Qatar Airways delayed flight compensation: when can you claim?
A delayed Qatar Airways journey can qualify for up to EUR 600 when it starts in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, or up to GBP 520 when it starts in the United Kingdom. The usual fixed-payment threshold is at least three hours late at the final destination. A Qatar-operated trip beginning in Doha or Asia normally has no EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation, even when it arrives in Europe late.

The claim becomes credible only after four questions are answered: where the protected journey began, who operated the disrupted segment, how late the ticketed final destination was reached, and what caused the delay.
Quick delay decision table
| Delayed journey | Fixed-compensation position |
|---|---|
| Frankfurt-Doha, Qatar-operated, arrival 4:20 late | EU261 can apply; EUR 600 starting band |
| London-Doha-Colombo on one booking, final arrival 5:40 late | UK261 can apply; GBP 520 starting band |
| Doha-Paris, Qatar-operated, arrival 5 hours late | Normally no EU261 fixed amount |
| Mumbai-Doha-Manchester, Qatar-operated | Normally no UK261 fixed amount |
| Barcelona-Doha-Bangkok, separate second ticket | First booking assessed only to Doha |
| QR code but Finnair-operated EU departure | Claim normally follows Finnair as operator |
Run the itinerary through the calculator before relying on the amount shown in an airline email or claims advertisement.
Test 1: did the journey start in protected territory?
For Qatar Airways, direction is the first filter because the airline is based outside the EU and UK.
EU261 can cover Qatar Airways-operated departures from EU airports and the corresponding protected departure framework in Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. UK261 covers Qatar Airways-operated departures from the UK. The passenger’s passport does not matter.
Inbound coverage is narrower. Qatar Airways is not an EU or UK carrier, so a Qatar-operated Doha-Paris or Doha-London flight normally falls outside the respective fixed-payment regime. A return ticket is not treated as one undivided flight: outbound and inbound directions are tested separately unless a specific continuous journey is being assessed from its true origin.
See the coverage comparison if the itinerary crosses several legal systems.
Test 2: which airline actually operated the delayed segment?
A QR flight number is a marketing identifier. Qatar Airways works with oneworld and other partners, so the aircraft and crew may belong to British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, American Airlines, Virgin Australia or another carrier.
Fixed compensation normally follows the operating airline. A delayed Doha-London service operated by British Airways can have a different inbound UK261 result from the same route operated by Qatar Airways. Likewise, an EU departure sold by Qatar Airways but flown by Finnair is addressed to Finnair for the statutory delay.
Check the e-ticket, booking confirmation and boarding pass for “operated by”. Do not infer the operator from the website, loyalty programme or lounge used.
Test 3: how late was final arrival?
The usual threshold is at least three hours at the ticketed final destination. Touchdown is not the legal arrival moment. Record when a door opened and passengers were allowed to leave.
This matters especially in Doha connections. If Paris-Doha arrives two hours late but the passenger misses Doha-Bangkok and reaches Bangkok eight hours late, the protected one-ticket journey is measured at Bangkok. The first segment does not need to be three hours late by itself.
Separate tickets change the endpoint. If Paris-Doha and Doha-Bangkok were independent bookings, EU261 normally measures the first contract only to Doha. Losing the second ticket may create a provable-damage issue, but it does not automatically extend the first statutory destination.
The missed-connection guide explains the one-reservation test.
Test 4: what caused the delay?
Qatar Airways must pay fixed compensation only when it cannot establish a qualifying extraordinary circumstance and reasonable measures. The evidence should distinguish an external event from the airline’s ordinary operation.
Potentially extraordinary causes include severe weather at the relevant airport, air traffic flow restrictions, airport closure, security events and some external strikes. The defence still needs a causal link to the specific journey and proof that reasonable alternatives could not avoid the final delay.
Routine technical faults, aircraft rotation, late cleaning, ordinary crew planning and vague “operational reasons” often require a stronger explanation from the airline. Ask for the exact event, its timing and the mitigation attempted.
How much can a delayed journey pay?
| Covered category | Current standard amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km under EU261 | EUR 250 |
| Relevant 1,500-3,500 km category | EUR 400 |
| Other journeys over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
| UK short, medium and long categories | GBP 220, GBP 350, GBP 520 |
Qatar Airways journeys from Europe or the UK through Doha are commonly over 3,500 km. For long distance, arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction. Under EU261 this can mean EUR 300 rather than EUR 600. At four hours or more, the full top band normally becomes the starting calculation.
Multiply by eligible passengers, not bookings. Three qualifying travellers at EUR 600 each have a combined EUR 1,800 claim. Keep care costs and proven Montreal Convention loss in separate schedules.
Care starts before the compensation threshold
Meals, refreshments, communication, hotel accommodation and transport can become due while a protected passenger waits, based on distance and departure delay. These duties can apply before final arrival reaches three hours and can continue even when bad weather removes fixed compensation.
If Qatar Airways does not provide usable assistance, buy reasonable necessities and keep itemised receipts. A luxury hotel, alcohol or unrelated shopping can be challenged. The care guide distinguishes statutory assistance from Qatar Airways’ planned transit-accommodation product.
A departure delay of at least five hours also creates a choice to abandon the protected journey and request reimbursement, with a return to the first departure point where relevant. That option is different from continuing and later seeking fixed compensation.
Evidence that proves a Qatar Airways delay
Build a short chronology:
- scheduled departure and final arrival from the original ticket;
- actual departure and door-opening time at the final destination;
- every missed connection and replacement segment;
- the exact operating carrier for each flight;
- Qatar Airways messages describing the cause;
- assistance offered, refused or unavailable;
- itemised expenditure and currency.
Keep the booking reference, 157-ticket number where applicable, boarding passes and reissue documents. Screenshots should include time and context. Ask airport staff for written delay information, but do not surrender original documents.
How to present the request
Use Qatar Airways’ Feedback & Concerns route when Qatar Airways operated the covered service. Start with the route-coverage sentence, then provide the final arrival calculation and amount per passenger. Ask for the detailed cause if it was not supplied.
Separate three remedies under clear headings: fixed EU261 or UK261 compensation, statutory care expenses, and any ticket refund or proven damage. This prevents a meal reimbursement from being treated as settlement of the fixed claim.
If the reply confuses an inbound Doha journey with a protected outbound journey, restate the first airport and attach the complete ticket. If it measures delay only at Doha despite one reservation to a later city, provide the replacement itinerary and final door-opening evidence.
Delay examples
Amsterdam-Doha-Singapore, one booking: the first flight arrives 2:15 late, the connection is missed and Singapore is reached 10 hours late. EU261 can assess the final delay because the protected journey began in Amsterdam. A non-extraordinary cause can support EUR 600 per passenger.
London-Doha, 3:25 late: UK261 can apply, but the long-distance reduction window requires checking. The possible starting amount may be half of GBP 520 rather than the full band.
Doha-Manchester, 6 hours late: Qatar Airways operates from outside the UK. The delay is real, but that direction normally has no UK261 fixed sum. Contractual assistance and proven Montreal Convention damage remain separate possibilities.
FAQ
How many hours late must Qatar Airways be for compensation?
Final arrival usually must be at least three hours late on a journey covered by EU261 or UK261. Long-distance cases between three and four hours can be reduced by half.
Does a two-hour delay in Doha count if I miss my connection?
Yes, when one protected booking results in arrival at the final ticketed destination at least three hours late. The endpoint, not the intermediate delay alone, is measured.
Is Qatar Airways delay compensation available from India to Europe?
Normally not under EU261 or UK261 when Qatar Airways operates a journey beginning in India. A European or UK operating carrier can change the scope.
Can weather remove every passenger right?
No. It can remove fixed compensation when properly proved, but care and cancellation remedies can remain on a protected journey.
Should I claim against Qatar Airways for a QR codeshare?
Only if Qatar Airways actually operated the disrupted flight. The statutory request normally follows the airline supplying the aircraft and crew.
