PLAY Airlines claims after closure: compensation and refunds

PLAY Airlines ceased operations and cancelled all flights on 29 September 2025. It is no longer possible to treat a PLAY booking as an ordinary live-airline claim. A passenger may still have an EU261 or EEA claim for a disruption that happened while PLAY was flying, but having a legal entitlement and recovering money from an insolvent company are separate questions. For an unused ticket cancelled by the collapse, check card chargeback, package-organiser protection, travel insurance and the insolvency process immediately. Do not buy a new ticket assuming PLAY will reimburse it.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

PLAY used the OG code and was established in Iceland. Iceland participates in the European Economic Area, so qualifying PLAY flights were subject to the EU261 passenger-rights framework while the airline operated. The closure did not retrospectively erase rights arising from earlier delays, cancellations or denied boarding, but it fundamentally changed the practical recovery route.

What the shutdown changed

PLAY's entire flight programme ended at once. Its old website and service-request links are no longer a reliable submission channel. Advice that tells passengers to wait for the next PLAY flight, use the former claim form or request rerouting from normal customer support is therefore obsolete.

The closure also means that an enforcement decision is not the same as cash in the passenger's account. EU261 defines rights against the operating carrier; it does not create a public guarantee fund for every airline debt. If the debtor cannot pay ordinary claims, passengers may rank alongside other unsecured creditors under the insolvency procedure.

Check which legal company appears on the ticket and receipt. A marketing reference, travel-agent invoice or card descriptor can help identify the party that took payment. Do not submit bank details or identity documents to an unofficial website that merely reproduces PLAY branding.

A disruption that happened while PLAY was operating

A historical claim should still be analysed under the rules that applied to the flight. PLAY was an Icelandic EEA carrier. A PLAY-operated journey departing the EU or EEA could fall within EU261, and a PLAY-operated arrival from North America into Iceland or another protected destination could also qualify because of the carrier's EEA status.

For a delay, measure arrival at the ticketed final destination. Three hours or more can support fixed compensation when the distance band and other conditions are met and the airline cannot establish extraordinary circumstances. The usual bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600. A one-booking connection through Keflavik can make the final arrival decisive; two self-transfer tickets are normally separate contracts.

For a cancellation announced less than 14 days before travel, fixed compensation may have arisen in addition to refund, rerouting and care. Denied boarding can create a separate entitlement. Meals, accommodation and transport reasonably bought during an eligible wait should be documented with itemised receipts.

The fact that PLAY later failed does not convert every earlier disruption into an extraordinary circumstance. Examine the cause on the date of travel. Severe North Atlantic weather or an air traffic restriction may be extraordinary; ordinary crew planning, aircraft rotation or routine technical issues usually require a different assessment.

Use the delayed-flight guide to test final arrival and the compensation calculator to estimate the statutory band. The result shows the potential entitlement, not a guarantee of recovery from an insolvent debtor.

A flight cancelled because PLAY stopped operating

An unused service normally creates a claim for the ticket price. In an ordinary cancellation, the airline would offer reimbursement or rerouting. After a complete shutdown, however, PLAY could not operate a replacement and passengers had to arrange travel through another carrier.

Do not describe the whole price of a new ticket as automatic EUR 600 compensation. These are different heads of claim. Fixed EU261 compensation depends on the regulation's conditions. Refund concerns the unused original fare. A replacement-ticket loss may involve rerouting rights, contractual damages, package law, insurance or insolvency, and recoverability must be assessed separately.

Before buying a replacement, preserve screenshots of the cancellation, the absence of an offered alternative and comparable fares. Choose a reasonable route and cabin. The evidence may support a claim against a package organiser, insurer, card provider or estate even where direct recovery from PLAY is difficult.

The cancelled-flight guide explains the normal refund-versus-rerouting choice. Apply it carefully here because the operating carrier is no longer trading.

Card payment, package holiday, agent or insurance

The payment chain may be more valuable than another email to the failed airline.

Card payment: ask the issuing bank about chargeback for a service not provided and any statutory credit-card protection in the cardholder's country. Schemes and national laws have different time limits. Send the booking confirmation, card statement, cancellation proof and evidence that no refund arrived.

Package holiday: where flight and another travel service formed a legally protected package, the organiser may owe an alternative or refund independently of the airline's insolvency. An organiser should not dismiss the passenger solely by pointing to PLAY.

Travel agent or OTA: establish whether the intermediary still holds the money, received a supplier refund or merely transmitted the fare. Request a transaction history and a written statement of its role. A booking platform is not automatically liable for every airline debt, but it should account for funds it controls.

Travel insurance: airline-failure or supplier-failure cover is policy-specific. Notify the insurer promptly and do not assume that generic cancellation cover includes insolvency.

Avoid duplicate recovery. If a bank refunds the fare, disclose that outcome in any later insolvency claim. The same loss cannot be collected twice, although a separate historical EU261 compensation debt may remain distinct from the ticket refund.

Evidence checklist and order of action

  1. Save the PLAY booking confirmation, e-ticket, OG flight details and receipt.
  2. Record whether the purchase was flight-only, a package or part of one through itinerary.
  3. Keep the cancellation notice or evidence of the historical delay and actual final arrival.
  4. Download card statements, OTA correspondence and any accepted but unpaid claim.
  5. Ask the card issuer, organiser, agent and insurer which deadline applies, then file in time.
  6. Check current Icelandic authority or insolvency information before sending a creditor claim.
  7. Keep each remedy separate: fare refund, replacement transport, care expenses and fixed compensation.

The airline A-Z directory helps identify a replacement flight's actual operator. It also prevents a past PLAY claim from being sent to another airline merely because that airline carried the passenger home.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

Is PLAY Airlines still operating?

No. PLAY ceased operations and cancelled all flights on 29 September 2025. Former claim and service pages should not be treated as live airline channels.

Did PLAY's closure erase an older EU261 claim?

No. A right arising from an eligible flight while PLAY operated is not retrospectively erased. Insolvency can nevertheless make collection slower, procedural or only partially successful.

Can a past PLAY flight from North America qualify for EUR 600?

Potentially. PLAY was an Icelandic EEA carrier, so an eligible PLAY-operated arrival into the protected area could be covered. Distance, final delay, cause and itinerary still have to satisfy the regulation.

Will EU261 automatically pay for my new replacement ticket?

No. EU261 states duties of the operating carrier but is not an airline-insolvency insurance fund. Preserve the replacement cost and test the airline debt, package protection, card remedy and insurance separately.

Should I request a chargeback for an unused PLAY ticket?

It is often a practical route for a card-funded service that was never supplied. Eligibility and deadlines depend on the card scheme and national law, so contact the issuer promptly and provide complete evidence.

Can the Icelandic Transport Authority make the insolvent airline pay me?

The authority explains and enforces passenger-rights rules within its remit, but a finding about entitlement does not guarantee full recovery from an insolvent company. Check the current complaint and creditor procedures before filing.
