United Airlines flights from the UK: when UK261 applies
A United-operated flight departing the United Kingdom can qualify for UK261 compensation even though United is a US airline. Eligible delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can produce GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger. A separate United-operated journey from the US into the UK is normally outside the fixed-sum rule.

The direction test
| United itinerary | UK261 fixed-compensation scope |
|---|---|
| Heathrow-Newark | Can apply |
| Heathrow-Chicago-US city on one booking | Can apply to final destination |
| Edinburgh-US hub, if operated by United | Can apply |
| Newark-Heathrow operated by United | Normally does not apply |
| Newark-Heathrow operated by a qualifying UK or EU airline | Re-test under actual operator |
Passenger citizenship and the website used to buy the ticket do not alter this table. A US citizen departing Heathrow has UK rights; a UK citizen departing Newark on United does not gain them through nationality.
What counts as a qualifying United disruption?
Delay compensation normally requires arrival at the final destination at least three hours late. Cancellation compensation depends on notice, replacement timing and whether United proves extraordinary circumstances. Involuntary denied boarding uses its own conditions and can be payable without waiting for three hours.
For a directly connecting booking, final destination means the last airport on that protected journey. Heathrow-Newark-Denver issued together is assessed in Denver. If the passenger independently purchased Newark-Denver, the UK-protected contract normally ends in Newark.
Arrival is generally measured when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers may leave, not at touchdown.
Current UK amounts
| Journey band | Fixed amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | GBP 220 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | GBP 350 |
| Over 3,500 km | GBP 520 |
Most United departures from Heathrow to the United States are long distance. A final arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction to GBP 260 in the relevant long-haul situation. Four hours or more generally supports the full starting amount.
Amounts are usually per eligible passenger. They do not depend on whether the ticket was Economy or Polaris, although a cabin downgrade has a separate percentage-refund calculation.
When United may rely on extraordinary circumstances
United must identify an external event, connect it to the disruption and show reasonable measures. Extreme weather, an ATC restriction, airport closure or security event may qualify. Routine mechanical trouble and normal operational planning are not automatically exempt.
Ask for more than "air traffic" or "weather." Record the location, time, restriction and recovery decisions. If comparable flights operated, that does not automatically prove liability, but it can support a request for a flight-specific explanation.
Care and rerouting can remain due when the fixed amount is defeated. An overnight storm disruption can still require meals, hotel and airport transport.
United-operated inbound flights from the US
UK rules protect inbound journeys when the operating carrier has the required UK or EU status. United Airlines, Inc. does not. Therefore, a United-operated Washington Dulles-Heathrow delay normally has no GBP 520 award, however long it lasts.
A UA code is not conclusive. If Lufthansa or another eligible European carrier actually operates an inbound sector, its status can change the result. Conversely, a partner flight number on a United aircraft remains United-operated for this test.
US DOT refund rights may apply after cancellation or significant change when the passenger rejects the alternative. That refund is not UK fixed compensation.
Refund, rerouting and care from a UK airport
After a covered cancellation, United must offer reimbursement or rerouting. After a departure delay reaching five hours, the passenger can abandon the journey and seek a refund. Those choices are distinct from fixed compensation.
While waiting, care becomes due according to distance and delay. Long-haul passengers generally reach the care trigger after four hours. Keep itemised receipts if United fails to provide reasonable assistance.
Accepting rerouting does not automatically settle a compensation claim. Read any voucher or goodwill offer before acceptance and preserve its terms.
How to complain from the UK
Submit first through United Customer Care, stating UK261, the UK departure, final arrival delay and amount. Save the case number and exact attachments.
The UK CAA's current list of approved ADR participants does not list United under AviationADR or CEDR. When an airline is not signed up, the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team may review an unresolved complaint after the airline stage. PACT can advise and approach the airline, but it does not impose a binding decision like approved ADR.
Court limitation is generally discussed as six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and five years in Scotland, but forum, contract and procedural facts should be checked before relying on a final date.
The United Heathrow guide gives an airport-specific evidence and rerouting checklist.
Example: Heathrow-Newark-Phoenix
One United booking starts at Heathrow and ends in Phoenix. An avoidable aircraft rotation problem at Newark causes arrival in Phoenix five hours late. UK261 can cover the complete journey. The long-distance starting amount is GBP 520 per eligible passenger, subject to proof.
For Phoenix-Newark-Heathrow on the return, United remains the operator but the journey begins in the US. The return normally has no UK261 fixed compensation. Baggage, refund or customer-service commitments may still apply.
FAQ
Does UK261 apply to United Airlines from Heathrow?
Yes. Any airline can be covered when the protected journey departs a UK airport.
Can United owe GBP 520 for a delay?
Yes on an eligible long-haul UK departure, usually when final arrival is at least three hours late and no extraordinary-circumstances defence succeeds.
Is United covered from Newark to Heathrow?
Normally not for fixed UK261 compensation because United is a US carrier and that journey begins outside the UK.
Where do I escalate a rejected United UK claim?
Complain to United first. Since United is not on the CAA's current approved ADR participant list, PACT may be the appropriate CAA route for an unresolved case.
Does accepting a new flight remove compensation?
No. Rerouting and fixed compensation can coexist, although the replacement arrival time may reduce or remove the amount.
