PIR and retain the bag until Iberia can inspect it or confirms disposal.

Normal wear such as minor scratches can be treated differently from a broken wheel, split shell, torn fabric or missing contents. Obtain a repair estimate or written finding that repair is uneconomic. Send the written complaint no later than seven days after receiving checked baggage; airport reporting alone may not safely satisfy a quantified claim.

When a delayed bag becomes lost

The Montreal Convention permits the passenger to enforce rights for loss when the carrier admits loss or checked baggage has not arrived after 21 days from the date it should have arrived. Iberia may request a contents form after 72 hours to improve tracing.

Create an inventory with item, owner, age, original cost, current value and proof. Replacement cost is not automatically the measure; depreciation and evidence matter. High-value electronics, money, documents and jewellery often face carriage-condition limitations when placed in checked baggage.

The 1,519 SDR limit

ICAO increased the baggage liability limit to 1,519 SDR per passenger from 28 December 2024. SDR is an IMF accounting unit whose currency value changes. It is a ceiling for proved loss, not a standard payment.

If necessary purchases total EUR 210, the passenger does not receive 1,519 SDR. If proved loss exceeds the ceiling, recovery may be capped unless a special declaration of interest or another exception applies. The limit is per passenger, not per suitcase. For family baggage, identify who owned the contents and each traveller's ticket.

Codeshare and successive carriage

Baggage may pass between Iberia, Iberia Express, Air Nostrum and partners. Montreal Convention rules can allow claims involving the contracting and actual carrier and successive carriage. Do not apply the EU261 operating-carrier rule mechanically.

Open the PIR at the final airport and retain every tag and carrier code. If airlines redirect the passenger between them, ask for the legal and factual reason in writing. The Iberia operator guide helps identify roles but baggage liability remains its own analysis.

Flight disruption and baggage loss are separate

A late flight can also qualify for EU261 fixed compensation. The bag claim remains based on the Montreal Convention and proved loss. Example: Iberia reaches Madrid four hours late and the suitcase arrives two days later. The passenger may have a fixed flight claim plus reasonable baggage purchases; one is not deducted from the other.

Use different headings and amounts in the submission. The Iberia claim-form guide is for flight disruption; Iberia's Baggage Service Centre handles PIR and baggage evidence.

Insurance and package travel

Notify travel insurance or a card insurer within its own deadline. It may cover losses above or outside what Iberia accepts, subject to conditions and no double recovery. Keep Iberia's decision and list every payment by item.

For a package, notify the organiser too. That does not replace the carrier claim. A package remedy may address holiday performance while the Montreal claim addresses baggage damage.

When several passengers share one suitcase, identify whose belongings were inside and attach each traveller's ticket. The liability ceiling is per passenger, but that does not make an unsupported family inventory recoverable several times. Allocate each item once, show ownership where possible and distinguish a child's clothing from the adult account holder's purchases. This is especially important when one baggage tag was attached to the lead passenger although the contents belonged to the whole family.

FAQ

Is a PIR enough to claim baggage expenses?

No. It starts tracing and documents the event. Submit a separate written, quantified claim with receipts and the PIR number.

When must damaged baggage be claimed?

Generally within seven days after receipt of checked baggage. Report it immediately at the airport as well.

When does the 21-day delay period start?

The written complaint period runs from when the baggage is made available to the passenger. Record the delivery date and time.

Does Iberia automatically pay 1,519 SDR?

No. It is the current ceiling per passenger. The claimant must prove actual loss.

Can I claim flight compensation and baggage expenses?

Yes, if both sets of conditions are met. They have different legal bases, evidence and deadlines.
