Air Serbia cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation

Short answer: when Air Serbia cancels a covered flight, the passenger should first choose reimbursement or replacement transport. Care can be due while waiting. Fixed compensation is a separate question based on legal coverage, notice, replacement timing and cause. An EU departure can produce EUR 250-600 under EU261; a departure from Belgrade normally uses Serbian passenger law instead.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Do not let a single “accept” button combine all remedies. A voucher, cash refund, later rebooking and earliest rerouting are materially different choices.

This guide uses official rules and procedures reviewed on 13 August 2026.

Confirm that the flight was cancelled

A flight is cancelled when the planned service is not operated and the passenger is moved to another service, even if the airline describes the event as a schedule adjustment. A substantial advance of departure can also be treated as cancellation under EU case law. A flight-number change is evidence but not the only criterion.

Save the original itinerary before accepting a replacement. Record:

  • scheduled date, flight number and route;
  • time and wording of the first notice;
  • every alternative proposed by Air Serbia;
  • actual departure and arrival of any replacement;
  • reason given at each stage;
  • operating carrier on both original and substitute sectors.

The exact timestamp of notice matters. An email dated 13 days before departure may lead to a different fixed-payment test from a message sent 15 days ahead.

Choose the transport remedy

The main statutory choices after a covered cancellation are usually:

ChoiceSuitable whenMain consequence
Refund of the unused ticketthe trip no longer serves its purposeAir Serbia no longer has to carry the refunded journey
Earliest reroutingreaching the destination remains importantcarrier should offer a workable comparable route
Later reroutingthe passenger wants to travel on another suitable dateseat availability and governing rules matter
Voucheronly when its terms are genuinely preferredvoluntary credit should not silently replace cash rights

If cancellation occurs after the trip has begun and the remaining journey no longer serves its purpose, reimbursement can include the used part and a return to the first departure point where the legal conditions are met. State why the trip became pointless; do not merely request a full refund after using most transport.

The refund, voucher and rerouting comparison examines how each selection affects the rest of the booking.

Fixed compensation depends on direction

Air Serbia is not incorporated in the EU. The coverage matrix therefore matters:

Cancelled Air Serbia-operated itineraryUsual regime to examine first
Vienna-BelgradeEU261
Belgrade-ViennaSerbian passenger legislation
London-BelgradeUK261
Belgrade-LondonSerbian law; generally not UK261
Toronto-BelgradeCanadian APPR plus Serbian issues where relevant
New York-BelgradeUS DOT refund rules and applicable contract; not EU261 solely because Europe is the destination

On a single ticket, the complete journey can matter. Madrid-Belgrade-Shanghai begins in the EU and may carry EU261 protection to Shanghai when the conditions are met. Shanghai-Belgrade-Madrid begins in a third country and is operated by a non-EU airline, so it does not mirror the outbound analysis.

Notice and substitute timing

Under current EU261, fixed cancellation compensation is generally excluded if notice arrived at least 14 days before departure. With shorter notice, Air Serbia can avoid the fixed amount by proving that a replacement within the statutory departure and arrival windows was offered.

Notice before departureEU261 replacement test in summary
14 days or moreno fixed cancellation payment
7-13 daysoffer must leave no more than two hours early and arrive under four hours late
Less than 7 daysoffer must leave no more than one hour early and arrive under two hours late

These windows address the fixed amount; they do not remove the passenger's refund-or-rerouting choice. The passenger should preserve the actual substitute timing, because an offer that looked compliant can arrive outside its window.

Serbian law contains EU-style cancellation provisions, but the claim should cite the Serbian basis for a Belgrade departure rather than labelling it EU261. UK and Canadian cancellations have their own rules and clocks.

Extraordinary events do not erase every right

Air Serbia can resist EU261 fixed compensation if it proves both an extraordinary circumstance and reasonable measures. A generic phrase such as “flight disruption” does not answer either element.

Potentially external causes include severe weather, airport closure, security risks and binding air-traffic restrictions. Ordinary technical defects, routine crew planning and commercial consolidation ordinarily require closer scrutiny. Even where the external defence succeeds, the passenger keeps the transport choice and qualifying care.

Ask Air Serbia to identify the event, its start and end, the affected flight rotation and the alternatives considered. If a morning restriction ended but the evening cancellation resulted from an unrecovered schedule, mitigation becomes especially relevant.

Care while waiting for a replacement

Where the replacement leaves later, the carrier's duty can include reasonable food and communication at distance-based waiting thresholds. An overnight delay can require hotel accommodation and transfers. Care is practical support, not a substitute for compensation.

Request vouchers, room and transport at the airport or through Air Serbia's notified channel. If the offered hotel is inaccessible, no representative can be reached or assistance arrives too late, choose a reasonable option and retain itemised receipts. Alcohol, luxury rooms and unrelated shopping are difficult to justify.

The dedicated Air Serbia care-expense guide gives a clean way to present those receipts.

What if Air Serbia offers an unsuitable replacement?

State the destination and urgency, then ask in writing for the earliest comparable route. Search realistic alternatives, including partner services, but give the carrier a fair opportunity to arrange them. Screenshot options that were available at the time.

Self-booking is strongest when Air Serbia cancelled, the proposed arrival was materially later, a reasonable alternative existed, and the passenger documented unsuccessful contact. Buying an expensive ticket without asking for rerouting creates avoidable risk. The legal duty also varies across EU261, Serbian law, UK261 and APPR.

Do not cancel the reservation through a voluntary-cancellation menu after receiving a carrier cancellation. That can make the record look as though the passenger initiated the event.

Prepare the claim in separate sections

Use this order:

  1. identify the cancelled service, ticket and operating carrier;
  2. state the journey's governing passenger-rights regime;
  3. provide notice time and exact replacement offered;
  4. explain the chosen refund or rerouting remedy;
  5. calculate any fixed compensation per passenger;
  6. list care and alternative-transport costs individually;
  7. attach the original schedule, notices, boarding documents and receipts.

Air Serbia's claims portal covers flight complaints and asks for enough detail to identify the reservation. For a Serbian-procedure case, send the carrier complaint within 90 days. Keep the confirmation because the later 60-day response period and Civil Aviation Directorate route depend on proving a complete prior complaint.

If the refusal relies on an unclear reason, use the Air Serbia rejected-claim guide before escalating.

FAQ

Can I obtain both a refund and cancellation compensation?

Yes, where separate conditions are met. Refund repays transport not provided, while fixed compensation addresses inconvenience. They should be calculated and requested separately.

Must I accept an Air Serbia voucher?

No. A voucher is a voluntary alternative when a monetary refund is legally due. Read expiry, transfer, route and residual-balance terms before agreeing.

Does 14 days remove all Air Serbia obligations?

No. Sufficient advance notice can remove the EU261 fixed cancellation amount, but the carrier still must deal with the cancelled transport through the applicable refund or rerouting rules.

What if Air Serbia cancels because of bad weather?

Genuine severe weather may defeat fixed compensation. It does not automatically remove rerouting, refund and qualifying care, and the airline should still explain the causal link.

Is Belgrade-to-Paris cancellation an EU261 case?

Normally not when Air Serbia operates it, because departure is outside the EU and Air Serbia is not an EU carrier. Serbian passenger law remains relevant.
