easyJet denied boarding: compensation for overbooking and seat shortages
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. If easyJet refuses to carry you against your will despite a confirmed booking, timely check-in and valid travel documents, EC261 or UK261 can require fixed compensation immediately. You should also receive a choice between refund and replacement transport, plus meals, hotel and transfers when needed. Unlike a delay claim, involuntary denied boarding does not depend on reaching the destination three hours late.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
easyJet openly explains that it may sell more seats than the aircraft contains based on expected no-shows. It may also need to reduce passenger numbers because a smaller aircraft is used or operational weight restrictions apply. The legal outcome depends on whether you volunteered and whether easyJet had a reasonable ground to refuse carriage.
Volunteer or involuntary refusal?
| Situation | Main consequence |
|---|---|
| You accept an offer to give up the seat | Benefits are negotiated; obtain the agreement in writing |
| easyJet selects you after too few volunteers | Statutory denied-boarding rights normally apply |
| You arrive after the stated check-in or gate deadline | The airline may have a reasonable refusal ground |
| Passport, visa, health or safety requirement is not met | Fixed denied-boarding compensation may not be available |
| Aircraft is changed and fewer seats remain | This can still be involuntary denied boarding if you complied with travel conditions |
Do not sign a volunteer form simply because staff say nobody will travel unless passengers cooperate. Ask what benefit is offered, when the replacement flight leaves, which costs easyJet will cover and whether the payment is cash, transfer or voucher. A volunteer's negotiated deal is not automatically equal to the statutory amount available after involuntary refusal.
Conditions the passenger should prove
Keep the confirmed booking and evidence that you presented yourself as required. Online check-in, a mobile boarding pass, a baggage-drop receipt and a timestamped gate photograph can establish the sequence. If the app removes the boarding pass after refusal, take screenshots before closing it.
Carry the travel documents required for the destination and transit. Compensation is not intended to override immigration, security, health or safety rules. If staff cite a document problem, ask for the precise requirement and written refusal reason. A generic “not cleared to travel” note makes later review difficult.
Passengers with reduced mobility and accompanying persons should also preserve assistance requests. If operational constraints require selecting passengers, the regulation sets priorities that easyJet must respect, including the needs of persons with reduced mobility and accompanying persons.
Fixed amounts after involuntary denied boarding
EC261 ordinarily pays EUR 250 for routes up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for intra-EU routes above 1,500 km and other covered routes between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for other routes above 3,500 km. UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520.
Where the replacement transport delivers you within two, three or four hours of the original arrival time, depending on route band, easyJet may reduce the fixed amount by 50%. That reduction requires the relevant timing condition; it is not available merely because you eventually travelled.
The operating regime follows route and carrier. A denied boarding event at Gatwick usually points to UK261. At Paris, Amsterdam or another EU departure airport, EC261 applies. A Swiss departure falls under Switzerland's adopted Regulation 261 framework. Confirm whether the flight was operated by easyJet UK (EZY), easyJet Europe (EJU) or easyJet Switzerland (EZS) where inbound coverage or jurisdiction matters.
Use the easyJet compensation calculator for the correct band. Every eligible passenger has an individual right, so a family of four should not receive one amount for the booking as a whole.
Refund or replacement travel
After involuntary denied boarding, easyJet must offer the same fundamental transport choice used for cancellation: reimbursement of the unused journey, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting later at your convenience under the applicable conditions. Do not accept a refund impulsively when reaching the destination remains essential, because it ends the carrier's duty to transport you on that journey.
The earliest reasonable option may be another easyJet service, a flight by another airline or suitable surface transport. Ask staff to record the alternatives considered. If you self-book after easyJet fails to provide a timely route, preserve screenshots, contact attempts and the price comparison before purchase.
If the substitute arrives at a nearby airport, agree how you will reach the booked airport or destination. The cost of reasonable transfer should not simply be shifted to the passenger. The alternative-flight guide covers evidence for those expenses.
Care at the airport
While you wait for rerouting, easyJet should provide food and drink proportionate to the delay, communication, and accommodation with transport when departure moves to the next day. These rights are additional to the fixed payment.
Ask ground staff for vouchers or direct arrangements first. If none are available, buy modest necessities and retain itemised receipts. easyJet's published expense policy refers to reasonable food and non-alcoholic drinks, three-star or equivalent accommodation where available, and standard or shared transport. A premium room chosen without necessity may be disputed even when some hotel cost was plainly due.
What to obtain at the gate
Request a written statement that boarding was refused involuntarily and ask whether the reason was overbooking, aircraft substitution, weight restriction or something else. The document should not describe you as a volunteer if you did not agree to surrender the seat.
Record the names or roles of staff, the time you presented at the gate, the boarding status of companions and the replacement offered. Keep any volunteer announcement and photographs of gate information. If easyJet pays compensation at the airport, obtain a receipt saying exactly which right it settles.
Do not let a voucher labelled “goodwill” obscure statutory payment. Under Regulation 261, compensation in vouchers requires signed passenger agreement; the ordinary methods include cash, electronic bank transfer, bank order or cheque. UK rules similarly should not be displaced by an unwanted credit.
Submit and escalate the claim
Use easyJet's official EC261 compensation portal and select denied boarding. Enter the original flight, not only the replacement. Attach the booking confirmation, boarding pass, written refusal, rerouting record and passenger-by-passenger details. Claim care expenses separately with receipts.
If easyJet says you volunteered, answer with the absence of informed agreement and the gate evidence. If it alleges late arrival, provide check-in, bag-drop and gate timestamps. If it cites travel documents, request the precise legal basis and compare it with the documents presented.
For unresolved eligible complaints involving a UK flight, easyJet currently identifies AviationADR, with referral generally required within 12 months of its final response under the terms. Other events should be directed to the relevant national enforcement body or court without assuming that an ADR decision in one country controls another.
The adopted EU reform is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026. Current denied-boarding rights remain the basis of this guide, and the future nine-month request period should not be treated as an active deadline.
FAQ
Does easyJet overbook flights?
easyJet says that it sometimes sells more seats based on historical no-show data. It first seeks volunteers, but an involuntarily selected passenger can have statutory compensation, transport and care rights.
Should I volunteer if easyJet offers a voucher?
Only after comparing the written value, restrictions, replacement timing and expenses with your plans. Volunteering changes the legal position, and the negotiated benefit may be less useful than involuntary denied-boarding rights.
Can easyJet deny boarding because the aircraft is smaller?
It may need to reduce passengers after an aircraft change, but a compliant passenger selected against their will can still fall within denied boarding. The cause does not automatically remove the statutory package of rights.
Is three hours of delay required after denied boarding?
No. Involuntary denied boarding is its own compensation event. Replacement arrival time can affect a possible 50% reduction, but the initial entitlement is not built on a three-hour threshold.
What if easyJet says I reached the gate too late?
Produce timestamped check-in, bag-drop, security and gate evidence. The published deadline and actual presentation time are decisive facts; ask easyJet for the scan or gate record supporting its position.
