Air France alternative transport: reclaim a flight or train ticket
Short answer: if Air France cancels your flight or causes a protected connection to fail, it should reroute you to the final destination at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions. When the airline offers no timely solution, a reasonably purchased replacement flight or train can be reimbursable. Ask Air France first where practical, preserve live alternatives and buy a proportionate option rather than assuming every self-booked fare will be repaid.

This guide reflects EU261 and official guidance checked on 13 August 2026.
Establish Air France's duty first
Self-rerouting is strongest where all of these facts are documented:
- Air France cancelled, denied boarding or failed a protected connection;
- you chose rerouting rather than ticket reimbursement;
- the airline's offer was absent or materially later than a reasonable alternative;
- you asked for the workable alternative;
- Air France refused, did not respond or could not arrange it;
- the replacement was comparable and its cost proportionate.
Do not accept a full refund and then present a replacement ticket as though Air France still owed rerouting. The Article 8 remedies are alternatives, although an airline cannot necessarily extinguish its duty merely by issuing an unsolicited refund.
What earliest opportunity means
Air France should seek transport that reaches the booked final destination without avoidable delay. European Commission guidance contemplates direct or indirect carriage by another airline or another transport mode when appropriate.
The next Air France-operated flight is not automatically the legal answer. Relevant options can include:
- KLM or another partner through a different connection;
- a suitable rival airline with available seats;
- high-speed rail between Paris and a European destination;
- rail to another airport followed by a flight;
- a sensible combination arranged as one recovery plan.
Compare final arrival, not departure alone. A connection leaving sooner but arriving later may not be the better reroute.
Ask before buying
Contact Air France through an airport desk, app, chat or telephone. State the exact flight, cabin, price and arrival time you found. Ask the carrier to reissue your ticket to that option.
Take screenshots showing:
- seat availability and timestamp;
- total price, cabin and baggage;
- Air France's own offered itinerary;
- your request and response;
- urgency, such as a closing connection or lack of hotel capacity.
Where desks are closed, queues are unmanageable and fares are rising, waiting indefinitely may not be reasonable. Document the circumstances before acting.
Comparable conditions
A replacement need not reproduce every detail, but it should be reasonably comparable. An Economy passenger who buys a last-minute Business fare while Economy seats remain available risks a reduction or refusal. A Business passenger should ask for comparable premium carriage, although accepting Economy to arrive much earlier may create a separate downgrade question if Air France arranges it.
Consider baggage allowance, accessibility, travelling children and airport location. A low headline fare that excludes required baggage or departs from a distant airport may not be genuinely comparable.
Replacement flights
Keep the new e-ticket receipt, payment evidence, boarding pass and proof of actual arrival. Show that the fare was available when Air France failed to reroute, not merely a later historical search.
If you purchase only one sector, explain how it fits the original journey. Avoid abandoning remaining coupons without informing Air France because automated no-show rules can cancel later flights. Ask the airline to protect the return or onward booking.
For a family, select a route with seats for the whole party where separation is unreasonable. Explain why the chosen fare was the lowest practical group solution.
Rail as rerouting
Rail can be a sensible alternative on routes from Paris to cities served efficiently by train. Keep the rail ticket, seat reservation, station-transfer cost and timing. Ask whether Air France will issue or endorse the rail journey first.
The reimbursement argument is strongest when rail arrives substantially earlier than the airline's option and avoids an unnecessary overnight stay. First-class rail for an Economy air passenger requires justification if standard class was available and suitable.
If rail terminates somewhere other than the booked destination, include the reasonable final connection. A weekend visit ending at the wrong city is not complete rerouting.
Airport and ground-transfer costs
A replacement from Paris-Orly after cancellation at CDG can require transport between airports. Ask Air France to arrange or cover it. Preserve the route and receipt.
Ground transport from a diverted nearby airport to the booked airport has its own EU261 rule. Do not count the same taxi both as diversion transfer and replacement-travel cost.
How much can be reimbursed
EU261 does not set a flat amount for self-rerouting. The claim concerns the reasonable actual cost caused by Air France's failure to provide required carriage. Air France may account for ticket value already refunded or unused, preventing duplicate repayment.
Example: Air France cancels a flight, offers arrival two days later and refuses a documented same-day Economy seat on another carrier. The passenger buys that reasonable seat. The claim should show the new cost, the unused original ticket treatment and the request Air France rejected.
Do not add a speculative inconvenience amount to the replacement fare. EUR 250-600 fixed compensation is calculated separately.
Fixed compensation and care can coexist
Self-rerouting does not eliminate Article 7 compensation where the disruption otherwise qualifies. Likewise, meals or a hotel needed while waiting may remain care costs.
Submit distinct lines for:
| Claim | Evidence |
|---|---|
| replacement transport | receipt, route, request and refusal |
| fixed compensation | distance, final delay, notice and cause |
| care | itemised meals, room and transfers |
| unused paid option | service receipt and non-delivery |
Clear separation helps Air France assess each legal basis without offsetting unrelated amounts.
Travel agents and package holidays
If an agent issued the ticket, Air France may tell you to contact it for voluntary servicing. During an operating-carrier cancellation, EU261 rerouting duties still matter. Notify both Air France and the agent and preserve each response.
For a package, the organiser may have additional duties to solve the trip as a whole. Do not recover the same replacement expense twice from airline, organiser and insurer. Tell each party about payments received.
Submit a persuasive expense request
Write a short chronology: original flight, cancellation time, Air France offer, alternative requested, refusal or absence of help, purchase and final arrival. Attach original and replacement tickets, timestamped screenshots, correspondence and payment proof.
State why the choice was necessary and comparable. If Air France rejects it without addressing the evidence, use the Air France refusal guide to seek a reasoned review.

FAQ
Can I buy another airline's flight after Air France cancels?
Potentially, when it is a reasonable earliest rerouting and Air France fails to arrange it. Request the option first and preserve availability and refusal.
Will Air France repay any replacement fare I choose?
No. The cost and conditions must be proportionate. Cabin, timing, route, party needs and available alternatives all matter.
Can a train replace a cancelled Air France flight?
Yes, rail can be appropriate rerouting where it reaches the final destination effectively. Ask Air France to arrange it and keep the complete journey evidence.
What if Air France already refunded my ticket?
An unsolicited refund does not necessarily answer a prior rerouting request, but Air France can account for returned fare value. Explain the sequence and avoid double recovery.
Is the replacement ticket additional to EUR 600?
It can be. Reimbursement of required alternative transport and fixed compensation serve different purposes and have separate conditions.
