Ethiopian Airlines London Heathrow to Addis Ababa compensation

An Ethiopian Airlines-operated journey departing London Heathrow can qualify under UK261 for GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger. Heathrow to Addis Ababa is in the long-distance band, so an eligible arrival delay of more than four hours can reach GBP 520; an arrival between three and four hours can produce GBP 260. The reverse Ethiopian-operated journey beginning in Addis Ababa normally falls outside UK261.

The same outbound protection can continue to a final African destination when Heathrow-Addis Ababa and the onward sector form one confirmed booking. Check the complete itinerary, not only the first boarding pass.

Heathrow departure opens the UK261 test

UK passenger law covers flights departing a UK airport regardless of whether the operating airline is British, European or foreign. Ethiopian's nationality therefore does not prevent protection on the outbound Heathrow journey. For arrivals into the UK, the carrier condition is narrower; Ethiopian is not a UK or EU carrier, so a separate Addis Ababa-Heathrow flight normally does not qualify.

Heathrow-Addis Ababa-Nairobi, one ticketCan be covered to Nairobi
Heathrow-Addis Ababa-Cape Town, one ticketCan be covered to Cape Town
Addis Ababa-HeathrowNormally not covered

A UK billing address, British passport or London travel agent cannot make an African-origin journey covered. Equally, buying the outward and return flights together does not remove protection from the Heathrow departure.

Measure delay at the last ticketed airport

For a direct Heathrow-Addis Ababa flight, compare scheduled arrival at ADD with the time passengers could leave the aircraft. Touchdown is not the legal arrival time. For a continuous Heathrow-Addis Ababa-Lusaka booking, use arrival in Lusaka if the disruption caused a missed connection and late final arrival.

This can change a result. The first aircraft might reach Addis Ababa only two hours late, yet the passenger may miss the protected connection and reach the final destination seven hours late. Conversely, a four-hour departure delay can shrink below three hours by final arrival and produce no fixed delay payment.

Separate tickets do not receive the same treatment automatically. If Heathrow-Addis Ababa and Addis Ababa-Lusaka were independent purchases, Ethiopian may still owe rights on the first contract, but the second ticket's lost value is not automatically UK261 rerouting. See the Addis Ababa missed-connection guide.

How GBP 520 is calculated

The UK scheme uses three distance bands. A Heathrow-Addis Ababa journey exceeds 3,500 kilometres and therefore sits in the long-haul category.

Final arrival delay on a qualifying long journeyFixed amount per passenger
Less than 3 hoursGBP 0 for delay alone
3 to 4 hoursGBP 260
More than 4 hoursGBP 520

Cancellation and rerouting use their own timing rules. The full GBP 520 can apply after short-notice cancellation when the replacement arrives sufficiently late; a GBP 260 reduction can apply within the statutory window. Each passenger is assessed independently. Three eligible travellers can therefore have a combined fixed claim of GBP 1,560.

The ticket price does not set the fixed figure. A low fare or ShebaMiles redemption can still qualify. The amount guide compares the UK calculation with EUR 600 on EU departures.

Cancellation creates a choice before compensation

When Ethiopian cancels a covered Heathrow departure, it must offer reimbursement or rerouting. A passenger who still needs to travel can request an alternative at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions; this is not limited automatically to the next Ethiopian seat if a reasonable alternative is available substantially sooner.

Fixed compensation is separate. Notice at least 14 days before departure normally removes the fixed cancellation amount, while shorter notice is tested against the replacement schedule. Extraordinary circumstances may defeat compensation but do not erase the refund-or-rerouting choice.

Document every offered itinerary. If Ethiopian proposes arrival two days later and another suitable carrier can transport the passenger sooner, ask in writing for the earlier option before self-purchasing. If urgent circumstances require a reasonable replacement purchase after refusal or silence, preserve searches, prices and correspondence.

Care at Heathrow and during rerouting

For long journeys, care starts after a waiting period linked to distance. Reasonable meals and refreshments, communication, accommodation and hotel transport may be due. The obligation continues even if extreme weather or an air-traffic restriction caused the disruption.

Accept practical vouchers when they meet immediate needs, but a small food voucher does not settle a fixed-compensation claim. If no care is offered, retain itemised receipts and avoid luxury expenditure. A hotel invoice should identify the guest, date and property; a card statement alone rarely proves what was purchased.

Reasons Ethiopian may rely on

The airline can avoid the fixed amount by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. Heathrow closure, severe weather or an external air-traffic-control decision can qualify. A general reference to “operational requirements” is not evidence.

Routine technical faults are usually inherent in airline activity. Crew rostering, aircraft rotation and ordinary maintenance problems likewise need careful scrutiny. Ask Ethiopian to identify the actual event, where it occurred, how it affected this departure and what rerouting or spare capacity was considered. The rejected-claim guide turns each common refusal into a document request.

Confirm who operated the affected flight

An ET number can be placed on a partner-operated service. UK261 directs the statutory claim to the operating carrier. Save the original e-ticket and boarding pass before rebooking changes the display. If the disrupted sector was operated by another airline, direct the claim accordingly even if Ethiopian sold the booking.

For a multi-carrier itinerary, identify the sector that caused final arrival delay and every operator. The legal allocation can be more complex than sending one claim to the ticket issuer. Read the operating-carrier guide.

A usable Heathrow claim file

Keep the PNR, e-ticket number, original route, planned connection, boarding passes and any check-in evidence. Ethiopian publishes specific Heathrow check-in closure information; timely presentation matters especially in a denied-boarding dispute. Add cancellation messages, replacement offers and final arrival proof.

In the written demand, state: UK departure; operating carrier; scheduled and actual final arrival; event; reason provided; amount per passenger; and a separate expense table. Use Ethiopian's after-travel Support and Feedback form and save the acknowledgement. The claim procedure explains the escalation path if no satisfactory answer follows.

FAQ

Is Heathrow-Addis Ababa covered because Ethiopian is a UK airline?

It is covered because the flight leaves the UK, not because of the airline's nationality. Ethiopian Airlines is not a UK carrier.

Can Addis Ababa-Heathrow earn GBP 520?

Normally not under UK261 when Ethiopian operates that African-origin journey. Other contractual or international rights may still apply.

What if I miss an onward flight at Addis Ababa?

On one booking, measure delay at the last ticketed destination. On separate tickets, analyse each contract and any proven consequential loss separately.

Does a four-hour delay always mean GBP 520?

For a long-haul delay claim, the current CAA table uses GBP 260 for three to four hours and GBP 520 when arrival is more than four hours late, subject to cause and coverage.

Must Ethiopian provide a hotel during extraordinary weather?

Yes, on a covered journey when an overnight wait makes accommodation reasonably necessary; extraordinary circumstances concern fixed compensation, not care.
