Air Serbia refund, voucher or rerouting: choose carefully
Short answer: after an Air Serbia cancellation or qualifying long delay, choose between money back and replacement travel according to whether the journey still has value. A voucher is an optional contractual alternative, not the default form of a statutory cash refund. Accepting reimbursement normally ends Air Serbia's duty to carry the refunded sectors; accepting rerouting does not automatically waive a separate fixed-compensation claim.

Compare the three options
| Option | Best suited to | Main consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Cash reimbursement | trip no longer serves its purpose | unused transport is repaid; carriage normally ends |
| Earliest rerouting | passenger still needs to arrive | Air Serbia must provide a workable replacement under applicable law |
| Later rerouting | travel remains wanted on another date | availability and legal regime govern choice |
| Voucher or credit | passenger genuinely values flexible future use | terms, expiry and transfer restrictions become important |
Do not request full ticket reimbursement and simultaneously insist that Air Serbia transport the passenger to the same destination on that ticket. If only part is unused, identify the exact coupons.
When refund becomes available
Cancellation generally creates an immediate refund-or-rerouting election. A departure delay of at least five hours can also permit abandonment and reimbursement under EU261, UK261 and Air Serbia's Serbian notice. US DOT requires refund after cancellation or a qualifying significant change when the passenger rejects alternatives. Canadian APPR has its own rebooking and refund structure.
If travel has started and the remainder no longer serves the original plan, repayment can include the used part and a return to the first departure point where statutory conditions are met. Explain the lost purpose, such as an event that ended before any feasible arrival.
The Air Serbia five-hour guide covers delayed-departure abandonment without confusing it with voluntary cancellation.
Rerouting at the earliest opportunity
Ask for a confirmed route to the final ticketed destination in comparable conditions. A standby listing without a seat may not be effective rerouting.
When Air Serbia's own option arrives materially later, identify realistic partner or alternative flights and ask the carrier to use them. UK CAA guidance expressly recognises that another airline or suitable transport can be required where it reaches the destination significantly sooner. EU and Serbian obligations should be applied to the individual circumstances.
Keep screenshots with date, price and seat availability. Give Air Serbia a reasonable chance to arrange the route before self-booking unless urgency or lack of contact makes that impossible.
Voucher is a voluntary choice
A travel credit can be useful when it is worth more than cash, transferable, broadly usable and does not expire. It can be poor value if limited to the named passenger, fare only, one transaction or a short booking period.
Before accepting, record:
- cash amount otherwise due;
- voucher face value;
- expiry and travel-by date;
- route and currency restrictions;
- whether residual balance survives partial use;
- transferability;
- whether acceptance settles refund, compensation or both.
Under EU-style rules, payment by travel voucher instead of money requires passenger agreement. Canadian APPR similarly sets informed written conditions and requires a non-expiring alternative for a refund. US DOT does not let an airline impose credit when the traveller rejects alternatives and requests the qualifying refund.
Refund timing differs by regime
| Applicable source | Current refund timing in summary |
|---|---|
| EU261 transport reimbursement | seven days |
| Serbian passenger-rights notice | EU-style prompt reimbursement provision |
| UK261 | seven-day statutory structure |
| Canadian APPR refund | 30 days |
| US DOT credit-card refund | seven business days |
| US DOT other-payment refund | 20 calendar days |
These periods answer ticket repayment, not the time to decide fixed compensation. If an OTA took payment, processing can involve the merchant, but the passenger should preserve the statutory basis and identify who holds the funds.
The future EU reform adopted in 2026 had not started to apply on the review date. Do not substitute a future 14-day automatic-refund rule for the current EU timeframe.
Fixed compensation remains separate
A passenger who accepts rerouting can still qualify for EUR 250-600, UK sterling amounts or Canadian APPR compensation when the separate conditions are met. A replacement that arrives within defined windows can reduce or remove the fixed sum, but transport acceptance is not a blanket waiver.
Choosing refund can also coexist with cancellation compensation. State the two amounts separately:
- ticket reimbursement for unused carriage;
- fixed compensation for inconvenience;
- care and reasonable expense reimbursement;
- ancillary-service refund.
An extraordinary event can defeat the fixed line without eliminating refund and rerouting.
One booking through Belgrade
If the disrupted itinerary contains several Air Serbia sectors under one reservation, choose the remedy for the complete remaining journey. A refund at BEG may include return to origin when continuing has become pointless. Earliest rerouting should reach the final city, not simply the next connection point.
Separate tickets require caution. Refunding the first booking does not automatically reimburse a separately purchased onward service. Insurance, flexible fare or Montreal damages may need review.
The Belgrade connection guide explains the contract boundary.
Evidence before selecting
Save the cancellation or delay notice, original ticket, alternative offered, final-arrival difference, available competing transport and screenshot of every choice screen. Record whether a travel agent or Air Serbia processed the selection.
In the claim, state:
- why the transport remedy became available;
- which option was selected and when;
- exact unused sectors and fare;
- whether any voucher was declined or accepted;
- separate fixed and expense requests;
- original payment method and account details.
For Serbian procedure, submit within 90 days and preserve the 60-day complete-file response stage. A refund request should not be delayed while Air Serbia debates extraordinary circumstances because cause does not decide the basic cancellation choice.
FAQ
Must I accept Air Serbia travel credit after cancellation?
No. Where a monetary refund is due, a voucher should be an informed voluntary alternative rather than an imposed replacement.
Can I choose refund after accepting and using rerouting?
Not generally for the same transport already supplied. Fixed compensation and documented care expenses can remain separate.
Does accepting a replacement waive EUR 600?
No automatic waiver follows. Coverage, notice, final arrival and cause determine the fixed claim, and a timely replacement can affect the amount.
Can Air Serbia refund only part of a connected ticket?
It depends on unused coupons and whether used travel became pointless. State the full itinerary and explain why return to origin or broader repayment is required.
Who refunds a ticket bought through an OTA?
The seller or merchant may process the money, while Air Serbia remains relevant to the disrupted carriage. Identify the issuer, ticket stock and card charge.
