Brussels Airlines compensation calculator: test your journey
Short answer: a reliable Brussels Airlines estimate needs seven inputs: operating airline, departure, final destination, one-ticket structure, disruption type, final arrival or cancellation notice, and cause. A calculator result is a screening figure rather than proof. Keep the underlying itinerary and timestamps so the amount can be defended.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?

Input 1: identify who operated the flight
Enter Brussels Airlines only when it actually performed, or was contractually committed to perform, the disrupted flight. An SN marketing number can be attached to a Lufthansa, SWISS, United, Air Canada or other partner service. EU261 liability normally follows the operating air carrier.
Look for “operated by” on the confirmation and boarding pass. Preserve the carrier name, two-letter code and ticketed flight details. If different airlines operated connected sectors, record which sector caused the final delay rather than assigning the entire booking to its seller.
Input 2: enter airports, not city labels
Use exact airport codes for the first departure and relevant final destination. City names can hide multiple airports or a diversion. For one protected booking, the final destination can be beyond Brussels; for independent tickets it may be BRU.
Distance uses the direct great-circle line, not the route flown. The EUR 250/400/600 guide explains why connected-leg distances are not added.
Input 3: decide whether connections form one journey
One reservation normally has a common booking reference and tickets issued as a connected itinerary, although codeshares can involve several operators. A protected missed connection is assessed at the final ticketed destination.
Separate purchases usually create separate journeys. Do not tell a calculator that an independently bought onward flight is the destination of the first ticket merely because the passenger intended to connect. Check package terms, travel insurance or a seller's connection guarantee separately.
Input 4: select the legal event
| Event | Key figure |
|---|---|
| Delay | Door-opening delay at final destination |
| Cancellation | Notice date, replacement departure and arrival |
| Denied boarding | Involuntary refusal despite timely presentation |
| Downgrade | Affected sector price and distance |
| Baggage problem | Montreal evidence and deadlines, not EU261 bands |
A diverted flight can be treated as cancellation or delay depending on the airport served and onward transport. A flight brought forward by more than one hour can be cancellation. Choose the factual event before asking the tool for a number.
Input 5: calculate the relevant timing
For delay, compare scheduled final arrival with first door opening. For cancellation, record when information actually reached the passenger and the timings of the offered alternative. The 14-day headline has two shorter notice windows, so “less than fourteen days” is not enough on its own.
Use local time zones carefully and account for daylight-saving changes. If arrival is close to three or four hours, keep multiple records and ask Brussels Airlines for its operational door timestamp.
Input 6: classify the cause
A calculator cannot know whether “operational reasons” are extraordinary. Mark the cause as unverified until Brussels Airlines supplies particulars. Ordinary technical wear, crew planning and internal rotation problems generally remain within airline operations. Severe weather, binding ATC restrictions and external security events may qualify if the carrier proves causation and reasonable measures.
Do not let uncertainty about fixed compensation hide care. Meals, hotel and rerouting can remain due regardless of cause.
Input 7: select the regime
Brussels Airlines is an EU carrier, so EU261 can cover its flights from the EU and its own inbound flights from third countries. UK routes need a UK261 comparison. Canadian journeys may also have APPR rights, while US rules can independently protect refunds after a carrier cancellation or significant change.
Only one payment should compensate the same inconvenience under overlapping regimes. Record all possible systems, then choose the enforceable remedy rather than adding currencies together.
Read the output correctly
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| EUR 250 | Covered journey up to 1,500 km |
| EUR 400 | Intra-EU above 1,500 km or other 1,500-3,500 km journey |
| EUR 600 | Other covered journey above 3,500 km |
| EUR 300 | Possible long-haul 50 percent reduction in a defined delay window |
| No fixed amount | May still have refund, rerouting, care or baggage rights |
The number is per eligible passenger. Enter every traveller, including children with qualifying tickets. Do not multiply meal expenses or a ticket refund by the fixed amount; each remedy has its own calculation.
Turn the estimate into a claim
Create a short calculation record containing:
- exact route and booking reference;
- actual operating airline;
- scheduled and actual final arrival;
- great-circle distance category;
- disruption and notice details;
- known cause and requested evidence;
- amount for each passenger;
- separate schedule of care or replacement costs.
Attach the e-ticket, boarding passes, notices and rerouting. A screenshot of an online result does not prove operator, timing or cause. Use the Brussels Airlines form guide to submit the evidence in the carrier's fields.
Common false results
The most frequent overestimate is treating an SN codeshare as Brussels Airlines-operated. Another is adding the kilometres of every connected leg instead of measuring directly from first departure to final destination. A third is using touchdown rather than door opening. Underestimates often stop at Brussels even though a one-ticket journey continued to Africa or North America.
Recalculate after any new evidence. If the airline produces a different operator, a precise extraordinary event or a corrected arrival time, update that input and preserve both versions.
FAQ
Is the calculator result legally binding on Brussels Airlines?
No. It is an estimate based on entered facts. The itinerary, operational data and cause evidence determine the enforceable claim.
Which destination should I enter after a missed BRU connection?
Enter the last ticketed destination when the flights form one protected reservation. Use Brussels if the first independent ticket ended there.
Should I enter touchdown time?
No. Fixed delay usually uses first door opening with permission to disembark at the final destination.
Can the result include hotel and meal receipts?
Keep those costs in a separate schedule. They can be recoverable in addition to the calculator's fixed amount.
Does an SN flight number prove Brussels Airlines is responsible?
No. Check the named operating carrier on the ticket and boarding pass before assigning liability.
