Qatar Airways three-hour delay compensation: final arrival matters
Three hours is the usual final-arrival threshold for fixed Qatar Airways compensation on a journey covered by EU261 or UK261. It is not measured when the aircraft leaves, lands or reaches Doha. On one protected booking, compare scheduled and actual door-opening time at the last ticketed destination. For travel over 3,500 km, a delay between three and four hours can permit a 50% reduction.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The threshold has no value until route coverage is established. A five-hour Qatar-operated Doha-London arrival normally has no UK261 fixed sum, while a 3:10 delay on London-Doha can be covered.
Three clocks passengers often confuse
| Clock | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Departure waiting time | When meals, communication and hotel care begin |
| Final arrival delay | Whether the usual three-hour fixed-payment threshold is crossed |
| Five-hour departure delay | Whether the passenger can abandon the journey and seek reimbursement |
A traveller can receive care after waiting at departure without later reaching the three-hour compensation threshold. Conversely, a modest first-flight delay can cause a missed connection and a much larger final-arrival delay.
What counts as arrival?
Arrival is generally the moment at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are allowed to leave. Touchdown, runway exit and gate parking can all occur earlier. On a close case, a difference of minutes may decide whether 2:58 or 3:04 is recorded.
Collect more than a flight-tracking screenshot. Note the door-opening time, save app messages, photograph the gate display where appropriate and retain any written arrival record. Independent tracking data can support the chronology but should be paired with passenger evidence.
Ask Qatar Airways which arrival time it used if a claim is rejected as under three hours.
One booking moves the clock to the final destination
The final-destination rule is especially important on Qatar Airways journeys through Doha.
Imagine Berlin-Doha-Bangkok on one reservation. Berlin-Doha arrives only two hours late, but the connection is missed and Bangkok is reached eleven hours after schedule. The protected journey began in the EU, and the relevant delay is eleven hours at Bangkok.
Now change the facts: Berlin-Doha and Doha-Bangkok were purchased separately. The first contract ends in Doha, so its statutory arrival delay is measured there. The missed second ticket does not automatically become part of the EU261 calculation.
The ticket number alone is not conclusive. Look for a single reservation, through destination, through-checked baggage entitlement and a protected connection recorded in the itinerary. Read the separate-ticket guide when two booking references appear.
Coverage comes before the clock
Qatar Airways is not established as an EU or UK carrier. Its operated departures from the EU, EEA, Switzerland and UK can be protected, but its operated inbound flights from Doha and other non-European origins normally are not.
Examples:
- Brussels-Doha, Qatar-operated: EU261 can use final arrival.
- London-Doha-Melbourne on one ticket: UK261 can use Melbourne arrival.
- Doha-Brussels, Qatar-operated: normally no EU261 fixed payment.
- Delhi-Doha-London, Qatar-operated: normally no UK261 fixed payment.
- Doha-London operated by British Airways: operator status can change inbound UK coverage.
The Qatar Airways pillar provides the full direction and operator test.
Three hours does not always mean the full top band
For covered travel above 3,500 km, the standard EU261 amount is EUR 600 and the UK long-distance band is GBP 520. A lawful 50% reduction can apply when arrival is more than three but no more than four hours late in the relevant long-distance case.
That creates a practical distinction:
| Long-distance final arrival | Likely starting calculation |
|---|---|
| 2:59 late | No delay compensation |
| 3:01 late | Potential half of the top band |
| 3:45 late | Potential half of the top band |
| 4:01 late | Full top band normally becomes the starting point |
Cause and coverage still have to be satisfied. Do not describe every 3:01 Qatar Airways delay as an automatic EUR 300 or GBP 260 payment.
The amount calculator guide covers shorter distances, cancellation windows and per-passenger totals.
Delay at departure can be different
EU261’s care thresholds depend on distance and expected departure delay. On a long Qatar Airways departure from Europe, care usually starts when the delay reaches the relevant four-hour threshold. UK guidance similarly separates waiting-time care from final-arrival compensation.
The airline should provide proportionate meals and refreshments, communication and, if an overnight stay is needed, accommodation with transport. These duties do not wait until the passenger eventually crosses three hours at destination.
If departure delay reaches at least five hours, a passenger may choose reimbursement instead of travelling. Taking that option ends the obligation to carry the passenger onward under that choice, so it should not be selected casually on an expensive connecting itinerary.
Causes and the burden on Qatar Airways
Crossing three hours proves severity, not airline responsibility. Qatar Airways can resist fixed compensation by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures.
An airport closure or air traffic restriction may qualify. An ordinary mechanical defect or internal planning issue often does not. Mixed causes require a timeline: if one hour came from weather and four hours from a later operational decision, the airline should not simply label the entire event “weather”.
Request the specific event, when it affected the flight, why a substitute aircraft or rerouting was unavailable and what recovery action was taken. The technical-fault guide addresses maintenance explanations.
Evidence for a close threshold case
Keep:
- original scheduled arrival at the final destination;
- actual door-opening time, not only landing time;
- boarding pass and replacement documents for each segment;
- booking confirmation proving one continuous journey;
- operated-by details;
- Qatar Airways notices and stated reason;
- contemporaneous photos, messages or witness notes.
Write the calculation in minutes. “Scheduled door arrival 14:20; door opened 17:27; final delay 3 hours 7 minutes” is stronger than “about three hours late”. If Qatar Airways measures at Doha rather than the last ticketed city, attach the missed-connection and rebooking record.
Three threshold examples
Madrid-Doha, door opens 3:18 late: EU261 applies to the Qatar-operated departure. Because the route exceeds 3,500 km and arrival is under four hours, a 50% reduction may apply if the cause is compensable.
London-Doha-Auckland, final arrival 6:30 late: one protected UK booking and a missed Doha connection point to the full GBP 520 long-distance band, subject to cause.
Doha-Paris, door opens 4:40 late: the time threshold is crossed, but territorial coverage is not. Qatar Airways is a non-EU operator departing outside the EU, so the fixed EU261 claim normally fails.
FAQ
Is Qatar Airways compensation based on departure or arrival delay?
Fixed delay compensation is normally based on lateness at the final ticketed destination. Departure waiting time controls care and the five-hour refund choice.
Does landing three hours late qualify?
Not by itself. The relevant time is usually when a door opens and passengers can leave, which may be later than touchdown.
Can a missed Doha connection turn a two-hour delay into a claim?
Yes, on one protected reservation when the passenger reaches the final destination at least three hours late.
Why might Qatar Airways offer only half of EUR 600?
For a covered journey over 3,500 km, final arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction.
Does three hours create compensation on Doha to Europe?
Normally not when Qatar Airways operates from Doha. The threshold does not expand EU261 or UK261 territorial coverage.
