American Airlines flight compensation: when EU261 or UK261 applies
American Airlines passengers can claim fixed compensation when an eligible flight departs the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom and arrives late, is cancelled at short notice, or involves involuntary denied boarding. American is a United States carrier, so its direct flights starting in the US and arriving in Europe are normally outside EU261 and UK261 fixed-compensation rules. The direction of travel matters as much as the disruption.

Check your American Airlines journey if it started in Europe or the UK. The initial assessment should use the complete itinerary, the airline named beside operated by, and the delay at the final ticketed destination.
The 30-second coverage test
| Journey operated by American | Fixed-compensation position |
|---|---|
| Paris, Madrid, Rome or another EU airport to the US | EU261 can apply |
| Oslo or Reykjavik to the US | EU261-equivalent territorial coverage can apply |
| Zurich to the US | EU passenger-rights coverage can apply |
| London Heathrow to the US | UK261 can apply |
| US airport to Paris, Madrid or another EU destination | Normally no EU261 fixed compensation |
| US airport to London | Normally no UK261 fixed compensation |
| AA flight number operated by BA, Iberia or Finnair | Test the actual operating airline and full direction |
Coverage is only the first gate. A successful delay or cancellation claim also needs the required timing, a qualifying event and no extraordinary circumstance that the airline could not avoid despite reasonable measures.
How much can an eligible passenger receive?
Current EU261 bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 per passenger. Current UK261 bands are GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. Distance, itinerary structure and sometimes the arrival time of rerouting determine the band. A transatlantic American flight departing continental Europe will commonly sit in the long-distance category, but the maximum is not automatic.
For delay, arrival at the final destination generally must be at least three hours late. For cancellation, notice and replacement timing matter. An offer of rerouting can reduce the long-distance amount by 50% when arrival remains within the statutory window. Children travelling on paid tickets can qualify in the same way as adults; a genuinely free infant ticket may require a different analysis.
Compensation is separate from:
- reimbursement of an unused ticket;
- rerouting to the booked destination;
- meals, hotel and airport transport during the wait;
- reasonable expenses when required care was not provided;
- baggage remedies under the Montreal Convention.
Accepting a replacement flight does not by itself remove a valid compensation claim. Accepting a voluntary voucher can be more complicated if its terms settle broader rights, so read the wording before agreeing.
The operating airline decides the first legal question
American sells journeys with British Airways, Iberia, Finnair and other partners. The marketing code at the top of the ticket is not enough. Find the wording operated by on the confirmation, boarding pass or manage-booking page.
This can change the result on an inbound journey. A New York to London segment operated by American is normally outside UK261 fixed compensation. A flight on the same route actually operated by British Airways may fall within the UK regime because BA is a UK carrier. Conversely, a BA flight number operated by American remains an American operation for this test.
Regional US segments sold as American Eagle may be operated by Envoy, Piedmont, PSA, Republic or SkyWest. Keep the operating-airline detail, especially where a regional disruption caused a missed connection on one ticket. The guide to American Eagle operating carriers explains how to identify the correct party.
When delay compensation is realistic
An eligible passenger normally needs all of the following:
- The journey is within EU261 or UK261 territorial scope.
- Arrival at the final destination is at least three hours late.
- The passenger had a confirmed reservation and presented on time.
- The disruption was within the carrier's responsibility, or the carrier has not proved a valid extraordinary circumstance.
- The claim is made within the applicable national limitation period.
Arrival time is usually when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave, not touchdown. On a single reservation from Madrid through Philadelphia to a US city, measure the delay at the last destination. A short delay from Madrid can still produce a qualifying final delay if the connection is missed and rerouting arrives much later.

When a cancellation can lead to compensation
Cancellation creates a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, plus care while waiting. Fixed compensation is a separate question. It may be due when American informed the passenger fewer than 14 days before departure and cannot prove either a compliant replacement timetable or extraordinary circumstances.
The notice date should be supported by the first email, text message, app notification or agent message that actually reached the passenger. An internal decision by the airline does not prove timely notice to the customer. If an OTA held the contact details, preserve both the agent's record and American's communication.
See American Airlines cancelled-flight rights before choosing cash, credit or rerouting.
What does not create a European fixed-compensation claim?
A disrupted American-operated flight from Dallas to Madrid does not become covered merely because it lands in the EU. The same is generally true for Miami to London under UK261. US Department of Transportation rules may still require a refund when American cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger rejects the alternative, but US law does not generally provide the same automatic delay or cancellation amount.
Likewise, dissatisfaction, a minor schedule adjustment, a delay below the statutory threshold or a self-transfer missed connection does not automatically create EUR 600. Baggage delay is governed separately. The page on US-origin American flights sets out honest alternatives for journeys outside the European regimes.
Evidence to save before records disappear
Keep the e-ticket receipt, booking reference, every boarding pass and the original itinerary. Screenshot the operated-by line, scheduled times, live status and replacement options. Save messages showing when the cancellation or reason was communicated. Record the aircraft-door opening time if the claim is near three hours.
For costs, keep itemised receipts and proof that American did not provide a reasonable alternative. Note the names of travelling passengers and whether each had a paid or reward ticket. Do not send original documents that cannot be replaced.
When submitting, state the legal regime, covered route, operating carrier, final arrival delay and amount requested. Ask for a specific factual explanation if the answer only says “operational reasons” or “weather” without linking the event to the flight.
A practical qualifying example
A family of three flies from Madrid to Dallas on a flight operated by American. The aircraft arrives four hours late because a routine technical issue delayed departure. The journey starts in the EU, the long-distance band applies and the cause is not automatically extraordinary. Subject to the evidence, each eligible passenger may have a EUR 600 claim, giving a potential total of EUR 1,800.
On the return Dallas to Madrid flight, the same four-hour disruption has a different legal result. Because American is not an EU carrier and the flight starts outside the EU, EU261 fixed compensation normally does not apply. The family may still pursue a refund after cancellation, contractual assistance or documented baggage and expense remedies where the facts support them.
FAQ
Does EU261 apply to American Airlines?
Yes, when the American-operated flight departs the EU, EEA or Switzerland. It normally does not cover American-operated flights that start in the United States and fly into the EU.
Does UK261 cover American flights from Heathrow?
Yes. A flight departing Heathrow is within UK261 even though American is a US carrier. Eligibility still depends on the disruption, timing and cause.
Can I claim EUR 600 for a US-to-Europe delay?
Usually not when American operated the flight and it began in the US. Check whether a European partner actually operated it and whether another refund or baggage remedy applies.
Is compensation paid per booking or per passenger?
Fixed EU261 and UK261 compensation is generally calculated per eligible passenger, not once per reservation. Individual ticket status and authority still need to be documented.
Can I claim after accepting American's replacement flight?
Yes, accepting rerouting does not automatically cancel a separate fixed-compensation right. The replacement arrival time can affect eligibility or the amount.
