easyJet EUR 600 compensation: the long-distance rule explained

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. EUR 600 is possible only for a qualifying EC261 journey above 3,500 km that is outside the intra-EU distance category. It is uncommon across easyJet's predominantly short-haul network. A long easyJet flight leaving the United Kingdom is normally assessed under UK261, where the top standard amount is GBP 520 rather than EUR 600.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Before claiming the headline figure, confirm the departure country, operating airline, airport-to-airport distance, arrival or cancellation timing and cause. An unsupported demand for EUR 600 can delay an otherwise valid EUR 250 or EUR 400 case.

When the EC261 bands reach EUR 600

Covered route categoryStandard amount
Up to 1,500 kmEUR 250
Intra-EU above 1,500 kmEUR 400
Other route from 1,500 to 3,500 kmEUR 400
Other route above 3,500 kmEUR 600

All four elements of the final row matter. The journey must be covered by EC261, exceed 3,500 km by great-circle distance, fall outside the intra-EU category and satisfy a compensable disruption test.

An EU departure is covered regardless of the operator's nationality. An inbound flight from a third country generally requires an EU or otherwise qualifying Community operating carrier. easyJet Europe is based in Austria; easyJet Switzerland has a special position under EU-Swiss aviation arrangements; easyJet UK is a UK airline. Confirm the EJU, EZS or EZY operator rather than treating the brand as one legal entity.

Why most easyJet claims are not EUR 600

Many easyJet routes are below 1,500 km and fall in the EUR 250 or GBP 220 band. Longer Mediterranean and island journeys frequently sit between 1,500 and 3,500 km, producing EUR 400 or GBP 350. An intra-EU route stays at EUR 400 even above 1,500 km.

Flights from the UK use UK261 as the primary departure regime. easyJet has announced services from Gatwick and other UK airports to destinations beyond 3,500 km, but a qualifying disruption on that outbound journey points to GBP 520. It does not become EUR 600 because the destination is geographically associated with Europe or because the ticket was priced in euros.

Schedules change, and a route advertised for one season may not operate on another date. Use the airports and operator on the actual booking rather than a current network map when claiming for a past flight.

Delay threshold and the 50% reduction

For a delay claim, legal arrival must be at least three hours late. Arrival generally occurs when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers may leave, not at runway touchdown.

On the longest EC261 category, an arrival between three and four hours late can allow the EUR 600 amount to be reduced by 50%, producing EUR 300. Once delay exceeds four hours, the full EUR 600 is normally the starting figure, subject to cause and other eligibility. The reduction must be tied to the legal rule; easyJet cannot halve every award simply because a substitute flight was provided.

Example: a covered non-EU destination lies 3,720 km from the EU departure airport. The flight opens its door three hours 35 minutes late for an ordinary operational reason. The provisional fixed amount is EUR 300. At four hours 12 minutes, the starting figure becomes EUR 600.

Use the easyJet compensation calculator with actual airport codes and door time.

Cancellation and rerouting

A cancellation notified at least 14 days before departure normally does not generate fixed compensation. With notice between seven and 14 days, or below seven days, the timing of the replacement can remove or preserve the claim. A qualifying EUR 600 amount can also be halved when rerouting keeps arrival within the relevant four-hour window.

Refund or rerouting is due because of cancellation independently of the fixed sum. If easyJet proves severe external weather, a closure or an ATC measure, EUR 600 may be unavailable while the passenger retains the choice of unused-ticket reimbursement or replacement travel and reasonable care.

Do not accept a voucher before comparing it with the statutory cash-refund option. If reaching the destination still matters, ask for rerouting at the earliest opportunity, including a reasonable alternative airline where necessary. The easyJet cancelled-flight guide explains the notice and substitute-flight windows.

Denied boarding on a long route

Involuntary denied boarding can create the long-distance amount without a three-hour arrival requirement. The passenger should have a confirmed booking, present on time and hold valid travel documents. easyJet should first seek volunteers; a passenger selected against their will receives the statutory package.

Replacement arrival within four hours can support a 50% reduction. Keep the gate refusal, volunteer announcements, original boarding pass and replacement arrival. A benefit negotiated by a volunteer is contractual and should not be confused with the fixed EUR 600 calculation.

Cause and proof

Distance does not override extraordinary circumstances. easyJet can avoid fixed delay or cancellation compensation by proving a qualifying external event, direct causation and reasonable measures. Severe unsafe weather, airport closure, a specific controller restriction and security incidents can meet the test.

Routine component failures normally remain part of airline operations. A hidden manufacturing defect announced externally can be different. Likewise, a strike by easyJet's own staff requires analysis distinct from an external ATC stoppage.

Ask for the event's time, location and operational effect. Long routes may involve airspace closures far from the airports, but easyJet should still connect the restriction to the planned path and explain reasonable alternatives. An unexplained “operational reasons” response does not prove the defence.

One amount per passenger

The award is individual. Two eligible adults and two fare-paying children can produce four amounts. If the full EUR 600 band applies, the booking total would be EUR 2,400. Do not subtract the ticket refund, meal voucher or travel-insurance payment unless it compensates the same legal loss and creates a genuine double-recovery issue.

Infants travelling free without an individual fare need separate review. Passengers travelling on public reward or promotional fares are generally not excluded merely because the cash price was low.

How to frame the request

State the EU departure or inbound qualifying operator, great-circle distance, disruption type, controlling time and reason communicated. Show the arithmetic and request the amount for each named passenger. Attach the itinerary, boarding proof, operator notation and messages.

Submit through the official easyJet EC261 portal. Keep expenses in a separate claim. If easyJet pays EUR 300, verify whether a three-to-four-hour long-delay reduction actually applies. If it pays EUR 400, recheck whether the route was intra-EU or below 3,500 km before challenging.

The EU reform adopted in July 2026 keeps the EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 bands. It is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026; its future nine-month submission period and 30-day response period do not govern today's claim.

FAQ

Does easyJet pay EUR 600 for every flight over 3,500 km?

No. The journey must fall under EC261 and be outside the intra-EU category. UK departures use UK261, where the corresponding top standard amount is GBP 520.

Can easyJet reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300?

Yes, in defined long-distance timing circumstances, including an eligible delay between three and four hours. Ask easyJet to identify the exact reduction rule and verify door-opening arrival.

Does a cheap easyJet fare reduce the EUR 600 amount?

No. Fixed compensation is not proportional to ticket price. A qualifying passenger can receive more than the fare paid.

Can a family receive EUR 600 for each traveller?

Yes, when every ticketed passenger meets the conditions. Calculate eligibility person by person and include all names in the official form.

Is EUR 600 still available after the 2026 EU reform?

The adopted amendment retains the existing distance amounts, including EUR 600. The new law has not yet reached its application date, so current EC261 remains controlling on this review date.
