United Airlines Heathrow delay or cancellation compensation

A United-operated flight departing London Heathrow can qualify under UK261 for up to GBP 520 per eligible passenger after a long delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding. The United-operated return from the United States to Heathrow normally is not covered by UK261 because United is neither a UK nor EU carrier and the journey starts outside the UK.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Check your Heathrow journey using direction, operating carrier, final arrival and cause. A return ticket can produce a valid outbound claim and no inbound UK261 claim.

Delay amount from Heathrow

Most Heathrow-US journeys exceed 3,500 kilometres. Under current UK261 rules:

  • arrival three to four hours late can produce GBP 260;
  • arrival more than four hours late can produce GBP 520;
  • the amount is per eligible passenger;
  • extraordinary circumstances can remove the fixed amount if United proves cause and reasonable measures.

Measure arrival at the final destination on a directly connecting booking. If Heathrow-Newark-Charleston is one reservation and the passenger reaches Charleston five hours late, Charleston is normally the endpoint for the delay test.

Aircraft arrival on the runway is not the controlling moment. Preserve door-opening time and the actual final connection arrival.

Cancellation at Heathrow

When United cancels a covered departure, choose:

  1. reimbursement where travel no longer serves its purpose;
  2. rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions; or
  3. rerouting on a later date convenient to you, subject to seats.

Fixed compensation is separate. It normally requires notice fewer than 14 days before departure, subject to replacement-timing exceptions and extraordinary circumstances.

Ask United to consider reasonable partner options if its own replacement is substantially later. Star Alliance membership does not guarantee every seat, but UK guidance recognizes that another airline or suitable transport may be required where it reaches the destination significantly sooner.

Heathrow care and accommodation

United must provide reasonable care while a covered passenger waits: meals, communications, overnight accommodation and airport-hotel transport. The duty can remain during severe weather or ATC disruption even where fixed compensation is not payable.

Ask for vouchers and hotel first. If assistance is unavailable, make proportionate arrangements and keep itemised receipts. A standard airport hotel and necessary transfer are easier to recover than luxury accommodation.

If you choose reimbursement and abandon travel, continuing care normally ends. Do not select refund when you still want rerouting.

Terminal and airport evidence

Heathrow currently lists United at Terminal 2, but terminal and check-in arrangements can change. Confirm in United's booking and Heathrow's terminal finder on the travel date.

At the airport, preserve:

  • departure-board photographs with timestamps;
  • gate or service-desk messages;
  • original and replacement boarding passes;
  • meal and hotel vouchers;
  • case numbers and rerouting requests;
  • actual departure and final arrival;
  • baggage file reference if bags do not follow rerouting.

Arrive within United's published check-in and gate deadlines. A passenger who misses boarding through late arrival has a different case from airline-caused denied boarding.

Weather, ATC and Heathrow capacity

Heathrow weather, air-traffic-flow restrictions, runway events or security decisions can be extraordinary. United should identify the restriction, timing and direct effect on your flight, then show reasonable measures.

"Heathrow congestion" is not a complete explanation. Ask whether a binding ATC rate, airport closure or ordinary rotation problem caused the disruption. Compare other flights cautiously because aircraft, slot, route and crew constraints differ.

Care remains separate. The United weather and ATC guide provides a focused evidence request.

Connections and separate tickets

On a single United or partner reservation, final destination matters. A delay at Heathrow that causes a US connection failure can qualify based on arrival at the last ticketed airport. Keep all sectors and replacement itineraries.

For separate bookings, UK261 normally does not merge the second ticket into the first journey. Insurance or an OTA connection guarantee may help, but allow enough self-transfer time and collect baggage where required.

If Heathrow is a connecting point rather than initial departure, assess where the continuous booking began and which carrier operates the relevant inbound flight. A United-operated US-Heathrow-Europe journey usually starts outside UK scope.

How to submit the claim

Build a short chronology:

  1. Heathrow departure and final ticketed destination;
  2. operating carrier on every sector;
  3. scheduled and actual final arrival;
  4. cancellation notice or denied-boarding record;
  5. exact cause United supplied;
  6. rerouting and care received;
  7. fixed amount and expenses claimed separately.

United directs disruption compensation and expense requests to Customer Care. Use the United form and contact guide and keep proof of submission.

United is not currently listed among the CAA's AviationADR or CEDR member airlines. If the airline does not resolve the complaint, check the CAA's current ADR list and Passenger Advice and Complaints Team route rather than naming an ADR body that lacks jurisdiction.

Example: Heathrow to San Francisco

United's Heathrow-San Francisco departure arrives five hours late because of ordinary aircraft planning. UK261 can support GBP 520 per eligible passenger. Reasonable meals during the wait are additional.

On United-operated San Francisco-Heathrow, the same delay normally has no UK261 fixed amount. DOT, United's contract and insurance should be checked instead.

FAQ

Does UK261 cover United departing Heathrow?

Yes. UK261 covers departures from the UK on any airline, including United.

How much is a long United delay from Heathrow worth?

Usually GBP 260 for arrival three to four hours late and GBP 520 for more than four hours, subject to all other tests.

Does UK261 cover United flying from the US to Heathrow?

Normally not when United operates the flight. An eligible UK or EU operating carrier can change the inbound answer.

Is United always in Heathrow Terminal 2?

Heathrow currently lists Terminal 2, but confirm the terminal and check-in details on the day of travel.

Are hotel and meals due during Heathrow weather disruption?

They can be on a covered departure. Care is separate from the defence to fixed compensation.
