United Airlines missed connection at Newark or Chicago
After a missed United connection at Newark or Chicago, one booking normally entitles the passenger to rerouting to the final destination. Fixed EU261 or UK261 compensation is realistic when the journey began in Europe or the UK, final arrival is at least three hours late and the cause is legally attributable to the carrier. A US-origin journey or self-transfer needs a different analysis.

United identifies New York/Newark and Chicago among its US hub cities. Hub status helps explain the connection, but it does not decide compensation. Route direction and ticket structure do.
Immediate hub checklist
- Screenshot the original complete itinerary before reissue.
- Save inbound door-opening and new departure times.
- Keep the boarding pass showing the onward gate and cutoff.
- Ask United to reroute to the final city, not merely refund the missed segment.
- Request meals or hotel when the protected wait qualifies.
- Record whether weather, ATC, mechanics, crew or immigration caused the miss.
Do not let the app delete the evidence that all sectors were one ticket.
Newark and Chicago involve US entry formalities
Passengers arriving internationally commonly clear immigration and customs at the first US airport, retrieve checked baggage and recheck it for the domestic connection. They may also need security screening. These steps take time, but they do not convert one e-ticket into separate travel.
Proceed promptly and keep timestamps. If the inbound aircraft arrived late, note when the door opened, when baggage appeared and when the onward gate closed. If the ticketed connection was missed despite reasonable conduct, the chronology helps distinguish carrier disruption from a passenger documentation or delay problem.
Minimum connecting time is a scheduling standard, not automatic proof of airline fault. Compensation still depends on why final arrival was late.
Europe-origin itinerary
Dublin-Newark-Cleveland, Frankfurt-Chicago-Des Moines or another directly connecting booking beginning in Europe can fall under EU261. Heathrow-Newark-US city or Heathrow-Chicago-US city can fall under UK261.
Measure delay at the final city. A 75-minute inbound delay can lead to five hours at destination after the connection is missed. C-561/20 confirms that EU261 can remain applicable when the decisive problem lies on a later United sector inside the US.
For the return, reassess from scratch. Cleveland-Newark-Dublin operated by United starts in the US and normally lacks EU261 fixed compensation.
Self-transfer or separate ticket
If the transatlantic ticket ends at Newark or Chicago and a domestic flight was purchased separately, United's EU or UK duty normally ends at the hub destination. The airline may assist voluntarily, but EU261 does not automatically require rerouting under the second contract.
Check travel insurance, credit-card protection and any connection guarantee sold by an intermediary. Keep proof that the onward ticket was lost because of the first disruption, but make the claim under the correct framework.
Rerouting choices
Ask United for the earliest reasonable route to the final destination. Alternatives may include another United flight, a Star Alliance partner, a nearby airport with ground transport or, on shorter corridors, rail or road transport.
Comparable conditions do not guarantee the same seat number. A cabin downgrade has a separate refund. If United offers only a much later flight while a realistic option is available, document the flight number, inventory, price and refusal before self-booking.
Do not accept an involuntary refund when you still need rerouting without recording your objection. Reimbursement and rerouting are alternative transport choices.
Care at the hub
For a covered journey, United should provide reasonable meals and communication during the qualifying wait. Overnight rerouting can require accommodation and airport-hotel transport. Extraordinary weather may remove fixed compensation but does not automatically remove care.
Use vouchers when practical. If none are provided, purchase proportionate necessities and keep itemised receipts. Avoid premium hotel upgrades and alcohol unless exceptional circumstances justify them.
For a US-origin journey outside EU261 or UK261, check United's current DOT dashboard commitments for controllable disruptions. Those commitments are not universal statutory care for every cause.
Newark-specific evidence
Record terminal or gate changes, AirTrain or shuttle instructions and any requirement to reclear security. Preserve immigration and baggage delays. If United reroutes through another New York-area airport, ask who pays the transfer and save the written instruction.
A diversion to or from another airport can affect final-arrival measurement. The booked destination remains relevant until United provides onward transport.
Chicago-specific evidence
Record the international arrival terminal, onward terminal, transfer instructions and security timeline. Chicago weather and ATC explanations should be tied to the actual period and flight; a general reference to winter conditions is not enough.
United's corporate materials identify Chicago as a hub, but do not hard-code a connection time. Gate, immigration and schedule conditions vary by itinerary and date.
Fixed compensation calculation
Europe-US connected journeys usually exceed 3,500 km. A qualifying EU origin can reach EUR 600; a qualifying UK origin can reach GBP 520. Final arrival between three and four hours can permit a long-haul 50% reduction.
Payment is per eligible passenger. Care expenses are calculated from receipts. Do not claim a separate fixed amount for the inbound and domestic sectors.
The United missed-connection guide explains the complete legal test.
For one booking that began in the EU but lost time on a later domestic US segment, read the narrower C-561/20 connection guide before treating the US sector in isolation.
Example: Heathrow-Newark-Columbus
One United booking arrives at Newark two hours late because of routine aircraft maintenance. Immigration is completed promptly, but the onward flight has departed. United reroutes the passenger, who reaches Columbus six hours late. UK261 can cover final arrival, and GBP 520 may be due subject to evidence.
If the traveller bought Newark-Columbus separately, UK261 normally measures only to Newark. The domestic loss needs another basis.
FAQ
Will United rebook a missed connection at Newark?
On one protected booking, United should reroute the passenger to the final destination. Separate tickets may not receive the same protection.
Does customs baggage recheck break one booking?
No. Required US entry procedures do not by themselves split a single e-ticket into separate contracts.
Is delay measured at Newark or my last city?
Use the final ticketed destination on a directly connecting booking. Separate bookings are normally measured independently.
Can Chicago weather defeat compensation?
It can when United proves extraordinary conditions caused the disruption and reasonable measures could not avoid it. Care and rerouting may remain due.
Can a US domestic segment be covered by EU261?
Yes when it belongs to one directly connecting journey beginning in the EU, following the rule confirmed in C-561/20.
