Delta Paris CDG delay or cancellation compensation

A Delta-operated flight departing Paris Charles de Gaulle can qualify for EUR 600 when it reaches the booked final destination at least three hours late or is cancelled at short notice for a reason within Delta's responsibility. A direct Delta-operated flight from the United States to Paris normally falls outside EU261. If Air France operates the inbound flight, its EU carrier status can bring that direction within the regulation.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Delta currently places its US services at CDG Terminal 2E. Confirm the live terminal, operator and gate on the travel date because partner connections can use other Terminal 2 areas.

Use the Delta EU departures guide for the full coverage rules. Ticket branding does not replace route direction and actual operation.

Why EUR 600 is common but not automatic

Paris-US journeys exceed 3,500 km and normally enter EU261's EUR 600 distance band. The passenger must still establish a protected disruption.

For delay, arrival at the final destination must be at least three hours late. For cancellation, notice timing, alternative-flight timing and cause matter. Delta may reduce a long-distance cancellation award to EUR 300 when rerouting arrives within the permitted four-hour window.

Ticket price and cabin do not change the fixed band. A child with a covered commercial ticket receives the same amount as an adult, while shared expenses are reimbursed at actual cost.

Final destination after a US connection

Paris-CDG-Atlanta-Tampa on one reservation is assessed at Tampa. If the Delta transatlantic service lands two hours late and the missed connection produces a seven-hour final delay, the final arrival can support EU261.

Preserve the single e-ticket and every reroute. At the first US entry point, follow current border and baggage instructions; actual procedures can affect connection recovery but do not erase the booked final destination.

If Tampa was purchased on a separate ticket, EU261 protection for that loss is much weaker. The Delta missed connection guide explains the booking distinction.

Cancellation at CDG

Delta must offer a choice between reimbursement and rerouting for a covered cancellation. If travel remains necessary, ask for the earliest suitable option under comparable conditions. Air France, KLM or Virgin Atlantic may provide alternatives, but availability and final arrival must be confirmed.

Fixed compensation generally remains possible when notice arrived less than fourteen days before travel, unless rerouting falls within the statutory windows or Delta proves extraordinary circumstances.

Save the exact notification timestamp. When an agency booked the ticket, ask both Delta and the agency for transmission records if they disagree about when notice reached the passenger.

Delta and Air France at Terminal 2

Delta's current CDG page states that its US flights operate in Terminal 2E. Air France uses Terminal 2E for relevant non-Schengen services and Terminals 2F or 2G for many Schengen connections.

Terminal co-location does not make Delta and Air France one carrier. Check in with the operator shown on the flight. For a DL-coded Air France flight, the EU261 request goes to Air France; for a Delta-operated service sold with an AF code, it goes to Delta.

Photograph terminal displays and keep the original boarding pass. A replacement operated by Air France does not transfer liability for Delta's original cancellation.

Evidence at Paris-CDG

Build the file while still at the airport:

  • original ticket, PNR and every boarding pass;
  • operator shown for each sector;
  • cancellation or delay message with time;
  • Terminal 2E display and gate updates;
  • scheduled and actual final arrival;
  • Delta's stated disruption reason;
  • proposed partner alternatives;
  • baggage tags for the complete itinerary;
  • meal, hotel and airport-transfer receipts.

If a long queue prevents assistance, record attempts through airport staff, app, chat and phone. A later self-bought reroute needs proof Delta did not provide an adequate one.

Technical, weather and airport causes

A routine aircraft fault is generally part of airline operation and can support compensation. Severe weather, air traffic restrictions, airport closure or an external security event can be extraordinary when Delta proves direct causation and reasonable measures.

“Operational reasons” is not enough to decide the claim. Ask for event type, timing, aircraft and alternatives considered. If an earlier flight caused knock-on delay, Delta should explain the causal chain.

The Delta technical fault guide and weather and ATC guide separate these causes.

Care at CDG

For a long-haul delayed departure, EU261 care begins when Delta expects a wait of at least four hours. Cancellation and denied boarding also bring meals, communication and, when needed, accommodation and airport-hotel transport while rerouting is awaited.

Care remains due during extraordinary circumstances. Ask Delta to arrange assistance. If it fails, choose reasonable options and retain itemised receipts.

Do not submit a missed prepaid New York hotel as though it were airport care in Paris. Destination losses may require insurance, package rights or another legal basis.

US-to-Paris operated by Delta

A direct Delta-operated departure from New York, Atlanta or another US city normally falls outside EU261 because Delta is not an EU carrier. The aircraft landing at CDG does not reverse the direction test.

US DOT refund rules apply when Delta cancels or significantly changes the service and the passenger rejects alternatives without travelling. Delta's policy can provide rebooking and defined controllable-disruption expenses.

If Air France operates the inbound flight, EU261 can apply because it is an EU carrier. Always inspect “operated by.”

Submitting and escalating in France

Send Delta a concise EU261 request stating CDG departure, operator, final destination, arrival delay, cause supplied and amount. Keep compensation, refund/rerouting and expense schedules separate.

If Delta refuses, request evidence of extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. France's enforcement framework includes the DGAC, while individual dispute pathways can involve mediation subject to procedural requirements. Check the current competent route before filing.

The Delta rejected claim guide shows how to challenge a generic refusal without overstating the evidence.

Worked examples

Paris-CDG-New York delayed four hours by component failure: Delta operates from the EU. EUR 600 may be due if the fault is routine and no valid defence is proved.

Paris-CDG-Atlanta-Charleston misses the connection: one ticket reaches Charleston six hours late. Assess final arrival, not the time at Atlanta.

Atlanta-Paris-CDG operated by Delta: EU261 ordinarily does not apply. Seek DOT refund or Delta policy relief as appropriate.

New York-Paris under DL code operated by Air France: Air France's EU status can make the inbound journey covered; submit to Air France.

FAQ

Can a Delta flight from Paris-CDG receive EUR 600?

Yes. A qualifying Delta-operated long-haul EU departure can receive EUR 600 per eligible passenger.

Is Delta from New York to Paris covered by EU261?

Not ordinarily when Delta operates it, because the flight begins outside the EU and Delta is a US carrier.

Who handles a DL-coded flight operated by Air France?

Air France is the operating carrier and normally receives the statutory disruption claim.

Which CDG terminal does Delta currently use?

Delta currently states Terminal 2E for its US services; verify the live terminal and partner connection area on travel day.

Does CDG weather remove meals and a hotel?

No. On a protected journey, reasonable care can remain due even if extraordinary weather defeats fixed compensation.
