Ethiopian Airlines codeshare compensation and the operating carrier
An ET flight number does not by itself make Ethiopian Airlines responsible for EU261 or UK261 compensation. The fixed claim normally belongs with the carrier shown after “operated by”, because that airline performed or intended to perform the disrupted flight. The distinction can also decide territorial coverage: an EU carrier operating an Africa-to-EU flight may bring it within EU261, while an Ethiopian-operated return normally remains outside the Regulation.

Marketing and operation are different jobs
A codeshare lets one airline sell a flight under its own code while another supplies aircraft, crew and operational control. The marketing carrier handles parts of the commercial relationship; the operating carrier performs the flight.
| Booking display | Likely EU261 or UK261 addressee |
|---|---|
| ET code, operated by Ethiopian Airlines | Ethiopian Airlines |
| ET code, operated by an EU partner | EU partner |
| Partner code, operated by Ethiopian Airlines | Ethiopian Airlines |
| Award issued by ShebaMiles, operated by partner | Operating partner for fixed compensation |
| Ticket sold by an online agent, operated by Ethiopian | Ethiopian for operating-carrier duties |
The ticket issuer may still process fare reimbursement or reissue. That does not move fixed operating duties to the issuer.
Find the operator in three records
Start with the e-ticket receipt, which should show an “operated by” line for codeshare sectors. Compare the original booking confirmation and boarding pass. Save all three because abbreviations, reissues and application screens can differ.
Aircraft livery is supporting evidence, not the legal test. Wet-leased aircraft can carry another brand while operational allocation follows the contract and actual carrier role. Ask for the operating-carrier designator if the documents conflict.
Ethiopian's Conditions of Carriage say customers will be informed when a codeshare partner operates a service and warn that the operating airline may apply different delay, denied-boarding and baggage rules. The same conditions direct complaints or damage claims to the operating carrier where it differs from the marketer.
Operator status changes inbound coverage
An Ethiopian-operated Frankfurt-Addis Ababa departure is covered because it leaves the EU. The reverse Addis Ababa-Frankfurt flight is normally outside EU261 because Ethiopian is not a Community carrier.
Now change only the operator. If the Africa-to-EU flight carries an ET marketing code but an EU-licensed airline actually operates it, Article 3(1)(b) may cover the arrival. If a European airline's code appears on an Ethiopian-operated aircraft, the marketer's licence does not transform Ethiopian into an EU operator.
| African-origin flight | Operator | Normal EU261 result |
|---|---|---|
| ADD-Frankfurt with ET code | Ethiopian | Outside EU261 |
| ADD-Frankfurt with ET code | EU airline | May be covered |
| ADD-Frankfurt with partner code | Ethiopian | Outside EU261 |
The Africa-to-Europe coverage guide explains the other facts that do not change this result.
EU and UK departures remain protected on any carrier
For a departure from the EU/EEA or UK, operator nationality does not determine territorial entry. It still determines the respondent. A London departure operated by Ethiopian can be UK261-covered; a Paris departure operated by Ethiopian can be EU261-covered.
Do not send parallel full demands to every logo on the ticket without explaining their roles. Identify the operator and use one focused statutory claim. Send fare-refund correspondence to the issuing channel if its participation is genuinely required.
Mixed-carrier connections need the whole ticket
A passenger may travel Lufthansa-then-Ethiopian or Ethiopian-then-an African partner on one booking. Final arrival delay is measured at the last ticketed destination when the continuous European-origin journey is protected, but responsibility can require the connecting-flight case law.
Keep each operator, flight, scheduled time and actual time in one chronology. Identify which event caused the missed connection. Do not assume that the airline operating the final late sector caused the initial disruption; do not assume the first operator can ignore final delay either.
Example: one ticket runs Brussels-Frankfurt-Addis Ababa-Nairobi. A partner operates the European feeder and Ethiopian operates the long sectors. If the feeder cancellation causes the final delay, preserve all sectors and direct the initial claim using the actual operating and contractual structure. The Europe-Africa connection guide explains the final-destination evidence.
Star Alliance does not create a common liability fund
Ethiopian and many partners participate in Star Alliance. Alliance membership supports through travel, loyalty and possible rebooking, but Star Alliance itself does not operate the flight and does not pay EU261 or UK261 compensation.
An airline should not reject reasonable rerouting solely because another suitable carrier sits outside an internal preferred option, but the exact duty comes from passenger law, not the alliance badge. Ask the responsible operating airline for rerouting at the earliest opportunity and keep any refusal.
Award tickets divide responsibilities
ShebaMiles can issue Ethiopian and Star Alliance awards. The operating carrier receives the fixed passenger-rights claim. ShebaMiles or the ticket issuer may need to restore miles and taxes after cancellation. These requests can proceed together without being the same remedy.
If a cabin upgrade was issued through a programme but not provided, preserve the original and flown classes. A downgrade repayment and programme-mile restoration require separate calculations. See the ShebaMiles award guide.
Baggage operator rules are not identical to EU261
Baggage liability is governed principally by the Montreal Convention and carrier conditions, not the fixed flight-disruption scheme. On successive carriage, the Convention can provide claims against specified participating carriers depending on the loss and journey. Report immediately to the carrier handling the arrival and retain the PIR.
Do not use the codeshare analysis to delay baggage notice while airlines discuss responsibility. The Ethiopian baggage guide covers the seven- and 21-day written deadlines.
A precise operating-carrier demand
Attach the ticket page showing the operator and write: “Flight ET___ was marketed by Ethiopian Airlines and operated by ___. This continuous booking departed ___ and arrived at the final destination ___ late.” Then state the event, governing rule and amount.
If Ethiopian rejects because it did not operate the flight, ask it to confirm the legal name and contact of the operator and preserve that answer. If Ethiopian did operate, respond with the original proof rather than a screenshot of an aircraft photograph.
The Ethiopian claim procedure organises the rest of the evidence.
FAQ
Does an ET flight number prove Ethiopian operated the flight?
No. It can be a marketing code. Check the e-ticket and boarding pass for “operated by”.
Can an EU partner make Addis Ababa-Europe covered?
Potentially yes when that EU carrier actually operates the inbound flight and the other Article 3 conditions are met.
Does Star Alliance pay compensation?
No. The alliance does not operate the service; address statutory claims to the responsible operating carrier.
Who refunds a codeshare ticket after cancellation?
The issuing airline or agent may process fare reimbursement, while fixed compensation normally remains an operating-carrier duty.
What if the operator changed after rebooking?
Keep both itineraries. Assess the original disruption and the replacement separately, identifying who operated each affected sector.
