American Airlines family and group compensation claims
Fixed EU261 or UK261 compensation is generally calculated per eligible passenger, so a family or group on a covered American Airlines departure can have several EUR 250-600 or GBP 220-520 claims. The journey must start in Europe or the UK when American operates it. American-operated US-origin flights normally do not gain European payment because the passengers live in Europe or booked as a group.

Per-passenger calculation
| Travellers | Potential long-haul fixed total |
|---|---|
| 2 passengers on covered EU departure | Up to EUR 1,200 |
| Family of 4 on covered EU departure | Up to EUR 2,400 |
| 3 passengers on covered UK departure | Up to GBP 1,560 |
| American-operated US-origin group | Normally no EU/UK fixed total |
Maximum figures require full long-distance amount, qualifying event and no extraordinary defence. Three-to-four-hour arrival can reduce the top band.
Children and infants
Fare-paying children generally qualify like adults. Keep each e-ticket. A child using an award ticket available through a frequent-flyer programme can also qualify.
A genuinely free infant without a paid fare can require different treatment under the regulation. Preserve infant ticket, taxes and fare line rather than assuming inclusion or exclusion.
Unaccompanied minors may need a parent or guardian to submit, together with authority and relationship evidence requested by American.
One representative and authority
American can require proof that one person may act for other adults. Obtain signed authority and payment instructions. For minors, include guardian details without sending excessive sensitive documents.
List every passenger, ticket number and amount. A booking reference alone does not show who actually travelled or was affected.
Large organised groups may have a group contract and lead name. That commercial arrangement does not reduce individual statutory amounts, but authority and ticket proof become more important.
Mixed eligibility in one party
Some passengers may travel on different tickets, join at another airport or accept different rerouting. Assess each protected journey.
A family can also split choices: one parent takes earliest rerouting while another accepts refund with a child. Record which coupons and remedies apply to each person. Do not claim a full refund for transportation one passenger used.
If one traveller volunteers during overbooking and others are involuntarily denied, their payment bases differ.
Shared care expenses
Fixed compensation multiplies per passenger; actual expenses do not. Claim one hotel room, taxi or shared meal receipt at real cost and identify whom it served.
Separate individual costs such as a child's necessary item. Keep itemised receipts and avoid multiplying a shared purchase by the number of travellers.
On a covered EU or UK journey, care can remain due during extraordinary weather even when the family's fixed payment is zero.
Direction and codeshare
A Paris-Dallas family journey operated by American can qualify under EU261. Dallas-Paris operated by American normally cannot. Residence, citizenship and family package location do not change this.
If Iberia operates an AA-coded Dallas-Madrid flight or BA operates New York-London, inbound coverage can exist. Save operated-by wording for every family member's ticket.
Missed connections
On one reservation, measure arrival at the final destination. If Madrid-Philadelphia-Orlando arrives six hours late after a missed connection, calculate each eligible passenger at Orlando.
Separate tickets can create mixed outcomes. A parent and child on the through ticket may qualify while a relative on an independent domestic reservation does not.
The American missed-connection guide explains final-destination evidence.
Evidence bundle
Keep:
- complete passenger list;
- e-ticket for each traveller;
- infant or child fare proof;
- boarding passes;
- operated-by detail;
- original and replacement itinerary;
- final arrival;
- authority forms;
- expense allocation;
- payment records and any offers accepted.
Use one cover table but retain individual attachments. Redact unrelated identity information.
Examples
Family of four Madrid-Miami, five-hour controllable delay: EU261 covers departure. Potential fixed total is EUR 2,400, plus separate reasonable care expenses.
Three travellers Heathrow-Dallas, 3h 30m late: UK261 covers departure. Long-distance reduction can produce GBP 260 each, total GBP 780.
Five passengers Dallas-Paris on American: EU261 fixed total is normally zero because American operates from the US. Refund or baggage claims can still be individual.
One adult volunteers, two are denied boarding: the volunteer receives agreed benefits; involuntarily denied passengers use statutory rules.
Claim wording
State the covered route and event once, then provide a passenger table with ticket number and amount. Add a separate expense table. Explain authority and payment account.
The American amount guide supports arithmetic, and the claim guide supports submission.
Group booking evidence
For a corporate, school or tour booking, obtain the passenger manifest, individual ticket numbers and proof that each person presented and travelled or was denied. An invoice issued to one organisation does not remove individual statutory status.
The organiser should disclose whether it claims as agent or has received assignment. Avoid conflicting submissions from passenger and organiser. American may request authority before paying into one account.
Different final destinations
A party can share the first flight but separate later. Calculate each passenger at that person's final ticketed destination. Someone ending in Dallas may arrive two hours late while a companion connecting to Austin arrives six hours late and crosses the threshold.
Do not copy one delay figure across the manifest. Add original arrival, replacement arrival and amount to each row.
Refund allocation
When American cancels and only part of the family abandons travel, identify unused fare and ancillary services per ticket. Shared package pricing or companion discounts can require issuer fare construction. Do not simply divide the reservation total by headcount when tickets have different values.
Fixed compensation remains statutory per passenger and is not reduced because one traveller paid for everyone. Ticket reimbursement follows actual unused price.
Privacy and minors
Send only documents needed to prove identity, authority and travel. Redact unrelated passport numbers, health information and financial transactions. Store children's records securely and use American's official channel.
If parents have different surnames or authority is disputed, prepare relationship and consent evidence early without publishing it in open correspondence.
FAQ
Is compensation paid once per family booking?
No. Fixed compensation is generally per eligible passenger.
Do children receive the full amount?
Fare-paying children generally do. Keep the ticket; genuinely free infant travel can require separate analysis.
Can one adult submit for everyone?
Yes when American accepts the representative and appropriate authority is provided for other adults and minors.
Are shared hotel costs multiplied by passenger count?
No. Claim the actual reasonable shared cost once, separately from per-person fixed compensation.
Does European residence cover a family flying from the US?
No. An American-operated US-origin flight normally remains outside EU261 and UK261 fixed compensation.
