American Airlines missed connection: compensation and rerouting
A missed American Airlines connection can qualify for EU261 or UK261 compensation when the complete journey is on one reservation, starts in Europe or the UK, and final arrival is at least three hours late for a non-exempt reason. A self-transfer is normally assessed as separate tickets. A journey beginning in the US on American usually falls outside European fixed compensation.

Coverage before connection timing
| Itinerary | Initial fixed-claim result |
|---|---|
| Madrid-Philadelphia-Nashville on one ticket | EU261 can cover final arrival |
| Heathrow-Dallas-Phoenix on one ticket | UK261 can cover final arrival |
| Miami-Madrid-Rome on American then separate ticket | Do not automatically combine |
| Dallas-London-Europe, American-operated first flight | Normally no UK261 fixed claim from US origin |
| US-London-Europe with BA operating protected segment | Reassess operator and ticket structure |
The minimum connection time used by American does not itself decide compensation. What matters is whether the passenger held a confirmed protected itinerary, complied with boarding requirements and arrived late at the contractual final destination.
One reservation versus self-transfer
A single reservation commonly has one booking reference and ticketed coupons for all segments. Baggage may be checked through, and American is responsible for rebooking after a protected misconnection. Save the full e-ticket rather than only the first boarding pass.
An OTA can display independent tickets as one convenient journey. Look for separate ticket numbers, separate check-in and a warning about self-transfer. If the first booking ends in Philadelphia and a separately purchased flight leaves later, EU261 does not automatically treat the second destination as part of the first journey.
Travel insurance or an OTA guarantee may help with a self-transfer, but that is different from statutory fixed compensation.
Measure at the final ticketed destination
Suppose American's Madrid-Philadelphia flight arrives two hours late. The passenger misses the same-ticket connection to Raleigh and reaches Raleigh five hours after schedule. The relevant delay is five hours at Raleigh.
Arrival is generally when at least one aircraft door opens and disembarkation is permitted. Preserve the final replacement boarding pass, not merely the late transatlantic status.
If rerouting arrives under three hours late, a delay claim may fail even though the connection was stressful. Cancellation, denied boarding and care can use other tests.
Keep scheduled time zones consistent when calculating the result. Converting every timestamp to local destination time prevents an apparent hour from being added or removed by a transatlantic time-zone change.
Rebooking after the connection is lost
Ask American for rerouting to the final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions on a covered EU or UK journey. A reasonable partner flight can be relevant; passengers need not assume the next American-only service is the sole option.
At a US entry airport, immigration, customs and security can consume connection time. If the inbound aircraft was punctual but the passenger missed the onward flight because personal processing took unusually long, causation may be disputed. Keep queue records, official disruption notices and evidence of when the aircraft parked.
Do not buy an expensive replacement immediately without requesting rerouting and documenting available alternatives. If American refuses a reasonable route, screenshot inventory and preserve the refusal before self-funding.
The oneworld rerouting guide explains partner options and evidence.
Compensation and care
For a covered final delay of at least three hours, current EU261 amounts are EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600; UK261 amounts are GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520. Distance is assessed for the protected journey, and long-distance three-to-four-hour arrival can permit a reduction.
American can avoid fixed payment by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. It cannot erase care simply by citing weather. Meals, hotel and airport transport can remain due while the passenger waits for rerouting.
Keep itemised receipts if adequate vouchers or accommodation were not supplied. A shared taxi is claimed at actual cost, not once per passenger.
Operating carrier across segments
An AA-coded transatlantic flight may be operated by British Airways, Iberia or Finnair. A domestic segment sold as American Eagle may be operated by a regional airline. Record the operator for each segment because the entity causing the missed connection and the territorial status can differ.
For an EU departure on one ticket, non-EU American operation is still covered. On an inbound US-origin trip, a European partner's operation can make the difference between a viable fixed claim and no European payment.
Evidence checklist
Keep:
- complete e-ticket and ticket numbers;
- original connection times;
- boarding passes for all original and replacement flights;
- operated-by detail for each segment;
- final door-opening evidence;
- messages explaining delay and rebooking;
- immigration or security disruption evidence where relevant;
- care receipts and hotel confirmation;
- screenshots of reasonable alternatives refused.
Write a chronology with scheduled and actual times. Explain that all sectors were under one reservation and identify final destination. If American responds only about the first segment's two-hour delay, point to the later protected arrival.
Contrasting examples
Paris-Philadelphia-Orlando, one ticket: American's first flight is 100 minutes late, the onward flight is missed and Orlando arrival is six hours late. EU261 can assess the six-hour final delay and long-distance amount.
Paris-Philadelphia plus separate low-cost ticket: the first flight arrives 100 minutes late and the separate flight is missed. The protected American journey may end in Philadelphia, below the compensation threshold.
Heathrow-Dallas-Austin, one ticket: a controllable delay causes arrival four hours late. UK261 can support GBP 520 per eligible passenger, subject to distance and cause.
Dallas-Heathrow-Manchester, American operates from Dallas: fixed UK261 normally does not attach to the inbound American operation merely because the final destination is in Britain. Check whether BA operated any relevant segment.
FAQ
Is a missed connection automatically compensated?
No. Check one-ticket structure, European or UK scope, final arrival delay and cause.
Where is final delay measured?
At the last ticketed destination on the protected reservation, generally using aircraft-door opening.
Does a self-transfer count as one journey?
Usually not. Separate tickets are assessed independently even when an OTA displays them together.
Must American rebook me on a partner?
On a covered journey, rerouting should be at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. Document reasonable partner availability and any refusal.
Can a US-origin connection receive EU261?
Not normally when American operates the relevant inbound flight. A European operating partner can change the scope analysis.
