American Airlines delayed flight compensation

A delayed American Airlines flight can qualify for EUR 250-600 when it leaves the EU, EEA or Switzerland, or GBP 220-520 when it leaves the United Kingdom, provided final arrival is sufficiently late and the cause is not exempt. An American-operated journey beginning in the United States and ending in Europe is normally outside these fixed-compensation regimes because American is a US carrier.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Assess a European or UK departure with the ticketed origin, operating airline and final arrival time. Those three facts prevent the most common wrong answer.

The direction rule does not mean every European departure wins. The passenger must still prove the required final delay, confirmed travel and a qualifying cause. American can avoid fixed payment if it proves an extraordinary event and reasonable measures, but care obligations can continue regardless of cause.

Measure delay at the correct destination

For an eligible through itinerary, use the final destination shown on the same reservation. Suppose a passenger travels Paris-Philadelphia-Nashville under one ticket. The Paris flight arrives two hours late, the connection is missed and the replacement reaches Nashville six hours after schedule. The relevant delay is six hours at Nashville, not two hours in Philadelphia.

Separate tickets change the analysis. If Paris-Philadelphia is one booking and Philadelphia-Nashville is an independently purchased ticket, the protected journey may end in Philadelphia. A missed self-transfer is not automatically attributed to American under EU261.

Arrival is generally recorded when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers can disembark. Touchdown, gate arrival on an app and baggage delivery can all be different. For a borderline case, write down the door-opening time and retain timestamped messages or photographs.

The dedicated three-hour American delay guide explains the 180-minute boundary in detail.

Current compensation bands

EU261 uses EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 bands based mainly on the protected journey's great-circle distance. UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. On very long journeys, a delay between three and four hours can reduce the top amount under the applicable rules; once final delay passes four hours, the full long-distance amount is generally the starting point.

Do not calculate only from the disrupted segment when a protected one-ticket connection is involved. Conversely, do not combine separate reservations merely because American sold or displayed both flights in one email.

A claim amount is per eligible passenger. Four paid travellers on a qualifying Paris-Dallas delay may therefore have four claims. Meal or hotel expenses are reimbursed according to actual reasonable cost and should not be multiplied as a flat rate.

Use the American compensation amount calculator guide to choose the correct currency and distance band.

Causes that may support payment

Routine technical defects, ordinary crew-planning problems and many operational knock-on issues are not automatically extraordinary under European case law. American should identify the event, show how it affected the specific flight and explain what reasonable measures were attempted.

Weather and air-traffic-control restrictions can be extraordinary, but a generic label is not enough to settle every case. Compare airport conditions, other departures, the aircraft's prior rotation and the actual restriction period. A storm that closes the departure runway is different from a later staffing problem after conditions recover.

Security events, airport closure, bird strike and external system failure can require a fact-specific assessment. Even when fixed compensation is excluded, rerouting and care can remain due on a covered flight.

What American should provide during the wait

For EU261 and UK261 departures, care begins at delay thresholds tied to distance. It can include suitable meals and refreshments, two communications, hotel accommodation when an overnight stay becomes necessary, and transport between the airport and hotel. This right does not depend on the passenger eventually meeting the three-hour compensation threshold.

Ask staff or the app for vouchers first. If adequate care is not offered, buy reasonable items and keep itemised receipts. Premium alcohol, luxury accommodation and costs unrelated to the wait are difficult to recover. Photograph any service-desk closure and preserve chat transcripts showing that help was requested.

At five hours of departure delay, a covered passenger who no longer wishes to travel can have a reimbursement choice. That decision has consequences, so review the five-hour delay refund guide before abandoning the trip.

Build a strong delay file

Save:

  • the e-ticket receipt and booking reference;
  • boarding passes for every flown and replacement segment;
  • the original and revised schedules;
  • the exact operated-by wording;
  • messages about cause and estimated times;
  • final door-opening or disembarkation evidence;
  • receipts for reasonable care costs;
  • proof of the final one-ticket destination.

State the route direction prominently in the claim: “American-operated flight departing Paris” or “American-operated flight departing Heathrow.” This immediately identifies why a non-European airline can still be covered. Include the final arrival delay, amount requested and a request for the factual cause.

If American replies that EU261 does not apply because it is a US airline, the answer is incomplete for a flight departing the EU. Cite the departure rule and ask for reassessment. If the journey began in the US, do not make the opposite error; inspect the operating carrier before deciding whether any European fixed-compensation route exists.

Examples that show the direction difference

Frankfurt to Charlotte, American operated: final arrival is four hours late after an ordinary aircraft defect. The flight departs the EU, so EU261 can apply. The distance is in the long-haul band and a EUR 600 claim per eligible passenger may be realistic.

Charlotte to Frankfurt, American operated: the same delay normally falls outside EU261 fixed compensation because the non-EU carrier begins outside the EU. US refund rights generally require cancellation or a significant change rejected by the passenger; they do not create an automatic cash award merely for a completed four-hour delay.

London to Dallas, American operated: UK261 can apply because the flight leaves the UK. The current top band is GBP 520, subject to delay duration and any lawful reduction.

Dallas to London, BA operated under an AA code: the operating airline is British Airways, so inbound UK coverage may exist. The code printed before the flight number does not control the result.

FAQ

Is a two-hour American Airlines delay compensated?

Usually not with a fixed EU261 or UK261 payment. Care may begin before three hours, depending on distance, and a missed connection can create a longer final-arrival delay.

What if the aircraft landed before three hours but the door opened later?

Door opening is generally the relevant arrival event. Preserve evidence if the difference moves the claim across the 180-minute threshold.

Does bad weather always defeat an American delay claim?

No. American must connect the weather to the flight and show reasonable measures. Genuine severe conditions can exclude fixed compensation while care remains due.

Can an award ticket qualify for compensation?

Yes, publicly available reward tickets can qualify under EU261 or UK261. Mileage restoration and upgrade issues are separate from the fixed payment.

Where do I measure a delay after a missed connection?

On one protected reservation, measure arrival at the final ticketed destination. With separate tickets, the first booking's destination may end the legal journey.
