Qatar Airways diverted flight compensation: another airport is not the end

A Qatar Airways diversion can produce EU261 or UK261 compensation when a protected journey reaches the original destination at least three hours late and the cause was within airline responsibility. If the aircraft lands at another airport serving the same city or region, Qatar Airways must arrange or pay reasonable transport to the booked airport or an agreed nearby destination. A diversion caused by severe weather or airspace closure can remove fixed compensation but not care and onward transport.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Do not measure only the time the diverted aircraft landed. Record when the passenger actually reached the contractual destination.

Diversion outcome table

OutcomeMain right to test
Lands at nearby airport, bus supplied promptlyArrival includes ground transfer timing
Lands far away, no transport offeredRerouting and reasonable ground cost
Returns to departure airportCancellation-style refund/rerouting analysis
Lands in Doha but onward destination omittedOne-ticket final destination still controls
Diversion caused by weatherFixed amount may fail; care and transport remain
Diversion caused by ordinary technical faultFixed compensation can remain possible

The flight status “landed” does not prove performance of the complete carriage contract.

Coverage for Qatar Airways diversions

Qatar Airways-operated departures from covered EU/EEA/Swiss airports can fall under EU261. Departures from the UK can fall under UK261. A Qatar-operated journey beginning in Doha, Asia, Africa or Australia normally has no European fixed payment merely because it was diverted near a European destination.

On one booking through Doha, preserve the first protected origin. A diversion of the first flight can cause a missed connection and a much larger final delay at the last ticketed city.

If a partner operated the diverted segment, direct the fixed claim to that operator. Ticket issuer and operating carrier can differ.

Another airport serving the same city or region

Court of Justice authority treats landing at a nearby airport as potentially completing the flight only when the airline also addresses transfer. Qatar Airways should offer transport to the airport in the booking or another close destination agreed with the passenger.

Examples include a diversion from one London airport to another, or to an airport reasonably serving the same region. Whether an airport is “nearby” is factual. Distance, transport links, time of day and border requirements matter.

If Qatar Airways provides no transport, use a reasonable option and keep itemised receipts. A private limousine is difficult to justify where a safe train or shared coach was available.

Diversion to a genuinely different destination

Landing in another country or remote city can require full rerouting, care and immigration support. Qatar Airways remains responsible for transport to the final ticketed destination on a protected booking.

Do not accept a document that calls the diverted airport the “final destination” unless that was genuinely agreed. Ask for the onward plan in writing. If entry permission is unavailable, Qatar Airways should seek an airside or alternative transport solution.

For checked baggage, confirm whether it will be unloaded, forwarded or delivered later. Report a missing bag at the eventual destination.

How to calculate arrival delay

Use the time the passenger reaches the booked airport or agreed nearby point after the airline-provided transfer. If Qatar Airways provides no transfer and the passenger arranges reasonable travel, preserve departure and arrival receipts.

On a continuous connection, continue measuring to the last ticketed city. A Rome-Doha diversion can arrive at Doha only two hours late yet cause an eight-hour delay in Bangkok.

For long journeys, arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction. Above four hours, EUR 600 or GBP 520 commonly becomes the starting figure, subject to cause.

The three-hour threshold guide explains door opening and ground transfer.

Cause of diversion

Potentially extraordinary causes include severe weather, airport closure, medical or security emergency, ATC instruction and sudden airspace restriction. Qatar Airways should prove the exact event and reasonable measures.

Ordinary technical problems, fuel planning within airline control or operational rotation can leave compensation due. A precautionary diversion for a cockpit indication still requires the underlying technical cause, not just the safety decision.

A passenger medical emergency can be external, but Qatar Airways should explain why the resulting recovery and rerouting took as long as claimed.

Care and rerouting after landing

On a protected journey, provide reasonable meals, communication and, where overnight wait is unavoidable, accommodation and transport. This duty continues during extraordinary circumstances.

If the flight returns to the departure airport and is then cancelled, the passenger chooses reimbursement or rerouting. If travel has become useless after an already flown segment, a return to the first departure point can be relevant.

Ask for partner flights and practical ground alternatives. If no reasonable route is offered, document options before buying replacement transport.

Evidence at the diverted airport

Collect:

  • original boarding pass and itinerary;
  • actual landing and door-opening time;
  • Qatar Airways announcement naming the cause;
  • diverted airport and distance to booked airport;
  • transfer offer or refusal;
  • ground tickets and receipts;
  • replacement connection and final arrival;
  • baggage record;
  • operated-by details.

Photograph airport displays and retain push notifications. Write down when passengers were told to leave, wait or collect bags. The airline’s chronology may otherwise end at landing.

Claim structure

Separate:

  1. fixed compensation based on final arrival and cause;
  2. reasonable ground transport from diverted airport;
  3. meals, hotel and local transport during wait;
  4. replacement travel to final destination;
  5. baggage claim if the bag did not follow.

Use Qatar Airways’ Feedback & Concerns channel when Qatar Airways operated. Attach the complete route and final-arrival calculation. The expense guide covers receipt presentation.

Examples

London-Doha diverted for ordinary technical issue: after ground/air recovery, final arrival is six hours late. UK261 can support GBP 520 per passenger plus reasonable care.

Paris-Doha diverted by severe weather: Qatar Airways proves airport closure. Fixed EUR 600 may be excluded, but onward transport, care and rerouting remain.

Doha-Paris lands at another regional airport: Qatar Airways operates inbound from outside the EU, so EU261 fixed compensation normally does not apply. Contractual transfer and Montreal loss can still matter.

FAQ

Is a diverted Qatar Airways flight automatically cancelled?

No. It may still be completed through another airport, but return to origin or failure to reach the destination can require cancellation analysis.

Who pays transport from the diverted airport?

On a protected flight to a nearby airport, Qatar Airways should arrange or reimburse reasonable transport to the booked airport or agreed destination.

When is arrival measured after diversion?

Use arrival at the original airport or agreed nearby destination, including required ground transfer, and continue to the final city on one ticket.

Does weather remove all diversion rights?

No. It can remove fixed compensation, but care, transfer and refund/rerouting remain.

Can I take a taxi after diversion?

Use a reasonable option and ask Qatar Airways first where practical. Keep itemised proof and explain why cheaper transport was unavailable.
