Air Canada cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
Short answer: after Air Canada cancels a flight, choose between a refund and replacement transport before calculating compensation. A covered EU departure can produce up to EUR 600; a covered UK departure can produce up to GBP 520; APPR can provide up to CAD 1,000 when its control and timing tests are met. Meals, hotel, transfers and a replacement ticket are separate claims.

This guide reflects the rules and official guidance checked on 19 September 2026.
The first decision is whether the trip still has value
| Passenger's position | Practical request |
|---|---|
| The event or meeting can no longer be reached | refund of unused travel and any required return to origin |
| The passenger still needs to arrive | rerouting at the earliest reasonable opportunity |
| A later trip remains useful | later rerouting where the governing rule permits it |
| Air Canada offers only a travel credit | ask whether money is available before accepting a voluntary alternative |
Do not accept a voucher merely because it appears faster. Under EU261 and UK261, reimbursement is generally due in money unless the passenger freely agrees to another form. Canadian guidance also requires clear conditions before an alternative form replaces the original payment method.
Direction determines whether EU261 or UK261 joins APPR
An Air Canada cancellation from Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt, Lisbon or another EU/EEA/Swiss airport can fall under EU261. An Air Canada cancellation from London or another UK airport can fall under UK261. An Air Canada-operated cancellation from Toronto or Montreal to Europe normally does not enter those systems because Air Canada is neither an EU nor UK carrier.
APPR applies to flights to, from and within Canada. The airline's duties then depend on whether the cancellation was:
- within Air Canada's control and not required for safety;
- within its control but required for safety; or
- outside its control.
The coverage guide gives a route-by-route decision method.
EU and UK cancellation notice tests
For current EU261, fixed cancellation compensation normally falls away when the passenger was informed at least 14 days before departure. With shorter notice, replacement timings matter.
| Notice | Fixed compensation can be avoided when the replacement stays within these limits |
|---|---|
| 7 to under 14 days | departure no more than 2 hours early and arrival under 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | departure no more than 1 hour early and arrival under 2 hours late |
The UK system follows the retained framework with its own GBP amounts. These exceptions affect fixed compensation, not the basic refund-or-rerouting choice.
The airline can also resist fixed compensation if it proves extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. It should identify the actual event and causal chain. A generic reference to weather elsewhere in the network is not automatically enough.
APPR looks at control and final arrival
For a large carrier such as Air Canada, current APPR compensation for a controllable cancellation not required for safety is CAD 400, CAD 700 or CAD 1,000 according to final-arrival delay. If the passenger takes a refund because the alternative no longer meets the travel need, the applicable APPR compensation for inconvenience may be CAD 400 under the conditions in the regulation.
APPR also sets rerouting obligations. Canadian guidance says a large airline dealing with a controllable cancellation must look beyond its own flights if it cannot provide a suitable departure within the specified window. For events outside control, the initial window and partner-flight duties differ, but the obligation does not reduce to “wait for our next seasonal service.”
Do not assume that APPR's safety category is identical to EU261 extraordinary circumstances. Test each law separately.
Earliest rerouting can include another airline
On a covered EU or UK cancellation, the passenger can ask for transport to the final destination at the earliest opportunity in comparable conditions. If Air Canada offers a flight two days later while a reasonable partner or other carrier can travel much sooner, document the alternative and request it in writing before buying it yourself.
Self-purchase carries evidence risk. Save:
- the cancellation message;
- the replacement Air Canada offered;
- screenshots of earlier reasonable alternatives;
- the written request for rerouting;
- Air Canada's refusal or failure to answer;
- the receipt and boarding proof for the replacement actually used.
Do not buy an implausibly expensive premium ticket when a reasonable economy option exists. The claim is stronger when the choice solves the same transport need proportionately.
Care continues while rerouting is pending
For a qualifying covered departure, care can include food, communication, hotel accommodation and transfers. Extraordinary circumstances do not automatically remove EU or UK care. Under APPR, assistance depends on the control category and notice, while rebooking or refund duties can extend further.
Ask Air Canada to provide assistance first. If airport staff or digital support cannot do so, keep itemised receipts and a record of the request. Separate care from fixed compensation in the claim form.
The refund and care guide contains a document checklist for these costs.
One booking changes a cancelled connection
A passenger holds Barcelona-Toronto-Halifax on one Air Canada ticket. If the Toronto-Halifax sector is cancelled, rerouting should address Halifax, not merely Toronto. For EU261, the effect on the complete journey can matter because the itinerary began in the EU. APPR also applies to the connected Canadian journey.
If Toronto-Halifax was bought on a separate ticket, the first contract may not protect that onward flight. Travel insurance or the second ticket's conditions may become important.
What to write in the cancellation claim
Open with a compact factual record:
- passenger names and booking reference;
- full itinerary and final destination;
- operating carrier for every relevant sector;
- scheduled flight and cancellation-notice times;
- replacement offered and actual arrival;
- stated reason for cancellation;
- chosen remedy: refund or rerouting;
- fixed compensation requested under the applicable rule;
- care and replacement costs, each supported by a receipt.
Avoid writing only “I want a full refund and compensation.” Air Canada needs to be able to identify the ticket remedy, statutory payment and expenses as different requests.
Worked examples
Frankfurt to Toronto cancelled the day before
Air Canada cancels for an ordinary crew-rotation problem and offers arrival the next evening. The EU departure, short notice and controllable cause can support EUR 600 per passenger, plus rerouting and reasonable care. APPR can also be relevant, but duplicate inconvenience payment should not be claimed.
Toronto to Frankfurt cancelled
Air Canada cancels a Canada-origin flight for a controllable non-safety reason and the passenger arrives ten hours late. EU261 normally does not cover that direction on Air Canada. APPR can support up to CAD 1,000, subject to the full conditions.
Cancellation caused by airport closure
Fixed compensation may fail if the closure genuinely caused the cancellation and reasonable measures could not avoid it. Refund or rerouting remains central, and care must be checked under the applicable regime.
FAQ
Must I accept an Air Canada voucher after cancellation?
No. Ask what cash refund or rerouting right applies before voluntarily accepting credit. Keep the offer and your response in writing.
Can I choose a refund and still claim compensation?
Potentially yes. The ticket refund and fixed compensation address different matters, although each regime has its own eligibility conditions.
Does 14 days of notice remove every Air Canada obligation?
No. It can remove EU or UK fixed cancellation compensation, but refund, rerouting and other duties can remain.
Can I buy another airline's flight?
Sometimes, but first ask Air Canada for the earliest reasonable rerouting and preserve the response. A proportionate self-purchase is easier to recover when the airline failed to provide a required solution.
Does APPR pay CAD 1,000 for every Air Canada cancellation?
No. The amount depends on final-arrival delay and a cancellation within airline control that was not required for safety, plus the other APPR conditions.
Who handles a cancellation on an Air Canada codeshare?
The operating carrier normally handles statutory disruption duties. The ticket issuer or agency may still be involved in processing a fare refund.
