Missed Air France connection at Paris-CDG: your rights

Short answer: if Air France sells the journey on one ticket and a delay or cancellation causes a missed connection at Paris-CDG, the airline must normally reroute the passenger to the final destination. Fixed compensation can be EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 when final arrival meets the threshold and no extraordinary defence is proved. Separate tickets usually protect only each flight on its own.

A single booking reference is useful but the ticket record is stronger. Check whether the e-ticket lists every coupon as one journey. Through-tagged baggage can support the conclusion but is not conclusive by itself.

If the booking is separate, ask Air France and the later carrier for commercial help, contact travel insurance and preserve the loss. EU261 can still apply to the delayed first flight, but it does not automatically make Air France pay for an independent onward ticket.

Final arrival controls compensation

Suppose an Air France-operated Lisbon–Paris flight reaches CDG 100 minutes late. The traveller misses the Air France connection to Montreal and arrives seven hours after the original schedule. On one ticket, the relevant delay is normally seven hours at Montreal.

The fixed amount is calculated using the covered journey and final destination, not merely the feeder sector. A long one-ticket itinerary can therefore fall into the EUR 600 band even when the first flight is below 1,500 km.

Legal arrival is generally when an aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave. Keep the replacement boarding pass and evidence of actual arrival. Air France may reduce long-haul EUR 600 to EUR 300 in defined cases where final arrival is between three and four hours late.

What Air France should do at CDG

For a protected connection, Air France should reroute the passenger at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions. Air France’s own connection guidance says the airline responsible for a late arrival that makes minimum connection time impossible will offer a rerouting solution.

Ask for:

  • a confirmed replacement itinerary to the final ticketed destination;
  • protection of later sectors and return travel on the same ticket;
  • baggage instructions and a report if the bag does not follow;
  • meals during a qualifying wait;
  • hotel and transfer if the new flight requires an overnight stay;
  • assistance for disability, reduced mobility or an unaccompanied child.

Do not accept a refund if the objective remains to travel. Selecting reimbursement can end the airline’s duty to carry the passenger under that choice.

Navigating the disruption at Paris-CDG

Check the next gate on official airport screens, Air France kiosks, the website or app. Follow current connection signs and complete passport or security controls required by the route. Do not leave the transit path merely to reach a customer-service desk unless instructed.

Record the time you entered queues and any gate-change notices. If an impossible transfer results from a late protected feeder, the connection issue belongs to the disrupted journey. If the inbound flight was on time but the passenger stopped for shopping or ignored boarding time, the analysis differs.

Paris airport signage and terminal naming are scheduled to evolve after the date of this article. Static instructions such as “always go to Terminal 2E” are unsafe. The boarding pass and live airport information take precedence.

Cause still matters for the fixed payment

Rerouting and care do not depend on Air France being at fault in the same way as fixed compensation. Severe weather or an external ATC restriction can remove the EUR 250–600 amount while the airline still transports and assists the passenger.

Ask what caused the first disruption. “Missed connection” is an outcome, not the cause. “Late incoming aircraft” also needs an underlying explanation. Ordinary technical faults, crew planning and routine rotation issues normally require more than a generic extraordinary-circumstances label.

When multiple sectors or carriers are involved, identify which operation caused the final delay. EU case law can make the operating carrier on a covered journey responsible in complex connections, but the result depends on the booking and operational links. Do not send identical claims to every airline without explaining each role.

Earliest rerouting can include partners

Air France may first offer another Air France service or a SkyTeam partner. If that arrival is materially later while a reasonable flight on another carrier has seats, ask Air France to use the earlier comparable option. Preserve screenshots of availability and the written request.

Self-book only after giving the airline a genuine opportunity where possible. If the desk is closed, the app offers a multi-day delay and urgent travel is necessary, document call attempts, chat, available options and price. Choose a reasonable route and cabin. The alternative-transport guide explains reimbursement evidence.

Care and baggage at CDG

If Air France does not provide usable meal or hotel arrangements, purchase reasonable essentials and retain itemised receipts. Accommodation does not need to be luxurious; it does need to be safe and practical for the party. Keep the transfer receipt between CDG and the hotel.

Ask whether checked baggage will be transferred automatically or held for the replacement flight. If the bag fails to arrive at the final destination, create a PIR before leaving the airport or use Air France’s permitted online reporting route. The baggage claim is separate from missed-connection compensation.

Claim after completing the journey

The claim should state:

  1. one booking and all ticketed sectors;
  2. the disrupted operating carrier;
  3. scheduled connection and minimum time shown by the itinerary;
  4. replacement offered and actual final arrival;
  5. fixed amount per passenger and separate care costs.

Attach the original and replacement boarding passes, Air France messages and receipts. If Air France examines delay only into Paris, explicitly request assessment at the final ticketed destination.

Use the Air France claim form walkthrough and retain one case reference.

FAQ

Will Air France rebook me after a missed connection at CDG?

Normally yes when the flights form one protected ticket and the first disruption causes the miss. Air France should reroute you to the final destination.

Is a shared booking reference enough to prove one ticket?

It is useful, but inspect the e-ticket coupons and issuer. Some agent displays group separate contracts, while a true through ticket records the complete journey.

Can I claim EUR 600 if the feeder was less than three hours late?

Potentially. On one booking, measure arrival at the final destination. A short feeder delay can cause a much longer long-haul arrival delay.

Does Air France owe a hotel after an ATC restriction?

Care can remain due even where external ATC action defeats fixed compensation. The wait and need for an overnight stay must satisfy the applicable rules.

What happens to my separately booked onward flight?

It is usually outside the first ticket’s protection. Ask both carriers for help, check insurance and assess the first flight’s rights independently.
