Air Serbia care: hotel, meals, calls and transport expenses

Short answer: during a qualifying Air Serbia delay, cancellation or involuntary denied boarding, the airline can owe reasonable meals, communication, accommodation and airport-hotel transport. These services are separate from fixed compensation and can remain due even when weather or ATC proves extraordinary. Ask Air Serbia to provide care first; if help is unavailable or ineffective, keep itemised receipts for proportionate self-arranged expenses.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The exact duty depends on origin and legal regime. Canadian APPR care is more closely tied to airline-control categories than EU261, UK261 and Serbia's EU-style framework.

Current Air Serbia and authority guidance was reviewed on 13 August 2026.

Air Serbia's waiting thresholds

The carrier's passenger-rights notice uses distance and anticipated delay:

Flight categoryWaiting period that can activate care
1,500 km or lesstwo hours
longer intra-ECAA travel and other routes 1,500-3,500 kmthree hours
other journeys over 3,500 kmfour hours

Once the relevant threshold is met, refreshments should be reasonable in relation to waiting time. If the expected new departure is the following day, hotel accommodation and transfers between airport and lodging can be required.

Care can start before the three-hour final-arrival compensation threshold. Do not wait for a fixed-payment decision before asking for food.

What reasonable care can include

ExpenseNormally defensible when neededCommon problem
Meal and non-alcoholic drinkproportionate to wait and locationluxury dining or alcohol
Hotel roomovernight replacement requires staypremium suite without necessity
Airport-hotel transferlodging is off airportunrelated city travel
Telephone or internetcontacting family, hotel or onward providerexcessive roaming unrelated to disruption
Essential accessibility costneeded because offered care is inaccessibleno explanation or evidence
Visa or entry charge caused by reroutingfact-specific necessityassuming every transit cost is covered

Air Serbia does not have to reimburse all purchases made during a delay. The expense must be necessary, reasonable and linked to the carrier's unfulfilled duty.

Request assistance before spending

At the airport, ask the Air Serbia desk or notified support channel for vouchers, hotel and transfer. Record the time, response and name or role of staff. If a digital voucher is promised, save the message and whether it actually worked.

Self-arrangement becomes stronger when:

  1. no representative or usable channel is available;
  2. the offered meal outlet is closed;
  3. the hotel is inaccessible or cannot accommodate the travelling party;
  4. the carrier refuses care on the incorrect ground that weather removes it;
  5. waiting longer would leave the passenger without safe lodging.

Choose a practical nearby option and explain any unusual cost, such as the only wheelchair-accessible room available.

Extraordinary circumstances do not settle care

Under EU261, a proven extraordinary cause can remove fixed compensation but not the Article 9 duty of care. UK CAA guidance states the same practical principle for covered UK journeys. Air Serbia's Serbian notice also provides assistance at the defined thresholds.

Therefore severe fog at BEG can justify cancellation and still leave Air Serbia responsible for an overnight room. The passenger should not add the hotel to the EUR fixed amount; it is a separate reimbursement line.

Canadian APPR distinguishes events within control, within control for safety and outside control. Standards of treatment generally arise for the first two categories when notice and wait conditions are met. A Toronto claim should use the Canadian classification rather than assume EU care applies identically.

On one protected connection, care can be required at Belgrade while Air Serbia reroutes the passenger to the final destination. Separate tickets may prevent the onward self-transfer from becoming part of the first carrier's duty.

The Belgrade missed-connection guide addresses overnight transfer cases.

Families and special needs

Care should reflect the actual travelling party. A family cannot reasonably be expected to share one single room with no suitable beds when several ticketed passengers are stranded. Keep the hotel occupancy record and explain room choices.

Passengers with reduced mobility, medical needs or accompanying assistance should tell Air Serbia immediately. If rerouting or lodging is unsuitable, describe the accessibility barrier and request an alternative before arranging it independently where possible.

Medication replacement, medical treatment and special dietary cost can require evidence and may fall partly under insurance or Montreal damages rather than ordinary refreshments.

Receipts that survive review

An effective receipt shows merchant, date, items, amount and currency. Keep both the itemised bill and payment proof. For accommodation, obtain an invoice with passenger name, night and room type. For transport, record origin and destination.

Create a table:

Convert currency only in a separate total and state the rate source and date. Do not discard originals after uploading scans.

Claim presentation

Start with booking, affected flight, operating carrier and wait. State which care was requested, what Air Serbia did and why each self-arranged cost was necessary. Attach the disruption notice, replacement itinerary and itemised evidence.

Do not demand lost wages as “care.” Proven international delay losses can require Montreal Convention analysis, with causation and mitigation. Package-holiday costs may belong partly to the organiser.

For a Serbia-origin case, submit within 90 days and keep the Air Serbia case confirmation. If fixed compensation is disputed, ask the carrier to decide care expenses independently.

The Air Serbia claim-form guide shows how to separate those lines in the portal.

FAQ

Does bad weather remove my Air Serbia hotel right?

Not under qualifying EU261, UK261 or Serbian care rules. Weather can defeat fixed compensation while reasonable overnight assistance remains due.

Can I book any hotel I choose?

Choose a reasonable, safe option suited to the party and location. Explain higher cost caused by availability, accessibility or urgent circumstances.

Is a bank statement enough for meal reimbursement?

It proves payment but not what was purchased. An itemised receipt is much stronger and helps exclude alcohol or unrelated items.

Does Air Serbia owe transport to the hotel?

When overnight accommodation is required, qualifying care includes transport between the airport and lodging, not only the room.

Can care costs be claimed in addition to EUR 600?

Yes when both rights independently apply. Fixed compensation addresses inconvenience, while care reimbursement repays reasonable expenditure.
