Aeromexico codeshare: identify the operating carrier

Published: 10 September 2026

The airline name beside the flight number is not always the airline responsible for operating it. Aeromexico sells codeshares with alliance partners, so an AM code may identify the marketing arrangement while the “operated by” line identifies the carrier physically due to perform the sector. That distinction can decide whom to claim against and whether a Mexico-origin flight reaches EU261 or UK261.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Aeromexico itself is Mexican, not an EU or UK carrier. Its own European departures can be covered, but its own Mexico-to-Europe services normally cannot. This guide states the law at 9 September 2026. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 has deferred application; its future nine-month claim period is not current.

Find the operator in the original documents

Check the e-ticket receipt, booking confirmation and boarding pass for “operated by.” Save the aircraft operator shown before disruption, not only the partner used for rerouting. Ticket stock, loyalty credit, an AM flight number and the website that took payment do not by themselves identify the operating carrier.

If documents conflict, keep every version and ask Aeromexico to confirm which licensed airline was due to operate the sector. Aircraft livery can help explain events but is not as reliable as the contractual record, especially with leases and substitutions.

Why operator status changes inbound coverage

An Aeromexico-operated Madrid–Mexico City departure can enter EU261 because it starts in the EU. The reverse AM-operated Mexico City–Madrid flight normally falls outside because it starts in Mexico and Aeromexico is non-EU. A codeshare marketed as AM but actually operated by an EU carrier requires a new assessment: that carrier's status may bring the inbound sector within EU261.

Britain has a separate UK261 test. A British departure operated by Aeromexico can qualify; a Mexico-origin arrival operated by Aeromexico normally cannot. Do not infer the result from the destination alone.

Match the operator to the disrupted sector

On a multi-sector journey, write an operator beside every coupon. The airline operating Paris–Mexico City may differ from the airline operating Mexico City–Guadalajara. The carrier connected to the cancelled or delayed sector is central, while final-arrival analysis can still depend on the structure of one through booking.

When Aeromexico reroutes the passenger onto KLM or Air France, the replacement carrier does not automatically become responsible for the original cancellation. Preserve the planned operator and the replacement operator as different facts.

Worked example with an AM marketing code

Elena books Mexico City–Paris under an AM flight number. Her original confirmation says “operated by Air France.” The flight is cancelled and she is rerouted the next day. Because the operating carrier is an EU carrier, the Mexico-origin direction requires analysis different from an Aeromexico-operated inbound service.

Elena attaches the original operated-by line, not merely the AM number. She keeps the cancellation notice, new boarding pass, actual arrival and receipts. Fixed compensation, if the legal tests are met, is calculated separately from rerouting and care. If Aeromexico had physically operated the same Mexico-origin route, arrival in Paris alone would not create EU261 coverage.

Keep seller, organiser and carrier roles apart

A travel agency sells or services the reservation. A package organiser may answer for the package and lost holiday services. The operating airline performs the flight and is central to EU261 or UK261. Aeromexico's customer channels may help identify the record, but the statutory claim must follow the evidence.

Baggage liability under Montreal can involve the contracting and actual carrier framework and requires its own proof. Do not assume that identifying an EU operator converts bag damage into a EUR 600 flight-compensation claim.

Prepare a clean operator-led claim.

Begin with the route, date, ticket number, marketing number and exact “operated by” wording. Add the original and replacement itineraries. Explain the direction of travel before quoting EU261 or UK261. Then prove delay, cancellation notice or denied boarding and address the stated cause.

Separate flat compensation from unused-fare reimbursement, alternative transport and care receipts. If an airline rejects the case because it did not operate the sector, request confirmation and redirect the claim without losing the original filing record. Escalation should follow the covered departure and correct defendant.

Where a family travelled together, identify the operator once for the shared itinerary but list every passenger and ticket number. This prevents a correct carrier analysis from producing an incomplete payment request and keeps individual statutory sums distinct from jointly incurred costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AM flight number proof Aeromexico operated?

No. AM may be a marketing code. Read the explicit operating-carrier statement.

Does ticket stock decide liability?

Not for the operating-carrier test. Ticket stock identifies a commercial role, not necessarily physical operation.

Who is responsible after partner rerouting?

Keep the original disruption and replacement performance distinct. The replacement airline does not automatically inherit liability for the first cancellation.

Can a codeshare change Mexico-to-Europe coverage?

Yes. If an EU or UK carrier actually operates the inbound sector, its status can change the territorial analysis.

Is the new nine-month claim period active?

No. At 9 September 2026, application of the July EU reform is deferred; current limitation law still applies.
