Delta cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
After Delta cancels a protected departure from the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom, the passenger must be offered a choice between reimbursement and rerouting; fixed compensation of up to EUR 600 or GBP 520 may also be due depending on notice, replacement timing and cause. A Delta-operated cancellation from the United States to Europe normally has strong refund rights but not automatic EU261 or UK261 compensation.

The first decision after cancellation
| Passenger's objective | Remedy to request |
|---|---|
| End the journey | Refund of unused travel and, where relevant, a return flight |
| Reach the destination soon | Rerouting at the earliest opportunity |
| Travel later | Rerouting at a convenient later date, subject to seats |
| Recover waiting costs | Care or reasonable expense reimbursement |
| Seek money for the disruption | Separate EU261 or UK261 compensation test |
EU261 and UK261 require a genuine choice. Delta should not force an eCredit where cash reimbursement is legally due, and a unilateral refund may be inadequate if the passenger requested timely rerouting.
Direction determines fixed-compensation scope
A Delta-operated cancellation leaving Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin or another covered European airport can enter EU261. A cancellation leaving London can enter UK261. These rules apply even though Delta is a US airline.
Direct Delta-operated cancellations beginning in the United States normally sit outside the European fixed-payment systems. US DOT rules nevertheless require a refund when Delta cancels and the passenger does not accept alternative transportation or another form of compensation.
The actual operator can reverse an inbound answer. A DL-coded New York-Paris flight operated by Air France can be within EU261 because Air France is an EU carrier. A New York-London service operated by Virgin Atlantic can enter UK261. Save the "operated by" line.
The route-regime guide separates these legal paths.
Compensation depends on cancellation notice
Fixed compensation is normally unavailable when Delta informed the passenger at least fourteen days before scheduled departure. With shorter notice, replacement times matter:
- notice between seven and fourteen days can avoid compensation when rerouting departs no more than two hours early and arrives less than four hours late;
- notice under seven days can avoid it when rerouting departs no more than one hour early and arrives less than two hours late;
- outside those windows, the relevant EUR or GBP band can be due unless extraordinary circumstances are proved.
The date Delta internally decided to cancel is not the notice date. Preserve the first email, text or app notification received by the passenger. If an agent received notice, record when it passed the information on.
Refund is not the only lawful option
For a protected cancellation, reimbursement generally covers the ticket parts not used and parts already used when the journey no longer serves its original purpose. A return flight to the first point of departure may also be required for an interrupted connection.
Rerouting at the earliest opportunity can involve a reasonable alternative, not merely the next Delta departure days later. Ask Delta to search its own services and suitable partners. Do not buy an expensive replacement before giving the carrier a practical chance to comply, unless urgency and failed assistance make self-help reasonable.
If Delta refunds without offering the requested rerouting, preserve evidence of comparable replacement options and their prices. The replacement-transport guide addresses the evidential risk of buying travel yourself.
Delta cash refund versus eCredit
Delta's current disruption page can offer a refund to the original payment method or an eCredit stated as valid for five years when the passenger rejects automatic rebooking. A voluntary credit can be useful, but it should be chosen knowingly.
Check value, transferability, expiry and whether acceptance contains settlement language. If a statutory cash refund is due, the passenger need not take a voucher merely because it appears first in the app.
For US-origin cancellations, DOT's automatic-refund framework applies when the passenger does not accept the changed flight, rebooking, credit or other alternative. Once substitute transportation is knowingly accepted and used, a full ticket refund is generally no longer available.
When the fixed amount is EUR 600 or GBP 520
Most Delta transatlantic departures exceed 3,500 km, placing them in the highest current band. EU261 uses EUR 600 and UK261 uses GBP 520 per passenger. Prompt rerouting can permit a 50% reduction under specified arrival windows.
Shorter connecting itineraries can use lower bands, while distance is assessed according to the protected journey and last destination affected by the cancellation. Do not assume the amount equals the price paid. An award ticket can still qualify because public frequent-flyer tickets are not excluded merely for using miles.
Compensation is distinct from reimbursement. A passenger rerouted to the destination may still claim the fixed amount. A passenger who accepts a cash refund may also retain compensation if the notice and cause tests are met.
Extraordinary cause changes money, not core assistance
Delta does not owe the fixed amount if it proves the cancellation resulted from extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided despite reasonable measures. An airport closure, serious security event or restrictive air traffic decision can qualify. Routine technical problems and internal operational choices often do not.
Refund or rerouting remains due regardless of the cause. Care also continues during a protected wait. This means a genuinely weather-driven cancellation can still require meals, a hotel, transport and a new route.
Request the exact event, its time window, its connection with the aircraft and steps Delta took. "Operational disruption" does not establish the defence.
Care while waiting for a replacement
On a protected journey, Delta should provide refreshments in reasonable relation to the wait, communication and, when an overnight stay becomes necessary, accommodation and transport between airport and hotel. The obligation is not limited to US or Canadian residents.
Ask at the airport and in the app before paying. If no adequate help is supplied, choose proportionate options and retain itemised receipts. Document any refusal and the alternatives Delta offered.
Delta's separate US reimbursement policy can be narrower for controllable events. It does not displace mandatory EU or UK care on a covered departure.
Cancellation evidence file
Keep the original itinerary, e-ticket number, confirmation code and fare receipt. Add the first cancellation notice, all replacement offers, the option selected and proof of actual arrival. Capture the operator of the cancelled flight, not only the replacement airline.
For a refund dispute, show that the alternative was rejected and the ticket remained unused. For compensation, record notice timing, replacement departure and arrival, distance and stated cause. For expenses, submit a chronological receipt schedule.
Use Delta's dedicated European request entry for qualifying departures. The Delta form guide explains which attachment belongs with compensation, refund and reimbursement.
Worked cancellation scenarios
Amsterdam-New York cancelled six hours before departure for a crew-planning issue: Delta reroutes the passenger to arrive five hours late. EU261 can support EUR 600, plus care, because notice was short and the reason appears internal.
London-Atlanta cancelled three weeks before travel: fixed UK261 compensation is normally excluded by timely notice. The passenger still needs a suitable alternative or reimbursement.
Atlanta-Paris cancelled on travel day: Delta operation starts in the US, so EU261 fixed compensation normally does not apply. If the traveller declines rebooking, DOT rules can require an automatic refund.
New York-London DL code operated by Virgin Atlantic: assess UK261 against Virgin as operator; Delta may remain relevant to ticket servicing.
FAQ
Can I receive both a Delta refund and compensation?
Yes when their separate conditions are met. Reimbursement addresses the ticket choice, while fixed compensation addresses the disruption.
Must I accept a Delta eCredit after cancellation?
No when the law gives a cash refund. A credit should be a voluntary choice made after checking its restrictions.
Does weather remove my right to rerouting?
No. Extraordinary circumstances can defeat fixed compensation but do not remove the protected choice between reimbursement and rerouting.
Who handles a DL-coded cancellation operated by Air France?
Air France normally answers the statutory operating-carrier claim, while Delta or the ticket issuer may still service the ticket.
Is compensation due when Delta warned me fifteen days ahead?
Normally not under the fourteen-day cancellation rule, although refund or rerouting rights remain.
