Lufthansa delayed or lost baggage: tracing, expenses and compensation
Short answer: report missing Lufthansa baggage before leaving the arrival airport, obtain a Property Irregularity Report and use Lufthansa's tracing channel. Buy only reasonable necessities, keep itemised receipts and submit a written expense claim within 21 days after the bag is returned. A bag not delivered within 21 days can be treated as lost under the Montreal Convention.

First actions at the airport
| Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| report at Lufthansa or handling-agent baggage services | creates the tracing record while arrival data is available |
| obtain the PIR reference | links later updates and documents to the incident |
| check name, bag-tag number and delivery address | prevents avoidable tracing and courier errors |
| keep boarding pass and baggage receipt | proves carriage and checked-bag identity |
| photograph remaining luggage and carousel information | preserves contemporaneous context |
| ask about delivery and interim-expense instructions | records what Lufthansa told the passenger |
A PIR is crucial operational evidence, but it is not always the written legal claim required by the Montreal Convention. Complete both steps.
Track the bag with Lufthansa
Lufthansa directs passengers to report baggage irregularities online or at the airport and to use the file reference for status updates. Enter a reliable address and contact number, especially on a multi-city trip. Notify the carrier if the passenger moves before delivery.
Do not rely on an electronic tracker alone. An AirTag or similar device can help identify location, but airport security and baggage teams decide when and how a bag can be retrieved. Provide the information calmly through the tracing file rather than attempting restricted-area access.
If the itinerary involved several airlines, start with the baggage desk at the final airport and identify every operating carrier. Keep the tag showing where the bag was checked through. Montreal Convention rules for successive carriage can affect which carrier may ultimately be pursued.
Reasonable replacement purchases
Delayed baggage liability compensates proven damage caused by the delay, subject to the carrier's defence that it took all reasonable measures or that such measures were impossible. Purchases should therefore be necessary, proportionate and connected to the time without the bag.
Common items include basic toiletries, underwear, simple clothing and essential equipment needed for the trip. A business traveller attending a meeting may reasonably need different clothing from a passenger returning home with alternatives available.
Example: Lufthansa fails to deliver a bag on arrival in Toronto for a five-day visit. The passenger buys modest toiletries and two changes of clothes, keeps receipts and stops purchasing after delivery the next evening. The causal file is strong.
Example: a bag is delayed on the final flight home to London. The passenger buys an expensive new wardrobe despite having clothes at home. Lufthansa can reasonably challenge necessity and mitigation.
Avoid treating any informal percentage mentioned by staff as the legal limit. Claim actual reasonable loss and let Lufthansa explain any depreciation or partial-payment approach.
Rental instead of purchase
For specialist equipment, renting may be cheaper and more proportionate than buying. Ski clothing, a child seat or formalwear can require a fact-specific choice. Preserve quotations and explain why the selected solution was practical.
Medication should normally travel in cabin baggage where security rules permit. If checked medicine is delayed, contact a medical professional and insurer rather than replacing prescription items without advice. Keep clinical and pharmacy evidence for any resulting claim.
When delayed baggage becomes lost
Under the Montreal Convention, a passenger can enforce rights for loss when the carrier admits the bag is lost or it has not arrived within 21 days after it should have arrived. Lufthansa may continue tracing after that point, but the passenger need not wait indefinitely before submitting a loss inventory.
Prepare a contents list with:
- item description and brand;
- approximate purchase date;
- original price and currency;
- proof of purchase where available;
- current replacement evidence;
- fair value after age and use.
Receipts, photographs, warranty records and card statements can corroborate ownership. Do not value used contents as brand-new without explanation. Depreciation is common because the claim concerns actual loss.
The suitcase itself is part of the loss valuation. Jewellery, electronics, cash, documents and other valuables placed in checked baggage can face exclusions or proof difficulties. A special declaration of interest made at check-in can raise the recoverable ceiling where the carrier accepted the declaration and any supplement.
The 1,519 SDR ceiling
The International Civil Aviation Organization revised the Montreal baggage limit to 1,519 SDR per passenger from 28 December 2024. SDR is an International Monetary Fund accounting unit whose currency value changes daily.
This figure is not EUR 1,519 and not a guaranteed award. It caps the combined proven baggage loss for the passenger unless a valid higher special declaration applies. Two missing suitcases checked by one traveller share one ceiling; two travellers ordinarily have separate limits.
Calculate the claim in the purchase currencies and show a total. Currency conversion can be performed at the legally relevant date by the paying carrier or court. Avoid presenting a stale internet conversion as a fixed statutory amount.
Baggage and EU261 are different
Montreal baggage liability is separate from EU261 or UK261 flight compensation. A passenger can have both when a qualifying flight disruption and baggage problem occur, but each head requires its own evidence.
Example: Lufthansa arrives in Frankfurt four hours late due to an ordinary technical fault and the checked bag follows two days later. The passenger may claim fixed delay compensation plus reasonable baggage-delay purchases, subject to separate rules and no duplication.
A late suitcase alone does not create EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. Those amounts concern flight delay, cancellation and denied boarding. Use the Lufthansa delay guide for the flight test.
Written claim after delivery
Once the bag is returned, inspect it and record the delivery date and time. Submit the written delayed-baggage claim within 21 days from receipt. Attach the PIR, baggage tag, itinerary, courier record, itemised receipts and payment proof.
Create an expense table showing item, date, amount, necessity and passenger. If some items remain useful after delivery, Lufthansa may consider residual value; answer any reduction with the specific travel need rather than a generic demand for 100%.
For a bag treated as lost, send the inventory promptly and preserve the case history. Do not let tracing messages distract from the two-year period for court action. The baggage deadline guide explains every clock.
Delivery and further damage
Photograph the bag when the courier returns it. If it arrives damaged or with contents missing, notify Lufthansa immediately and submit a written damage complaint within seven days from receipt. The delay claim and damage claim can use the same PIR reference but should list losses separately.
Check seals and zips before signing an unqualified receipt where practical. A courier signature is not necessarily a waiver, yet contemporaneous evidence is valuable.
FAQ
Is a Lufthansa PIR the same as a compensation claim?
No. It starts tracing and records the incident, but a separate written claim with expenses or loss details is still required.
What can I buy while my Lufthansa bag is delayed?
Buy proportionate necessities for the trip and keep itemised receipts, considering what is already available at the destination.
When is Lufthansa baggage legally treated as lost?
The passenger can invoke loss rights when Lufthansa admits loss or the bag has not arrived within 21 days after it should have arrived.
Will Lufthansa automatically pay 1,519 SDR?
No. That is the current per-passenger ceiling for proven baggage damage, subject to the Convention and any defences.
Can I claim both flight delay and baggage expenses?
Yes when each separate legal test is satisfied and the same loss is not recovered twice.
