For non-EU airlines, direction is everything. Europe-to-Nigeria can be covered. Nigeria-to-Europe usually no, unless operating carrier is EU airline.
One ticket rule
If all flights dey one booking and first disruption makes final arrival 3+ hours late, EU261 can look at final destination. If you use separate tickets, airline may say it only owes you for the first flight.
Keep the booking reference and all boarding passes.
Common refusal
Airline may say:
- we are not EU airline;
- problem happen outside EU;
- weather or ATC caused delay;
- missed connection no be our fault;
- final delay no reach 3 hours.
Some of these can be true, but each one needs facts. EU departure can defeat the "not EU airline" argument.
Strong Europe-to-Nigeria examples
- Paris -> Istanbul -> Lagos, one ticket, final arrival 5 hours late.
- Frankfurt -> Doha -> Abuja, one ticket, delay makes final arrival 4 hours late.
- Amsterdam -> Dubai -> Lagos, cancellation with short notice.
