Air France diverted flight: final arrival, transport and claims
Short answer: an Air France flight landing at a different airport is not automatically a cancellation and does not automatically create compensation. Measure when you reached the airport originally booked, or another nearby destination agreed with Air France, then test the cause. The airline should arrange or reimburse transfer from the substitute airport where EU261 requires it. A final arrival of three hours or more can qualify for EUR 250-600 unless Air France proves extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures.

Record the diversion before leaving
Do not end your evidence trail when the aircraft touches down. Save:
- the original booking and boarding pass;
- the actual airport and touchdown time;
- the time the aircraft doors opened;
- Air France announcements about onward transport;
- bus, rail, taxi and hotel receipts;
- the time you reached the booked airport or agreed destination;
- baggage collection and transfer instructions.
An aircraft can land on time at the substitute airport while the passenger reaches the booked destination hours later. That ground journey is central to the arrival calculation.
Nearby airport diversions
In Austrian Airlines v Landkreis Salzburg (C-826/19), the Court of Justice explained how EU261 applies where a flight is diverted to an airport serving the same town, city or region. Such a diversion is not, by itself, cancellation. The airline must offer to bear the cost of transferring the passenger to the airport for which the booking was made or, by agreement, another nearby destination.
For delay compensation, arrival is assessed when the passenger reaches that booked airport or agreed place. If Air France offers a coach that reaches the intended airport four hours after scheduled arrival, the fact that the aircraft landed earlier elsewhere does not end the calculation.
Whether airports serve the same city or region is factual. Beauvais, Orly and Charles de Gaulle should not simply be treated as interchangeable because all are marketed to Paris travellers. Ask Air France to state its transfer arrangement rather than assuming the legal category.
Diversion to a remote airport
If the substitute airport does not serve the same town, city or region, the outcome may be closer to non-performance of the original transport. The precise remedy depends on what happened next: the aircraft may refuel and continue, Air France may carry passengers by road, or the journey may terminate away from the booked destination.
Write down what the crew and ground staff said. If Air France abandons onward carriage, request rerouting to the final destination. Do not sign or click a voluntary journey termination without understanding whether it changes the airline's position.
The cause decides fixed compensation
A diversion is an operational outcome, not a legal cause. Common causes include:
| Underlying event | Initial assessment |
|---|---|
| ordinary aircraft fault | generally inherent in airline activity |
| severe destination weather | can be extraordinary |
| airport or runway closure | can be extraordinary |
| medical emergency on board | commonly external, facts matter |
| crew or fuel planning issue | generally operational |
| security threat | can be extraordinary |
Air France must prove the event, causal link and reasonable measures if it refuses fixed compensation. "Diversion for operational reasons" gives no meaningful detail. Ask where and when the event arose, why the booked airport could not be used and why the proposed recovery was reasonable.
Calculate the final delay
On a direct flight, compare scheduled arrival at the booked airport with actual arrival there or at the agreed nearby destination. On a protected connection, use the final destination on the same reservation.
Example: an Air France flight is booked to CDG but lands at another regional airport. Ground transport reaches CDG three hours and twenty minutes after scheduled arrival. If EU261 covers the journey and Air France cannot prove an extraordinary defence, the delay threshold is met.
If a diversion causes a missed onward Air France connection and passengers arrive the next day, use that final arrival. The CDG connection guide explains the one-booking test.
EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600
Where the conditions are satisfied, the distance categories are:
| Covered route | Payment per passenger |
|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| intra-EU over 1,500 km, or another flight of 1,500-3,500 km | EUR 400 |
| another flight over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
Certain long-haul delays between three and four hours allow a 50% reduction. The ticket price does not set the amount. Connected distance is assessed under the applicable EU rules, not by adding unrelated separate tickets.
Ground transport costs
First ask Air France to arrange transfer. Take a screenshot or note the desk response. If no workable transport is provided, use a reasonable option and retain an itemised receipt.
A private taxi may be proportionate late at night where there is no public service, especially when shared among passengers. It is harder to justify where a free coach was ready and reached the booked airport promptly. Explain the available alternatives, urgency and group size in the expense request.
Transfer reimbursement is separate from fixed compensation. Claim each item under the correct heading and do not combine a taxi receipt into the EUR 250-600 calculation.
Care during the wait
Meals, communication, hotel and hotel transfer can be due according to waiting time, even where weather or another extraordinary event caused the diversion. Air France should provide effective assistance; a theoretical voucher that cannot be used may not resolve the duty.
Keep purchases modest and connected to the disruption. If the diversion creates an overnight stay but Air France tells passengers to arrange rooms themselves, preserve that instruction and evidence of local prices.
Baggage after a diversion
Confirm whether checked bags will travel by road, remain on the aircraft or be delivered later. If your bag does not arrive with you, obtain a Property Irregularity Report and use the baggage process. A delayed-baggage expense claim arises under a different legal framework from EU261.
Do not let a diversion claim expire while waiting for baggage resolution. Keep separate references where Air France assigns them.
Replacement travel and self-purchase
If Air France cannot complete the journey within a reasonable time, ask for rerouting at the earliest opportunity. Suitable carriage can involve another flight or rail where comparable and practical. Record available options and the airline's answer before self-purchase.
When urgent circumstances require you to act, choose a proportionate route to the booked destination and explain why waiting was unreasonable. A business-class replacement for an economy booking will need strong justification if economy alternatives existed.
Submit a structured claim
Present the facts in chronological order: booked destination, substitute airport, door-opening time, Air France's transfer offer, ground departure and final arrival. State the underlying reason Air France gave. Request separately:
- fixed compensation, if the final delay and cause qualify;
- ground transfer reimbursement;
- care expenses;
- any baggage-related loss under the relevant process.
Use the Air France claim form guide to select evidence and avoid duplicate submissions.

FAQ
Is every Air France diversion treated as a cancellation?
No. A diversion to an airport serving the same town, city or region is not cancellation merely because the landing point changed, although transfer and delay rights apply.
When does the arrival clock stop after a nearby-airport diversion?
It stops when you reach the airport originally booked or another nearby destination agreed with Air France, not necessarily when the aircraft doors open elsewhere.
Must Air France pay for a taxi?
Air France must offer to bear required transfer costs. A taxi reimbursement depends on whether it was a reasonable response to the absence or inadequacy of airline transport.
Does bad weather remove the right to a hotel?
No. Extraordinary weather may remove fixed compensation, but reasonable care can still be due during the disruption.
What if the diversion makes me miss a connection?
On one protected booking, assess the arrival at the ticketed final destination and require rerouting. Separate tickets usually create separate transport contracts.
