Lufthansa denied boarding: overbooking compensation and choices

Short answer: when Lufthansa involuntarily refuses boarding despite a confirmed reservation, timely presentation and valid documents, EU261 or UK261 can require immediate fixed compensation, care and a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. A passenger who voluntarily exchanges the seat for agreed benefits has a different contract and should record every term before accepting.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Overbooking is common, but denied boarding also covers some operational refusals. Legitimate health, safety, security or documentation grounds are excluded.

Volunteer or involuntary refusal?

Ask staff to state whether the record shows “volunteer,” “denied boarding,” “late at gate” or a document issue. That code can shape the later dispute.

Conditions for protection

The passenger should have a confirmed reservation and present for check-in as Lufthansa specified, or no later than 45 minutes before published departure when no time was stated. All travel documents and security conditions must be satisfied.

Online check-in failure does not necessarily end the claim if Lufthansa instructed the passenger to use a desk and they arrived in time. Preserve app errors, queue photographs and baggage-drop timestamps.

At the gate, do not leave voluntarily merely because staff say the flight is full. Ask what benefit is offered, what replacement is confirmed and whether declining means Lufthansa will deny boarding involuntarily.

Volunteers negotiate their benefits

Before refusing passengers against their will, the operating carrier must first call for volunteers willing to surrender reservations in exchange for benefits under agreed conditions. The value may be cash, voucher, mileage or another negotiated package.

A volunteer also receives reimbursement or rerouting as set out in the agreement and Article 8. Get these details in writing:

  • value, currency and payment timing;
  • voucher restrictions and expiry;
  • confirmed replacement flight and cabin;
  • hotel, meals and airport transfer;
  • handling of checked baggage;
  • what happens if the replacement is disrupted.

The standard fixed denied-boarding payment is not automatically added for a volunteer. Negotiate with that distinction in mind.

Involuntary denied boarding

If insufficient volunteers come forward, Lufthansa can deny boarding but must compensate passengers immediately and provide Article 8 and Article 9 assistance. For EU261, starting amounts are:

Journey distanceFixed amount
1,500 km or lessEUR 250
intra-EU over 1,500 km, and other journeys from 1,500 to 3,500 kmEUR 400
other journeys over 3,500 kmEUR 600

UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. The amount may be reduced by 50% when rerouting reaches the final destination within the distance-based two-, three- or four-hour limits.

Payment by voucher requires informed agreement. A passenger may request money instead.

Refund, rerouting and care

Involuntarily bumped passengers choose reimbursement, earliest rerouting or later-date rerouting subject to seats. Lufthansa should not present a refund as the only option when the passenger still needs to travel.

Meals and refreshments must match the wait. An overnight replacement can require a hotel and transfer. These benefits are additional to fixed compensation.

Example: Frankfurt–Chicago is oversold and Lufthansa moves a passenger to the next day. The passenger can receive EUR 600, subject to any valid reduction, plus overnight care and rerouting. The ticket price is not automatically refunded if the passenger takes the replacement flight.

Example: Munich–Paris is oversold and rerouting arrives 90 minutes late. The EUR 250 amount may be reduced to EUR 125 because arrival falls inside the two-hour limit for the shortest distance band.

Connections and cabin changes

On one booking, use the final ticketed destination for distance and rerouted arrival. A feeder refusal in London which causes arrival in Bangkok a day late is not valued only as London–Frankfurt.

Moving a passenger from Business to Economy while still carrying them on the flight is a downgrade, not denied boarding. Article 10 percentage reimbursement applies to the affected sector, and a separate fixed claim requires another qualifying disruption. See the Lufthansa downgrade guide.

If Lufthansa denies the original flight but reroutes in a lower cabin, both legal categories may arise. Document the refusal and cabin separately.

Codeshares and Lufthansa Group airlines

The operating carrier is responsible for EU261 or UK261 denied boarding. An LH-coded service performed by another airline is claimed from that operator, even if Lufthansa sold the ticket.

Lufthansa City Airlines, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings are not interchangeable legal entities. Read the “operated by” line and obtain the airport refusal record. The operating-carrier guide provides the identification steps.

Documentation disputes

Airlines may reasonably refuse passengers without required travel documents. Check official entry and transit requirements, including electronic authorisations. Advice from a booking site is not authoritative.

If Lufthansa rejects documents that were valid, ask for the exact rule and database response. Preserve passport pages, visa, residence permit, onward ticket and government guidance effective on the travel date. A mistaken carrier decision can remain denied boarding under the regulation.

Security or health refusals require their own facts. Aggressive conduct or a genuine safety risk can justify denial. A disability alone cannot be treated as a safety reason without complying with accessibility law and individual assessment.

Make the claim

Obtain written confirmation at the airport. Submit the reservation, e-ticket, boarding pass or check-in proof, gate arrival evidence, refusal reason, replacement itinerary and final arrival. State whether Lufthansa asked for volunteers and whether the passenger accepted any benefit.

Calculate the fixed amount per passenger and list meals, hotel or transfer expenses separately. If Lufthansa paid a partial voucher, attach its terms and explain whether consent was given.

The claim process guide helps organise the submission and case reference.

FAQ

Is Lufthansa overbooking automatically compensable?

Compensation arises when an eligible passenger is involuntarily denied boarding, not merely because the flight was oversold internally.

Do volunteers receive the standard EUR 250–600 payment?

Not automatically. Volunteers receive the negotiated benefit and agreed transport arrangements.

Can Lufthansa pay denied-boarding compensation as a voucher?

Only with informed passenger agreement; monetary payment remains available under the regulation.

What if I was denied boarding for a visa problem?

A genuine missing document can justify refusal, while a Lufthansa error about valid documentation can be challenged with authoritative proof.

Can denied boarding and downgrade reimbursement coexist?

Yes when rerouting after the refusal places the passenger in a lower cabin, because the two remedies address different events.
