Brussels Airlines UK flights: UK261, EU261 or both?
Short answer: Brussels Airlines flights between Belgium and the United Kingdom can engage UK261, EU261 or both. A UK departure is within UK261, while a Brussels departure is within EU261. Because Brussels Airlines is an EU carrier, an inbound UK-to-EU flight can also be within EU261. Overlap does not allow two fixed payments for the same inconvenience; identify the strongest applicable route and use the correct currency.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
UK261 currently retains the three-hour final-arrival threshold and fixed bands of GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520, including GBP 260 for certain long-haul delays between three and four hours.
Keep the original ticket currency out of this classification. A fare paid in euros, pounds or another currency does not decide which passenger-rights system governs the disrupted transport.
Record the statutory basis before submitting the request.
Direction table
| Itinerary actually operated by Brussels Airlines | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels to United Kingdom | Yes | Can also apply on arrival framework |
| United Kingdom to Brussels | Yes because Brussels Airlines is an EU carrier | Yes because departure is UK |
| UK–BRU–Africa on one ticket | EU and UK interaction needs full-journey analysis | UK departure supports UK261 |
| Africa–BRU–UK on one ticket | EU261 can apply to SN-operated inbound journey | UK arrival rules require separate check |
| SN code operated by a third-country partner | Operator and direction must be reassessed | Operator and direction must be reassessed |
Do not decide from booking currency or residence. Route and operating airline govern the starting analysis.
UK compensation amounts
| UK261 distance and delay | Fixed amount per passenger |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | GBP 220 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | GBP 350 |
| Over 3,500 km, arrival 3-4 hours late | GBP 260 |
| Over 3,500 km, arrival over 4 hours late | GBP 520 |
EU261 uses EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600, with EUR 300 possible in the comparable long-haul delay window. A passenger does not add GBP 220 and EUR 250 for one short disrupted sector. State any payment already received when pursuing an overlapping system.
Connected travel through Brussels
For a protected one-ticket journey, final arrival can be beyond BRU. A passenger leaving the UK for an African city through Brussels may have a short first-sector delay that causes an overnight missed connection. Calculate at the African endpoint and identify the carrier that operated the causal flight.
Separate tickets usually break the final-destination protection. The UK CAA expressly warns that self-transfers do not carry statutory transport, care or compensation to the last independently booked destination when the first delay causes a miss.
Preserve the common booking reference, through-ticket record and every boarding pass. The BRU connection guide explains the rerouting record.
Cancellation and five-hour delay
Both systems protect refund or rerouting after cancellation and provide a five-hour departure-delay option to abandon a journey. Fixed cancellation payment depends on notice and replacement timing, plus the extraordinary-circumstances test.
Accepting rerouting does not automatically waive the fixed sum. Accepting a cash refund generally ends the duty to carry the passenger, so choose after comparing the alternative route. A voucher requires agreement and should not be treated as mandatory.
Care in the UK and Belgium
Both frameworks require reasonable food and drink during qualifying delay, and hotel plus transfer when an overnight stay is necessary. These duties continue during weather and ATC disruption.
If Brussels Airlines does not provide assistance, request it, retain the response and make proportionate purchases. Keep itemised receipts in the original currency. Explain exchange conversion only when submitting the total.
At Brussels Airport, refreshment credit may be linked to the boarding-pass QR code. At a UK airport, follow the local handling agent's instructions but retain evidence that Brussels Airlines is the operator.
Causes and evidence
The extraordinary defence is interpreted through similar retained case-law principles, but EU and UK decisions can diverge over time. Ask Brussels Airlines for the exact event, direct effect and reasonable measures under whichever regime is claimed.
An ordinary technical defect or internal crew-planning issue usually does not become extraordinary by description. Severe weather, airport closure, external security action or a binding ATC restriction may qualify. Own-staff industrial action requires careful current analysis rather than an automatic “strike” refusal.
Escalation route
Complain to Brussels Airlines first and save the case confirmation. The airline states that British consumers may use SÖP subject to eligibility. The UK CAA explains rights and approved alternative-dispute arrangements, but the correct body should be verified against Brussels Airlines' current participation and the passenger's status.
Belgian private-consumer mediation may be relevant to a Belgium-centred dispute after prior airline contact. Court jurisdiction and limitation depend on route, contract and defendant; do not assume UK residence guarantees a UK claim for every connected journey.
Brussels Airlines' Conditions of Carriage currently contain a one-year EU261 action clause. UK contractual claims can follow a different limitation period, which makes the legal basis and forum important. Act early rather than relying on the longest possible period.
Claim in one currency with transparent overlap
Set out the itinerary, actual operator, final arrival, distance and event. State why UK261, EU261 or both can apply, then request one fixed recovery using the selected regime. If seeking a distinct refund or care expense, label it separately.
Do not convert currencies using the travel date without explaining the basis. The statutory UK amounts are already fixed in GBP. EU amounts are fixed in EUR. The compensation calculator helps separate those bands.
FAQ
Does UK261 cover a Brussels Airlines flight leaving London?
Yes, a flight departing a UK airport is within the UK route rule, subject to the remaining conditions.
Can EU261 also cover UK-to-Brussels travel?
It can because Brussels Airlines is an EU carrier arriving in the EU. Overlap does not permit double fixed payment.
How much is UK261 compensation?
Current bands are GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520, with GBP 260 for an eligible over-3,500 km delay between three and four hours.
Are separate UK–BRU and BRU–Africa tickets one journey?
Normally no. Without through-booking protection, each contract has its own destination and statutory duties.
Does Brexit remove all rights on Brussels Airlines flights?
No. UK261 and EU261 continue to protect qualifying routes, with direction and operator deciding their reach.
