Missed Brussels Airlines connection at BRU: final-arrival rights
Short answer: when connected flights are on one reservation, a delay that causes a missed connection at Brussels Airport can produce EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 if the passenger reaches the ticketed final destination at least three hours late and no valid extraordinary defence applies. Brussels Airlines must also reroute the passenger and provide reasonable care. Separate tickets normally do not receive the same through-journey protection.

What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The missed flight itself is not the compensation threshold. What matters is the journey contract, the carrier that operated the disruptive sector, the final arrival and the cause.
One ticket or self-connection?
| Booking structure | Typical consequence at BRU |
|---|---|
| One PNR and through ticket | Airline reroutes to the final destination; delay measured there |
| Codeshare sectors on one ticket | Still potentially protected; identify each actual operator |
| Separate bookings | First carrier usually owes only duties for its own ticket |
| Package with separately issued transport | Check organiser obligations in addition to airline rights |
One booking can have several ticket numbers and airlines, so a different logo does not automatically mean separate travel. Look for a common itinerary, through-checked baggage, protected connection and one contract record. Conversely, two flights shown in the same email from an online seller can remain independent purchases.
How final arrival changes the result
Suppose a passenger travels on one reservation from a European airport to Brussels and onward on Brussels Airlines to Africa. The feeder opens its door 70 minutes late, the connection is missed and the passenger reaches the African destination nine hours late. EU261 assesses the loss of time at the final destination. The feeder did not need to be three hours late by itself.
Now suppose the passenger bought the feeder and long-haul service separately. The first ticket ends at BRU. A 70-minute delay may remain below the fixed threshold for that contract, while the lost onward ticket becomes a consequential loss requiring insurance, package or damages analysis.
Minimum connecting time is not an automatic refusal
A confirmed through booking is normally sold as a workable connection. If the passenger presented correctly and followed reasonable transfer instructions, Brussels Airlines cannot simply answer that the connection was short without examining the disruption and final delay.
Record when the inbound door opened, the arrival gate, onward gate, boarding closure and any security or passport queue. Keep screenshots of gate changes and messages from the app. If assistance directed passengers incorrectly or the onward flight still stood at the gate, note those facts without exaggerating what could realistically have been done.
If the passenger caused the miss by shopping, ignoring boarding calls or lacking required documents, rerouting and compensation can be affected. Preserve a factual timeline.
Who owes the fixed amount?
The operating air carrier responsible for the disruption is normally the defendant. An SN code on every segment does not make Brussels Airlines operator of a partner flight. Check “operated by” on each boarding pass.
Connected-flight case law can allocate liability in ways that require careful analysis when several carriers perform one booking. Start with the sector that caused the final arrival loss and obtain its operator. Do not submit identical demands to every Lufthansa Group or Star Alliance company. The codeshare page provides an evidence table.
Rerouting at Brussels Airport
Brussels Airlines says passengers are automatically rebooked where required and can review alternatives through its digital assistant. Check the app, screens and service channels, but compare the proposed final arrival rather than accepting the first option blindly.
Article 8 requires rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. A route through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich or another suitable airport can be reasonable. If a materially earlier seat is available on another carrier, ask Brussels Airlines to consider it and preserve the request.
Self-booking is risky until the carrier has had a realistic chance to provide transport. It becomes more defensible when no timely route is offered, support is unavailable, or a specific reasonable alternative is refused while seats are disappearing.
Care during the connection wait
Meals and refreshments should match the delay. If departure moves to the next day, Brussels Airlines should arrange accommodation and transfer. Care remains due during severe weather, ATC restrictions and other extraordinary causes.
If assistance is not provided, buy reasonable essentials and keep itemised receipts. Record why each cost was necessary. A traveller rerouted to another Belgian airport or a rail station should also preserve ground-transport instructions and tickets.
Checked baggage may be transferred automatically after rebooking. The airline says that following cancellation and onward travel by train or bus it will try to arrange prompt baggage reclaim. Do not leave BRU without asking where the bag will go; save the baggage tag and any tracing reference.
Calculate compensation
On protected connected travel, distance generally runs from first departure to final destination by direct great-circle measurement. The legs are not added. EUR 250 applies up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 covers the middle categories, and EUR 600 applies to other journeys over 3,500 km.
For long-haul arrival between three and four hours late, EUR 600 can be reduced to EUR 300. At four hours or more, the full band is the usual starting figure. The calculation guide helps record the inputs.
Evidence after rerouting
Keep both the original and replacement itineraries, all boarding passes, PNR, baggage tags, app notifications and actual final-arrival evidence. Record the reason given at the transfer desk. A reissued booking can hide the original schedule, so screenshot before accepting changes.
Submit a chronology that identifies the late sector, operator, missed flight, alternatives, final arrival and amount for every passenger. Add care receipts separately. Brussels Airlines' current one-year EU261 clause makes early written action sensible.
FAQ
Does a missed connection at BRU automatically qualify for compensation?
No. The flights must be protected as one journey, final arrival normally must be at least three hours late, and the cause must pass the liability test.
Can a 70-minute feeder delay lead to EUR 600?
Yes, if it causes a protected missed connection and arrival at a long-haul final destination is sufficiently late.
Must Brussels Airlines reroute me on its own aircraft?
Not necessarily. Earliest comparable rerouting can involve suitable partners or other transport when that is reasonably available.
What happens to checked baggage after rebooking?
It may be transferred automatically, but confirm at BRU. Keep the bag tag and obtain a tracing report if the luggage does not follow.
Are separate tickets protected as one journey?
Usually not under EU261. Review any connection guarantee, package contract or insurance for the lost independent flight.
