easyJet Gatwick disruption: compensation, care and another airport
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. An easyJet flight departing London Gatwick is assessed under UK261. A qualifying arrival delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can produce GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger, depending on distance and circumstances. Preserve the live Gatwick record, compare actual rerouting arrival and document any transfer to or from another London airport.

Gatwick claim map
| Event | Immediate priority | Possible money claim |
|---|---|---|
| Departure delay | Record times and request care | Fixed amount if final arrival qualifies |
| Cancellation | Choose refund or workable rerouting | Fixed amount if notice and cause tests are met |
| Gatwick replaced by another airport | Obtain ground-transfer plan | Reasonable transfer cost and arrival-based claim |
| Overnight replacement | Ask easyJet for room and transport | Necessary self-funded costs if assistance fails |
| Involuntary denied boarding | Get written refusal and do not sign as volunteer | Fixed UK261 payment plus refund/rerouting and care |
Gatwick is a major easyJet base, but base size does not determine liability. Check who operated the individual flight, the route and the precise disruption. A code or booking sold by easyJet can involve another operator, and the operating carrier receives the UK261 demand.
Measure arrival, not the queue at the gate
For delay compensation, the usual test is lateness at final destination when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave. Touchdown, reaching the stand and entering baggage reclaim are different events.
Take screenshots of easyJet Flight Tracker and Gatwick's status page, but do not rely on one estimated time. Keep app messages, photographs of the display and any timestamped door-opening evidence. The airline has operational records, so a clear passenger chronology allows a focused request.
Current UK fixed amounts are GBP 220 for flights up to 1,500 km, GBP 350 for other flights up to 3,500 km and GBP 520 for longer journeys. On the longest band, arrival between three and four hours late can reduce payment to GBP 260. The easyJet calculator guide explains distance and reduction rules.
Cancellation at Gatwick
The date easyJet told the passenger matters. Notice at least 14 days before departure normally removes fixed cancellation compensation. Shorter notice requires comparison of the replacement departure and arrival windows, as well as the operating cause.
The passenger still chooses the Article 8 remedy. If travel remains necessary, request earliest reasonable rerouting. A low original fare does not limit the value of that transport obligation. If the trip has lost its purpose, request money reimbursement rather than an unwanted voucher.
easyJet currently describes options that can include other easyJet services, nearby airports, indirect journeys and, in eligible cases, another airline on the same route. Save what the disruption flow actually offered on your date. Do not cancel the booking yourself before the airline confirms the affected flight's status.
Gatwick is not interchangeable with Luton
London airports are separated by substantial ground journeys. If easyJet substitutes Luton, Stansted, Southend or another airport, ask who will arrange the transfer. A journey is not necessarily complete merely because the aircraft landed somewhere advertised as London.
Record:
- booked and actual airports;
- landing and door-opening times;
- easyJet's coach, rail or taxi offer;
- departure and arrival of ground transport;
- any agreement to finish at a different point;
- itemised transfer cost if no transport was provided.
Final delay can be measured by arrival at the booked airport or another agreed nearby destination where the carrier should have transferred passengers. The easyJet diverted-flight guide covers that calculation.
If rerouting begins from another airport, require clear instructions and reasonable transport. Compare the complete itinerary, including baggage collection and check-in deadlines. A nominally earlier flight can be unusable when the cross-London transfer is impossible.
Meals, room and local transport
Care begins at delay thresholds that vary with route distance, not only when fixed compensation reaches three hours. Cancellation and denied boarding create their own assistance duties. Ask easyJet to issue meals or accommodation through its app, airport staff or support route.
When no adequate service is available, buy necessities in proportion to the wait. easyJet currently refers to reasonable food and non-alcoholic drinks, three-star or equivalent accommodation where available, and standard or shared transport between Gatwick and the hotel.
Retain itemised receipts, proof that you requested help and a note of why the chosen option was necessary. A hotel invoice without passenger names or date creates avoidable doubt. See the easyJet expense guide before submission.
Cause and extraordinary circumstances
Gatwick weather, air-traffic restrictions, security events and airport-system failures can be external to easyJet. An ordinary technical defect, crew planning problem or rotation issue is not extraordinary merely because it affected many flights.
Ask for the specific cause of your flight and the reasonable measures taken. “Operational reasons” does not establish a defence. A previous sector can matter, but easyJet should show the direct link and how it attempted to avoid the disruption.
Even where fixed compensation is excluded, cancellation refund or rerouting and waiting-time care remain. Keep those parts of the claim separate.
Escalating a refused Gatwick claim
Submit easyJet's official form with flight, passenger, route, amount and evidence. If the response is vague, answer the stated reason rather than sending the same narrative again.
easyJet currently participates in AviationADR for eligible unresolved disputes. Check its acceptance requirements and time limit, including the period from easyJet's final response. A regulator complaint and an individual money remedy are not identical.
FAQ
Is an easyJet flight from Gatwick covered by EU261?
The primary departure regime is UK261 because Gatwick is in the UK. An EU destination does not turn the outbound flight into an EC261 departure.
Does landing at Luton end my Gatwick journey?
Not automatically. easyJet may need to arrange transfer to Gatwick or another agreed nearby destination, and final lateness can include that ground journey.
What if easyJet offers a refund but I still need to travel?
Ask for earliest reasonable rerouting before selecting reimbursement. Choosing a refund usually ends the airline's obligation to carry and care for you.
Can weather remove every right?
No. Genuine extraordinary weather can defeat fixed compensation, but cancellation rerouting or refund and reasonable care remain available.
Where can I take an unresolved easyJet claim?
After using easyJet's process and receiving a final response, an eligible UK passenger can check AviationADR. Court action remains subject to jurisdiction and time limits.
