Air Serbia disruption at Belgrade Airport: what to do

Short answer: after an Air Serbia delay or cancellation at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, secure a written replacement itinerary, ask for qualifying meals and hotel, confirm baggage handling and preserve the stated cause. A journey starting at BEG ordinarily uses Serbian passenger legislation, not EU261. An EU-origin one-ticket connection that is disrupted in Belgrade may retain EU261 protection to its final destination.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The airport location does not by itself decide the law. Determine where the protected journey began and whether Belgrade is the origin, connection or unintended diversion point.

This airport-focused guidance was checked on 13 August 2026.

First classify why you are at BEG

SituationMain starting point
Passenger begins travel in BelgradeSerbian passenger rights
One-ticket journey began in the EU and connects at BEGEU261 can continue to final destination
One-ticket journey began in LondonUK261 can remain relevant
Separate onward ticket from BEGself-transfer; contracts normally remain separate
Flight diverted into BEG instead of booked airportmeasure transport to the original destination

An Air Serbia boarding pass is not enough to decide. Keep the e-ticket showing the full origin and destination.

Seven immediate actions

  1. Save the original schedule before the app updates it.
  2. Ask Air Serbia for the disruption reason in writing.
  3. Obtain confirmed rerouting to the final destination.
  4. Request food and communication when the waiting threshold is met.
  5. Ask for hotel and transfers if departure moves to the next day.
  6. Check whether bags are transferred, held or available for collection.
  7. Keep itemised receipts and every replacement boarding pass.

Airport display photographs help establish the timeline, but they do not replace the contract or prove the underlying cause. Record what Air Serbia staff say and note the time and location.

Delay thresholds at Belgrade

Air Serbia's passenger-rights notice links care to scheduled flight distance:

Distance categoryWaiting time that can activate care
1,500 km or lesstwo hours
specified medium-distance flightsthree hours
longer journeysfour hours

At five hours of departure delay, the passenger can normally choose to abandon the trip and request reimbursement under the applicable framework. That choice differs from fixed delay compensation.

For a Serbia-origin delay, do not promise an automatic three-hour EU261 payment. Serbian CAD notes that its statute does not express delay compensation exactly as Court of Justice case law, although ECAA carriers should consider that practice.

Cancellation: refund or rerouting

When Air Serbia cancels a protected service from Belgrade, the passenger normally chooses between repayment and replacement transport. If continuing is important, ask for the earliest workable route rather than clicking a cash refund. Once the ticket is refunded, the duty to carry that same journey generally ends.

If Air Serbia proposes a departure days later while a realistic partner route leaves earlier, request that alternative and preserve its availability. Give the carrier a reasonable chance to arrange it before purchasing an expensive replacement.

Fixed cancellation compensation under Serbian law depends on notice, replacement timing and cause. A genuine extraordinary event can remove the fixed amount but not the core transport choice or care.

The Air Serbia cancellation guide provides the notice windows and evidence.

Meals, hotel and transfers

Care should be proportionate to the wait. It can include reasonable refreshments, communication, overnight accommodation and transport between BEG and lodging. Ask Air Serbia to arrange these first.

If no effective assistance is supplied:

  • choose a practical hotel rather than luxury accommodation;
  • keep an invoice showing guest, date and location;
  • retain meal receipts with individual items;
  • document taxi or public-transport cost to and from the hotel;
  • explain why the purchase was necessary.

Air Serbia may reject a card statement because it does not identify what was bought. The care-expense guide shows how to list each cost.

Airline cause versus airport cause

The fact that disruption occurred at BEG does not establish that the airport caused it. Separate:

Possible eventEvidence to request
Air Serbia technical faultdefect category, aircraft record and mitigation
Air Serbia crew issuescheduling reason and replacement options
Airport closure or equipment failureauthority notice and affected period
Serbian or regional ATC restrictionslot or airspace decision
Severe weatherobservations, warnings and operational limits
Earlier rotation problemoriginal event and causal chain to this flight

Ordinary airline technical and staffing risks are assessed differently from external ATC or extreme weather. Even an external event requires a reasonable response.

Connections and final arrival

If Belgrade is an intermediate point on one booking, Air Serbia should protect the onward journey after disruption. Measure lateness at the final city, collect the replacement itinerary and confirm baggage transfer.

Separate tickets do not usually create that protection. A traveller landing at BEG on one ticket and departing on another should leave enough time for immigration, baggage and re-check where required. Insurance or flexible fare terms may cover a missed self-transfer.

Read the Belgrade connection guide before calculating final-arrival compensation.

Baggage at BEG

For a delayed departure, ask whether checked baggage remains loaded and whether it can be returned if travel is abandoned. After cancellation, obtain written instructions before leaving the airport.

If BEG is the final destination and the bag does not arrive, file a PIR at once and keep the baggage tag. Essential-purchase claims should be reasonable and documented, with the later written demand sent within the Montreal Convention timetable.

Submit the post-travel claim

Air Serbia's claims process covers flight and baggage complaints. Prepare the PNR, ticket number, operator, timeline, legal basis, requested amounts, receipts and bank information before opening the online form.

For Serbian procedure, complain to Air Serbia within 90 days. Once the file is complete, the carrier has up to 60 days to answer before the CAD route becomes available. CAD supervises compliance but does not itself send the passenger a private payment.

Keep fixed compensation, ticket reimbursement, alternative transport and care costs in separate sections. This allows an external-cause defence to be tested without losing valid expense and transport claims.

FAQ

Is every Air Serbia disruption at BEG governed by Serbian law?

No. A one-ticket journey beginning in the EU or UK can retain the departure regime through Belgrade. BEG location alone does not replace the itinerary analysis.

Does Air Serbia owe a hotel after an overnight delay in Belgrade?

Qualifying care can include accommodation and airport-hotel transport. Request arrangements first and keep proportionate receipts if none are provided.

Can I demand EU261 for Belgrade-Paris?

Normally not when Air Serbia operates it, because the flight begins outside the EU and the carrier is Serbian. Use the Serbian passenger-rights basis.

Should I collect my checked bag after cancellation?

Ask Air Serbia or baggage staff for written instructions. Bags may be returned, held or transferred depending on the replacement and operational status.

How soon must I complain about a BEG departure?

The Serbian administrative route uses a 90-day carrier-complaint deadline. Submit a complete, traceable claim without waiting for the maximum period.
