Air France cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation

Short answer: when Air France cancels a covered flight, the passenger normally chooses a refund or rerouting. Fixed compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 may be additional when notice was short and Air France cannot prove extraordinary circumstances plus reasonable measures. A refund, replacement journey, care and fixed payment answer different losses.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

This guide reflects the position checked on 13 August 2026. It addresses cancellations by Air France, not a passenger’s voluntary decision to cancel a booking.

Confirm that the flight was cancelled

A service is clearly cancelled when it does not operate and passengers are moved to another flight. A major restructuring can also matter even if Air France describes it as a schedule change. Indicators include a new flight number, movement to another day, a changed origin or destination, or an itinerary that no longer resembles the purchased service.

Save the first notice, the original e-ticket and every replacement offered. The notification time controls the 14-day test. An app may replace the original itinerary, so screenshots taken before accepting a change are valuable.

For US itineraries, a renumbering has a specific and currently evolving DOT treatment. In July 2026, DOT extended enforcement discretion for some successfully rebooked renumbered flights. That US issue does not rewrite the EU261 cancellation analysis. The US Air France guide separates the systems.

Your first decision: travel or money back

EU261 requires a meaningful choice after cancellation:

Passenger’s objectiveRemedy to request
Reach the destination as soon as possiblererouting at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions
Travel laterrerouting on a convenient later date, subject to availability
Abandon the tripreimbursement of the unused ticket
Journey already started but now pointlessreimbursement under the conditions plus return to the first departure point

Air France should not force a voucher where a monetary ticket refund is due. Nor should accepting rerouting be treated as a general waiver of fixed compensation. Record the option selected and any deadline Air France imposes for responding to an alternative itinerary.

“Comparable transport conditions” concerns the practical journey and cabin purchased. It does not guarantee the same flight number or aircraft. If Air France’s own replacement is much later while a reasonable partner or competing flight is available, ask the airline in writing to reroute you on that option. The separate rerouting guide explains when another carrier or rail can be relevant.

When fixed compensation may also be due

The cancellation payment depends on notice and replacement timings.

Notice at least 14 days before departure

Fixed EU261 compensation is normally not due. Refund or rerouting remains due because Air France cancelled the service.

Notice from seven to 14 days

Air France can avoid the fixed payment if it offers rerouting that leaves no more than two hours before the original departure and reaches the final destination less than four hours late.

Notice less than seven days

The exemption is narrower: the replacement must leave no more than one hour early and arrive less than two hours late.

These windows are not a substitute for the extraordinary-circumstances defence. A cancellation can avoid compensation because notice was sufficient, because the replacement met the statutory window, or because Air France proves an extraordinary cause and reasonable measures.

Amounts and connected journeys

EU261 categoryStandard amount per eligible passenger
Up to 1,500 kmEUR 250
Intra-EU above 1,500 kmEUR 400
Other journey from 1,500 to 3,500 kmEUR 400
Other journey over 3,500 kmEUR 600

For a one-ticket journey, assess the final destination affected by the cancellation. If an Air France feeder cancellation breaks a Paris connection and the family reaches São Paulo the next day, the complete booking can matter. If the later flight sits on a separate ticket, its cost is not automatically part of the cancelled contract.

Replacement arrival within the Article 7 reduction windows can halve the fixed amount. Keep proof of actual arrival rather than relying only on the proposed schedule.

Extraordinary cause does not end the analysis

Severe weather, an airport closure, air-traffic restrictions or an external security event may qualify as extraordinary. Air France must still show a causal link to the cancelled flight and reasonable measures. An ordinary technical problem, lack of crew or commercial consolidation is not made extraordinary by calling it “operational.”

Even a proven extraordinary event does not ordinarily remove:

  • the choice between refund and rerouting;
  • reasonable meals and refreshments while waiting;
  • hotel accommodation where an overnight stay becomes necessary;
  • transport between the airport and accommodation;
  • communication assistance under the applicable rules.

If Air France does not provide effective care, buy only what is reasonably necessary and preserve itemised receipts. Weather can defeat EUR 600 while leaving a valid hotel claim.

Self-booking replacement transport

Ask Air France to reroute first and capture the response. If the airline refuses, offers a journey substantially later despite reasonable alternatives, or is unreachable during an urgent disruption, a self-booked flight or train may be recoverable. The passenger must mitigate cost and show why the purchase was necessary.

Useful evidence includes screenshots of available alternatives, chat transcripts, call logs, the refused request, the replacement receipt and proof the transport was used. Avoid an unnecessary premium cabin or circuitous itinerary unless accessibility, safety or lack of alternatives explains it.

Do not claim both full reimbursement of the abandoned Air France ticket and the same transport value twice. State exactly which original coupons remained unused and which replacement expense is sought.

Submit separate claim lines

An effective cancellation request contains:

  1. booking reference, ticket number and operating carrier;
  2. original flight and final destination;
  3. date and time the cancellation notice was received;
  4. replacement proposed, accepted or rejected;
  5. fixed amount per passenger and separate expense schedule.

Attach the original itinerary, cancellation message, replacement boarding passes and receipts. If an OTA issued the ticket, identify both the Air France reservation and the ticket seller. EU261 compensation normally concerns the operating carrier, while the payment flow for a ticket refund may involve the issuing agent.

Air France’s claim page allows submission and tracking. Keep one case reference for the event and add information to it rather than creating competing files. If Air France offers a non-refundable enhanced compensation voucher, compare it with statutory money before accepting.

What a useful refusal response should address

If Air France rejects the fixed payment, request:

  • the exact extraordinary event;
  • when it began and ended;
  • how it affected this aircraft or crew rotation;
  • which preventive and rerouting measures were considered;
  • the legal reason for refusing each separate remedy.

A response about compensation does not automatically answer a pending refund or hotel request. The rejected-claim guide provides a structured reply and escalation map.

FAQ

Must I accept the Air France replacement flight?

No. After a covered cancellation, you normally choose reimbursement or rerouting. If you still need to travel, compare the offered arrival with available reasonable alternatives before deciding.

Does 14 days’ notice remove every right?

No. It usually removes fixed cancellation compensation, but Air France must still offer refund or rerouting because it cancelled the flight.

Can I receive compensation after accepting rerouting?

Yes. Rerouting does not itself waive the fixed payment. Notice, cause and the replacement’s departure and arrival timings still determine the amount.

What if French air-traffic control caused the cancellation?

External ATC action may be extraordinary, subject to proof. Refund or rerouting and care remain separate obligations even if fixed compensation is unavailable.

Can an OTA force me to take a voucher?

An agent cannot remove a statutory monetary refund owed after an airline cancellation. The practical refund channel may run through the ticket issuer, so preserve both the agent’s and Air France’s responses.
