Aeromexico delayed, lost or damaged baggage claim
An Aeromexico baggage claim is not calculated at EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. Those are flight-disruption bands under EU261, while delayed, lost or damaged baggage is primarily a Montreal Convention claim based on reporting, proof and actual loss, subject to the Convention's conditions and liability limit. Start the record at the airport and follow with a timely written demand.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The baggage route is largely independent of whether EU261 covers the flight direction. This guide states the position at 9 September 2026. The July 2026 EU reform has deferred application; its future nine-month flight-claim period is neither current law nor a replacement for Montreal baggage deadlines.
Report the problem before leaving the airport
Go to Aeromexico's or the handling agent's baggage desk and obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Check that the passenger name, flight, bag-tag number, contact details and description are correct. Photograph the report and damaged bag, including wheels, handles and contents where relevant.
A PIR starts tracing and creates contemporaneous evidence, but it is not always the final financial claim. Preserve the reference and follow Aeromexico's baggage channel with a written demand. If the desk is closed, document that and report through the official route promptly.
Delayed baggage: buy only what is reasonably needed
Keep the bag tag, PIR, delivery messages and the date and time the bag is returned. During the delay, retain itemised receipts for reasonable essentials suited to the location and trip. A visitor arriving in Cancún without clothing may reasonably need basic replacements; a passenger delayed on the return home may have a narrower immediate loss.
Explain each purchase rather than sending a bank statement alone. Expensive or unrelated items invite dispute. If travel insurance pays part, disclose it and claim no duplicate recovery.
Lost baggage: prove contents and value
A bag is not priced by a flat passenger award. Prepare an inventory with item description, age, original price, available receipts and reasonable current value. Photographs, purchase records and prior travel images can support ownership. Depreciation and proof may affect valuation.
Retain the ticket and checked-baggage tag linking the suitcase to the journey. If Aeromexico declares the bag lost, save that communication. Keep interim essentials separate from the final contents schedule so the airline can see how the total was built.
Damaged baggage: preserve it for inspection
Photograph damage immediately and from several angles. Do not discard or repair the suitcase before Aeromexico has a fair opportunity to inspect or instruct you, unless safety or mitigation requires action. Keep any repair estimate, invoice and evidence of the bag's age and condition.
Ordinary wear is different from functional damage. Describe what no longer works and when it was noticed. Montreal requires written complaint within short periods; passengers should consult the Convention and current Aeromexico instructions rather than wait for a general customer-service exchange.
Worked example after a Mexico City connection
Harriet travels London–Mexico City–Oaxaca on one Aeromexico ticket. Her suitcase does not arrive in Oaxaca. She obtains a PIR, keeps her tag and buys toiletries, two basic outfits and medication supplies during a three-day delay. She photographs each receipt and the delivery record.
Her baggage demand lists necessary purchases at actual cost and explains why each was needed away from home. Separately, she documents the London departure and final arrival for any UK261 missed-connection claim. The two files share itinerary evidence but not arithmetic: baggage loss is not multiplied by a UK fixed-compensation band, and meals during a flight wait are not disguised as suitcase contents.
Operating and contracting carriers can both matter.
Codeshares and successive carriage can complicate the recipient. Keep the complete ticket and identify who actually carried the bag on each sector, as well as the contracting airline. An AM marketing code alone may not show the physical operator. Aeromexico's tracing record is valuable even if another partner handled the final sector.
Direction determines EU261 flight rights but does not erase Montreal protection. An Aeromexico-operated Mexico-to-Europe flight may fall outside EU261 while still producing a valid Montreal baggage claim. Conversely, a covered EU departure does not turn suitcase damage into automatic EUR 600 compensation.
Send a complete written baggage demand.
Include passenger and booking details, flight sectors, bag tag, PIR, delivery or loss status, photographs, inventory and numbered receipts. State the currency and total, subtract payments already received and preserve proof of submission. Do not send sensitive bank details outside an official secure field.
Package organisers and insurers may have parallel obligations, but notify each under the correct contract and avoid double payment. Refund or rerouting for a cancelled flight, care expenses during the wait, fixed flight compensation and baggage damages should remain separate schedules.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PIR itself my compensation claim?
Usually it is the initial incident and tracing record. Follow it with the required timely written financial demand and evidence.
How much does Aeromexico pay for a lost bag?
There is no automatic EU261 band. Payment depends on proven loss under Montreal, subject to defences and the applicable liability limit.
Can I replace everything during a baggage delay?
Claim reasonable necessities appropriate to the circumstances. Keep itemised receipts and explain the need for each purchase.
Does direction matter for baggage claims?
Not in the same way as EU261. A Mexico-origin AM flight may lack EU261 coverage while Montreal baggage protection still applies.
Does the future nine-month EU rule govern baggage?
No. It is not currently applicable and does not replace Montreal's specific written-complaint requirements.
