Vueling compensation: delay, cancellation and Barcelona connections

Vueling is an EU airline, so its qualifying flights can be protected both when they leave the EU or EEA and when Vueling operates them back from a third country into the protected area. Arrival at least three hours late can support compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. Cancellation also creates a choice between reimbursement and alternative transport, while meals and necessary accommodation are separate. On a connection through Barcelona, the final destination matters only when the sectors form one protected booking.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Vueling uses the VY code and belongs to International Airlines Group, but group ownership does not make British Airways or Iberia responsible for a Vueling-operated disruption. Start with the operator shown on the affected sector.

When Vueling is within EU261

Every Vueling-operated departure from an EU or EEA airport is territorially covered. Because Vueling is established in Spain, its own qualifying flight from a third country into the EU can also be covered. The passenger still needs a confirmed reservation, timely check-in where required and a compensable event.

A codeshare number does not replace the operator test. If another airline supplied the aircraft and crew, identify that legal entity. Conversely, a ticket bought from Iberia can still produce a claim against Vueling when Vueling actually operated the affected flight.

Flights touching the United Kingdom may also require UK261 analysis. Apply the framework that covers the itinerary and avoid presenting two statutory payments as cumulative for the same delay.

Three hours at the destination, not at the runway

Delay compensation is normally assessed at arrival. The useful timestamp is when at least one door opens and passengers can leave. Touchdown and gate arrival can be earlier, which matters when the result is close to three hours.

The standard bands are EUR 250 up to 1,500 kilometres, EUR 400 for other flights from 1,500 to 3,500 kilometres and longer intra-EU journeys, and EUR 600 for other flights over 3,500 kilometres. Many Vueling routes use the first two bands, but a protected connected itinerary can reach a longer final destination.

Save screenshots while travelling. Later schedule displays may show only the revised time. Boarding passes, Vueling messages, airport records and a travel certificate can help reconstruct the arrival.

Missing a Vueling connection in Barcelona

Barcelona-El Prat is Vueling's largest connection point. If both flights were accepted as one booking, a disruption on the inbound sector can be measured at the final destination. Vueling states that when both connecting flights are operated by it, affected passengers are moved to the next available option and receive care while waiting.

That does not turn every pair of Vueling tickets into a protected connection. Separate reservations, a self-transfer label or a requirement to collect and recheck baggage can signal independent contracts. Check the PNR, ticket numbers and terms of any connection guarantee.

When a protected connection is missed, record scheduled and actual times, the moment the gate closed, the route Vueling offered and final arrival. A rebooking receipt alone does not establish how late the passenger ultimately arrived.

Cancellation, refund and rerouting

Following cancellation, the passenger controls the choice between reimbursement and rerouting. A refund ends the carrier's obligation to transport on that ticket, so do not select it reflexively when reaching the destination remains essential.

Rerouting should be at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or at a later date chosen by the passenger subject to availability. If Vueling offers only an unreasonably late flight, request a practical alternative and preserve the refusal before buying replacement transport.

Fixed compensation is considered separately. Notice at least 14 days in advance normally prevents it. Notice within 14 days requires close comparison of the alternative's departure and arrival times and examination of the cancellation cause.

Care and reasonable costs

Vueling's passenger information recognises meals, communications and, when an overnight wait is needed, accommodation and transport. If these are not provided, retain itemised receipts and proof that staff or online support could not arrange assistance.

A five-hour departure delay can create a right to abandon the trip and recover unused transport, with a return to the first departure point where the journey has become pointless. Make that decision expressly and retain the airline's confirmation.

Care rights can remain even when severe weather or external air traffic restrictions defeat the fixed compensation claim. Do not let a refusal letter merge those separate questions.

What counts as extraordinary

Exceptional weather, airport closure, air traffic control action or security risk may qualify. Routine technical faults, crew organisation and normal aircraft rotation are generally part of airline operations. Vueling must identify the actual event and show reasonable measures, not merely select an “extraordinary circumstances” label.

If the disruption propagated from an earlier flight, request the rotation history and timing. An external event can explain an initial delay but not necessarily the entire later period after operations resumed.

Claiming from Vueling and using AESA

Vueling's help centre allows passengers to request compensation for delay, cancellation or overbooking, seek refunds and monitor an existing case. Prepare the booking code, passenger details, affected flight, final arrival and each requested amount. Keep the case number.

For eligible incidents connected with Spain, AESA provides an alternative dispute-resolution procedure after the passenger has first complained to the airline. Its binding route has scope and deadline conditions. Baggage and purely contractual disputes are not automatically part of the same EU261 ADR process.

Baggage requires a separate file. Make a PIR at the airport, retain the baggage tag and meet the written seven-day damage or 21-day delay periods. Necessary replacement purchases must be evidenced.

Use the airline compensation directory for an unexpected operator. The compensation calculator tests the flight-disruption route; keep the Montreal Convention baggage file separate.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

Is Vueling an EU airline?

Yes. Vueling is established in Spain, so its own qualifying inbound flights from third countries can be covered as well as departures from the EU or EEA.

Does a missed Barcelona connection count as one delay?

It can when the sectors are one protected booking. The delay is then assessed at the final destination. Separate self-transfer tickets normally remain separate.

Can Vueling replace a cash refund with flight credit?

Only with the passenger's informed agreement. A statutory monetary refund should remain available when reimbursement is chosen.

Does accepting a replacement flight waive compensation?

No. Rerouting and fixed compensation answer different rights. Compensation still depends on notice, arrival delay, cause and coverage.

Is baggage compensation EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600?

No. Those are EU261 flight-disruption bands. Baggage claims follow the Montreal Convention and documented loss, with their own notice periods.

What should I do if Vueling rejects the claim?

Ask for the precise cause and evidence, reply with the itinerary and arrival record, then assess AESA ADR, another competent body or court for the route.
