Ethiopian Airlines missed connection at Addis Ababa
After a missed Ethiopian Airlines connection at Addis Ababa, first determine whether every sector formed one booking and where that journey began. A continuous EU-origin itinerary can qualify for EU261 compensation when final arrival is at least three hours late; a UK-origin itinerary can qualify under UK261. A journey beginning in Africa normally receives neither fixed scheme when Ethiopian operates it, and a separately bought onward ticket is not automatically protected rerouting.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Ask for rebooking to the last ticketed destination immediately, then check fixed-compensation eligibility once the final delay is known.
At the airport: preserve the original journey
Before accepting a reissue, photograph or download the original e-ticket, boarding passes and connection. Save the disruption message and ask the transfer desk to state the reason. Record the time assistance was requested and every replacement offered.
Do not surrender the only paper boarding pass without taking a clear image. A reissued application itinerary may remove the missed sector. Keep baggage tags, because through-checking can support the continuous-ticket record and helps trace luggage after a reroute.
If Ethiopian sends the passenger to a transit desk, ask for the complete new route and final arrival, not only a seat to an intermediate city.
One ticket or self-connection?
| Evidence | One continuous booking | Separate bookings |
|---|---|---|
| Single e-ticket with consecutive coupons | Strong indication | Usually absent |
| One PNR and overall price | Supports continuity | May show separate contracts |
| Baggage checked to final destination | Supporting evidence | Often checked only to ADD |
| Protected rerouting to last city | Usually expected | Not automatic for second ticket |
| Final delay under EU261/UK261 | Measured at last destination | Usually each ticket separately |
An agent can sometimes combine carriers into one directly connecting ticket even when confirmations arrive separately. Conversely, an itinerary organiser can display two independent purchases on one page. Use ticket numbers and contractual issuance, not visual layout alone.
The Europe-Africa connection guide provides the legal final-destination test.
Direction determines fixed compensation
On one Paris-Addis Ababa-Nairobi booking, the EU departure can protect the journey to Nairobi. On one London-Addis Ababa-Nairobi booking, UK261 can protect it. On Nairobi-Addis Ababa-London, Ethiopian's non-UK status means the African-origin journey normally falls outside UK261.
Do not let the location of the missed connection dominate the analysis. Addis Ababa can appear in both a strong and weak claim. The protected origin and final destination distinguish them.
For a return trip, assess outward and inbound disruptions separately. The Africa-to-Europe scope guide explains why one PNR does not make the return European.
Calculate final arrival after rebooking
Fixed delay compensation normally requires at least three hours at the last ticketed destination. Calculate scheduled versus actual arrival in one time zone and use the time an aircraft door opened. If a replacement ends at a different airport, include the transport Ethiopian owes to the contracted airport or agreed nearby destination.
A missed connection can produce no fixed payment if Ethiopian rebooks the passenger and final arrival is only two hours late. It can produce a long-haul maximum after an overnight arrival. Wait for the completed journey before finalising the exact delay amount, while preserving evidence in real time.
For EU long-haul travel, the usual maximum is EUR 600, potentially reduced to EUR 300 in the relevant timing window. For UK long-haul travel, the current delay table uses GBP 260 from three to four hours and GBP 520 after more than four hours. See the amount guide.
Rerouting at the earliest opportunity
After a protected cancellation or connection failure, request a reasonable route to the final destination. Ethiopian may use its own network or a partner. The legal objective is not necessarily the airline's next convenient service if a suitable alternative can arrive materially sooner.
Ask in writing for the option and preserve the response. Before self-purchasing, document available routes and why Ethiopian's proposal was inadequate. If urgency makes purchase unavoidable, choose a reasonable cabin and price. Reimbursement depends on necessity, proportionality and the airline's prior opportunity to assist.
If the ticket was separate, ask both airlines for commercial help but do not describe the onward purchase as automatically covered. Montreal delay damages may be relevant to a proven loss caused by the first carrier, subject to defences and mitigation.
Meals, hotel and transit practicalities
On a covered continuous journey, care can include meals, communication, overnight accommodation and transport. Ask Ethiopian to arrange it. Transit and entry requirements may determine whether accommodation is airside or outside the airport; record any inability to use an offered hotel.
If no suitable care is provided, buy reasonable essentials and retain itemised receipts. A luxury property or discretionary city transport may be challenged. A voucher does not waive fixed compensation unless it forms part of a clear, valid settlement.
Families, unaccompanied children and passengers needing assistance should identify those needs promptly. Keep evidence if a proposed reroute separates a child from the accompanying adult or fails to accommodate documented mobility needs.
The reason for the missed connection matters
Severe weather, airport closure or external air-traffic control can remove fixed compensation if Ethiopian proves causation and reasonable measures. Ordinary aircraft defects, crew scheduling and routine rotation problems generally remain within airline activity under EU and UK law.
Ask what delayed the inbound aircraft, how much delay that event caused, and what recovery options were considered. A vague explanation at the desk should be recorded but does not settle the legal question.
The rejected-claim guide turns common explanations into targeted evidence requests.
Baggage after a missed connection
Confirm whether the bag was retagged to the new final flight. Photograph the new tag. If luggage fails to arrive, obtain a PIR before leaving the destination baggage area and keep receipts for reasonable replacement essentials.
Baggage claims use the Montreal Convention, not EU261 fixed amounts. A passenger can potentially have both a final-delay claim and a baggage-delay claim, but should submit them as separate records. Use the Ethiopian baggage guide.
A complete post-travel claim
Submit the original and replacement itineraries, operator, first departure, final destination, scheduled and actual arrival, stated reason and expense receipts through Ethiopian's after-travel form. List each passenger and amount.
If the journey began in Africa and is outside EU261 or UK261, request contractual rerouting or refund and proven Montreal loss without demanding an inapplicable fixed amount. Accuracy on scope makes the remaining request stronger.
FAQ
Does every missed connection earn EUR 600?
No. It requires EU261 coverage, one continuous journey, qualifying final delay, the long-distance band and no successful extraordinary defence.
What if my onward flight was on a separate ticket?
The second ticket is normally a separate contract. Ask for help and document loss, but statutory rerouting and final-destination treatment are not automatic.
Is arrival delay measured at Addis Ababa?
Not when Addis Ababa is only a connection on one protected booking. Measure at the last ticketed destination.
Must Ethiopian arrange a hotel overnight?
On a covered journey, reasonable accommodation and transport may be due. Transit restrictions can affect how the hotel is provided.
Can I claim for delayed baggage too?
Yes, if supported, but baggage follows Montreal rules and its own deadlines. Keep it separate from the flight-delay amount.
