Air France rerouting: SkyTeam, another airline or rail

Short answer: after a covered Air France cancellation or denied boarding, a passenger who still wants to travel can choose rerouting at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions. Air France may use its own flights or SkyTeam partners, but alliance membership is not the legal limit. A reasonable competing airline or rail option can matter when it reaches the final destination substantially earlier.

This guide reflects EU, UK and Air France guidance checked on 13 August 2026. Availability must be documented at the time of disruption.

Choose rerouting rather than refund

The passenger generally chooses among reimbursement, earliest rerouting or later rerouting at a convenient date subject to availability. These remedies are alternatives for the same ticket.

Passenger’s needRequest to make
Travel as soon as possibleearliest comparable rerouting
Travel on a later chosen datelater rerouting, subject to seats
No longer travelticket reimbursement

Do not click “refund” if the objective is to make Air France carry the passenger. Once reimbursement is chosen and paid, demanding the same journey can become inconsistent.

SkyTeam is useful, not exclusive

Air France can often reroute through KLM, Delta or another partner because commercial arrangements make ticketing easier. A partner option can be excellent, but EU261 does not say rerouting is limited to an alliance.

If another suitable airline reaches the final destination many hours or a day earlier, show Air France the option and request rebooking. UK CAA cancellation guidance expressly recognises that another airline or suitable mode of transport may be appropriate when significantly sooner.

Preserve screenshots with date, time, cabin and availability. A search result that disappears before booking is weaker than a confirmed fare display.

Comparable transport conditions

Comparable does not require the same aircraft, flight number or exact departure minute. It does require a practical journey that respects the purchased class and passenger’s circumstances.

Consider:

  • cabin and material downgrade;
  • total arrival time and number of connections;
  • airport changes and included transfer;
  • baggage allowance and through handling;
  • transit visas and entry rules;
  • disability or reduced-mobility needs;
  • travelling children and unaccompanied minors;
  • medical equipment or animals accepted for carriage.

A reroute through a country the passenger cannot transit is not useful. Tell Air France about restrictions before accepting.

Another Paris airport or nearby destination

Air France can offer a different airport serving the same city or region. EU261 requires the carrier to bear transfer cost between the alternative airport and the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with the passenger.

CDG and Orly are distinct airports. A move can require substantial ground time and cost. Ask who arranges transport, how baggage moves and whether the onward connection remains protected.

Do not treat the ground leg as free passenger time when calculating final arrival. A diversion or airport substitution can continue until the passenger reaches the booked or agreed destination.

Rail can be a sensible alternative

For short and medium journeys from Paris, high-speed rail may arrive earlier than a replacement flight. Air France also sells combined air-and-rail products, but a disruption reroute is not limited to those pre-existing products.

Ask Air France to issue or authorise the rail ticket and clarify baggage. If the passenger buys rail after Air France fails to arrange reasonable transport, keep the request, refusal, timetable, ticket and proof of use.

Rail should solve the cancelled journey, not add an unrelated city visit. Compare door-to-door arrival and accessibility.

When self-booking becomes defensible

Self-booking carries evidence risk. Give Air France a genuine opportunity where possible. It becomes stronger when:

  • Air France refuses an available lawful alternative;
  • the app and desk offer only a materially later arrival;
  • no representative can be reached during an urgent disruption;
  • the replacement is proportionate in route, cabin and price;
  • the passenger documents mitigation.

Keep call logs, chat, queue photos, screenshots of alternatives and the final receipt. A business-class purchase to replace an Economy ticket needs a compelling lack-of-alternatives explanation.

The replacement-flight and train cost guide focuses on reimbursement after self-booking.

Fixed compensation remains separate

Accepting a SkyTeam or competitor reroute does not generally waive EU261 compensation. The replacement’s actual arrival can affect the amount, including the 50 percent reduction windows.

Record when the rerouted journey actually reached the final destination. If the new carrier causes an additional independent delay, identify that operator and event separately.

Air France’s enhanced compensation voucher is also a different choice. It concerns the form of fixed payment, not the transport needed to finish the journey.

Care during rerouting

Air France must provide qualifying meals, hotel and transfer while the passenger waits for earliest rerouting. Extraordinary weather or ATC restrictions do not automatically remove care.

If Air France sends the passenger to another airport, ask for ground transport. If the reroute departs the next day, request accommodation appropriate to the party. Purchase reasonable care only when effective assistance is absent and keep itemised receipts.

Protect all ticket sectors

Confirm that Air France has not cancelled the return or later coupons as a no-show consequence. Ask for a reissued ticket or written protection of the complete itinerary.

For checked baggage, determine whether it follows automatically, must be collected or needs re-tagging. A new operator may have a different allowance, but involuntary rerouting should not create an unexplained charge for equivalent baggage.

Save both the original ticket and reissue. They prove the intended final destination and replacement arrangements.

A practical request at the airport

State:

I choose rerouting at the earliest opportunity under Article 8. The offered itinerary arrives at [time]. A comparable option on [carrier/train] currently arrives at [earlier time] and has availability. Please rebook me and confirm baggage and any airport transfer.

If refused, ask for the reason in writing. Remain polite and do not obstruct airport operations.

FAQ

Must Air France reroute me only on SkyTeam?

No. SkyTeam can make rebooking practical, but the legal standard is earliest comparable rerouting, not alliance exclusivity.

Can I ask for a train instead of a flight?

Yes, where rail is a suitable way to reach the destination. Ask Air France to arrange it and preserve evidence if self-purchase becomes necessary.

Who pays transfer from Orly to CDG?

When Air France reroutes to a different airport serving the same region under EU261, it should bear transfer to the booked airport or another agreed nearby destination.

Does accepting rerouting remove EUR 600 compensation?

No automatic waiver follows. Actual replacement arrival can reduce the fixed amount in defined cases, while cause and notice still matter.

Can I buy another airline’s ticket myself?

Potentially, if Air France fails to provide timely lawful rerouting. Document the request, available options, urgency, reasonableness and use of the ticket.
