Iberia cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation

After an Iberia cancellation, choose between a refund and rerouting; do not let a voucher screen make that decision silently. Fixed compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 may be additional when notice was late, the replacement did not fit the statutory timing windows and Iberia cannot prove extraordinary circumstances. Notice timing, operating carrier and the replacement arrival must all be documented. Care applies while the passenger waits, whatever the cause.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Four questions decide the claim

  1. Who operated the cancelled flight?
  2. When did cancellation notice reach the passenger?
  3. What rerouting was offered and when did it arrive?
  4. What caused the cancellation and what mitigation was attempted?

An IB code can be operated by Iberia Express, Air Nostrum or a partner. Direct the statutory claim to the operator. For an inbound non-EU flight, operator identity can also decide whether EU261 applies at all.

Refund and rerouting are alternatives

Article 8 gives a choice after cancellation:

ChoiceWhat it means
reimbursementunused ticket value, and used parts no longer serving the travel plan where applicable
earliest reroutingcomparable transport to the final destination as soon as reasonably possible
later reroutingtravel on a later date convenient to the passenger, subject to seats

Accepting reimbursement normally ends Iberia's duty to carry the passenger on that ticket. Accepting rerouting does not waive a separate fixed compensation claim. Ask for the option you actually want in writing.

If Iberia offers a flight days later while a reasonable same-day seat exists, request that alternative and capture its availability. Self-booking can be recoverable when Iberia fails to provide required rerouting, but give the airline a documented opportunity first and keep the purchase proportionate.

The 14-day notice rule

Notice at least 14 days before scheduled departure normally removes fixed cancellation compensation. Notice less than seven days before can still avoid it if the offered rerouting departs no more than one hour earlier and reaches the destination less than two hours late. For notice between seven and 14 days, the corresponding windows are two hours earlier and four hours later.

Use the moment the passenger received the message, not simply the date Iberia changed an internal reservation. Preserve email headers, SMS timestamps, app alerts and agency messages. When an intermediary delayed forwarding notice, liability can require careful fact analysis; do not assume the airline's internal timestamp ends the question.

Compensation remains separate

Eligible cancellation amounts follow itinerary distance: EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. A family of three has three individual claims. Ticket price does not cap the amount.

For long-haul rerouting, Article 7 can permit a 50% reduction when the replacement arrival falls within the relevant window. A EUR 600 claim may become EUR 300, but only after the timing test. The EUR 600 guide explains this calculation.

Voucher consent must be real

EU261 specifies monetary reimbursement, with vouchers only where the passenger agrees. The Court of Justice in Cobult held that a passenger's online selection can amount to signed agreement when the choice is free and informed and the airline provides clear, complete information. It does not make every preselected or confusing voucher flow valid.

Before clicking, record the cash option, voucher terms, expiry, transferability and any release wording. If a voucher was selected without a meaningful cash explanation, preserve screenshots and challenge the quality of consent. Do not spend the voucher while disputing whether it should have been cash.

Care while waiting

Iberia owes reasonable meals and communication, plus hotel and airport-hotel transport when rerouting requires an overnight stay. Extraordinary weather does not remove these duties. If support is absent, retain itemised receipts and evidence that assistance was requested.

Care ends when the passenger chooses a refund and abandons the journey, subject to expenses already incurred while waiting. It also does not cover unlimited luxury. Select a reasonable hotel and transport option in the circumstances.

Cancellation or schedule change?

Iberia may present a major schedule movement as a change. Court of Justice case law treats a flight brought forward by more than one hour as cancellation for EU261 purposes. A replacement flight number is useful evidence but not essential; the practical abandonment of the original transport plan can be decisive.

Compare the original and revised itinerary. Preserve both documents before accepting a change. A move to another airport may also create a transfer duty.

Cause and reasonable measures

An airport closure, external security event, severe weather or binding ATC restriction can be extraordinary. Routine technical faults and resource planning generally cannot be excused by a bare label. Iberia must establish the actual event, causal link and reasonable response.

Ask why this flight was cancelled, whether other services operated, which alternatives were examined and how the aircraft and crew rotation was managed. The rejected-claim guide shows how to test the answer.

Submission checklist

Keep the booking, e-ticket, original itinerary, cancellation notice, proof of receipt time, every rerouting offer, replacement boarding pass, final arrival and receipts. State separately: chosen Article 8 remedy, fixed compensation, Article 9 care costs and any replacement transport.

Submit through the Iberia claim form and save the confirmation. If an agency sold the ticket, it may handle the fare refund, but the operating airline remains the normal respondent for fixed EU261 compensation.

Where an agency controls the booking, send parallel but clearly different requests. Ask the agency to process the unused ticket value and ask the operating carrier to assess compensation, care and rerouting failure. Preserve both references. Do not let either party close the file merely by pointing to the other without stating which remedy it refuses to handle.

FAQ

Does every Iberia cancellation pay compensation?

No. Notice timing, rerouting windows, territorial coverage, operator and extraordinary circumstances all matter. Refund or rerouting still applies to a protected cancellation.

Can Iberia force me to take a voucher?

No. Voucher reimbursement requires agreement. An online choice can be valid only when it is free and informed with clear information.

Can I take rerouting and still claim EUR 600?

Yes, if the separate compensation tests are met. Fast rerouting may reduce a long-haul amount to EUR 300 under the statutory timing rule.

Does bad weather remove hotel rights?

No. It can remove fixed compensation if properly proved, but reasonable care and rerouting duties continue.

What if Iberia calls the cancellation a schedule change?

Compare the original and replacement service. A substantial advancement, including more than one hour under Court of Justice case law, can be treated as cancellation.
