LOT cancellations and EU 261

LOT Cancelled Flight Compensation and Refunds

If LOT Polish Airlines cancelled your flight, you may have two separate rights: refund or rerouting for the ticket, and fixed EU 261 compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 when the cancellation qualifies.

Quick answer: what can you claim after a LOT cancellation?

A LOT cancellation does not create only one right. First, you should be offered a choice between refund, rerouting as soon as possible, or rerouting at a later date under comparable transport conditions. Second, you may also have a fixed compensation claim if LOT told you about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure and no valid exception applies.

LOT is an EU airline, so EU 261 can cover LOT flights departing from the EU and many LOT-operated flights arriving in the EU from outside Europe. That includes routes such as Chicago to Warsaw, New York to Warsaw, Toronto to Warsaw, Delhi to Warsaw and Seoul to Warsaw when LOT is the operating carrier.

When LOT informed youCompensation positionWhat to check
More than 14 days before departureUsually no fixed compensationRefund or rerouting rights can still apply.
7-14 days before departureCompensation may be dueLOT avoids compensation only if rerouting departs no more than 2 hours early and arrives less than 4 hours late.
Less than 7 days before departureCompensation may be dueLOT avoids compensation only if rerouting departs no more than 1 hour early and arrives less than 2 hours late.
At the airport or on the day of travelOften strong if no extraordinary causeKeep cancellation screens, messages and rebooking details.
Cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstancesCompensation can be refusedLOT must prove the event and reasonable measures, not just state a broad reason.

Refund and compensation are different

Accepting a refund for the ticket does not automatically remove a separate EUR 250-600 compensation claim. Check both rights before closing the case.

Refund, rerouting or rebooking: your first choice

When LOT cancels a covered flight, the immediate passenger right is a choice. You can ask for reimbursement of the ticket, rerouting to your final destination at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting at a later date if that suits your travel plan and seats are available. LOT's own refund information says cancelled-flight refund applications are processed back to the same form of payment after acceptance.

OptionWhat it meansPractical LOT point
RefundMoney back for the unused ticket, and sometimes used legs if the journey no longer serves its purposeLOT says refunds for cancelled flights are processed back to the original payment form after the application is accepted.
Rerouting at the earliest opportunityAlternative transport to the final destination as soon as possibleCare rights continue while you wait for the replacement journey.
Rerouting at a later dateTravel later under comparable transport conditions when seats are availableUseful if the cancellation ruins the original purpose of the trip.
Return flight to the first departure pointApplies where relevant for connecting journeysImportant when a cancellation breaks a connection and the rest of the trip no longer makes sense.

Be careful if the only visible option is a voucher or travel credit. A voucher may be useful, but it should not replace money unless you choose it knowingly. If LOT cancelled the flight and you want cash, ask clearly for a refund to the original payment method.

For voucher pressure and cash wording, use our airline voucher instead of refund guide.

The 14-day rule for LOT cancelled flight compensation

Fixed compensation depends heavily on timing. If LOT informed you of the cancellation at least 14 days before the scheduled departure, fixed compensation is usually not due, though refund or rerouting rights still remain. If notice was shorter, the replacement-flight timing becomes critical.

For cancellations announced 7 to 14 days before departure, LOT can avoid compensation if the alternative flight departs no more than 2 hours earlier and arrives less than 4 hours after the original arrival time. For cancellations announced less than 7 days before departure, the stricter exception is no more than 1 hour early departure and less than 2 hours late arrival.

Save the first cancellation message. The airline carries the burden of proving if and when you were personally informed, so the timestamp of the first email, SMS or app notification can decide the case.

How much can you claim from LOT?

If the LOT cancellation qualifies, the amount is fixed by distance. It is not based on your ticket price, cabin class or the amount you spent on a replacement flight. Each passenger can have a separate claim.

Flight distanceEU 261 amountTypical LOT examples
Up to 1,500 kmEUR 250Warsaw - Berlin, Warsaw - Vienna, Krakow - Frankfurt
1,500-3,500 kmEUR 400Warsaw - Madrid, Warsaw - Athens, Warsaw - Lisbon
Over 3,500 kmEUR 600Warsaw - Chicago, Warsaw - New York, Warsaw - Toronto, Warsaw - Seoul
Replacement arrives close to original timeMay be reduced or not dueEU 261 has timing exceptions and possible 50% reductions for some rerouting outcomes.

Long-haul LOT cancellations are often high-value claims. Warsaw to Chicago, New York, Newark, Toronto, Delhi or Seoul will usually fall above 3,500 km, so the compensation band can reach EUR 600 per passenger when all legal conditions are met.

Warsaw connections and cancelled LOT flights

Cancellations through Warsaw can be confusing because passengers often receive several route options at once: a new feeder flight, a later long-haul segment, an overnight stay or a return to the departure point. If the journey was booked as one itinerary, look at the original final destination and the replacement journey offered by LOT.

If the cancellation breaks the purpose of the trip, reimbursement can cover more than the single cancelled segment in some situations. If you choose rerouting, keep the final arrival time because it can affect whether compensation is still payable or reduced.

For delay-style issues after rerouting, see our LOT flight delay compensation guide. For the whole LOT claim landscape, use the main LOT Polish Airlines compensation guide.

When LOT can refuse cancellation compensation

LOT can refuse fixed compensation if it proves that the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. This is a fact-specific defence. The label in the first email is not the end of the analysis.

Reason given by LOTClaim impactHow to read it
Aircraft technical issueOften worth challengingOrdinary technical problems are not automatically extraordinary.
Crew shortage or operational planningOften airline responsibilityInternal resourcing issues normally need a strong explanation from LOT.
Late aircraft rotationDepends on root causeAsk what disrupted the earlier aircraft and why it made cancellation unavoidable.
Severe weather at the airportMay be extraordinaryThe weather must be connected to your specific flight and timing.
Air traffic control or airport closureMay be extraordinaryExternal restrictions can be valid, but the facts still matter.
Security or political instabilityMay be extraordinaryLOT should explain the specific event and the measures taken.

Ask for the exact cause

A strong refusal should explain what happened, when it happened, how it affected your exact flight and what LOT did to reduce the disruption. Generic "operational reasons" or "technical reasons" deserve scrutiny.

What to do when LOT cancels at short notice

  1. Save the cancellation notice immediately. The timestamp can decide whether the 14-day rule is met.
  2. Write down your preferred choice. Refund, earliest rerouting and later rebooking are different options.
  3. Keep replacement-flight details. Departure and arrival times are needed for the timing exceptions.
  4. Ask for care if you wait. Meals, hotel and transport can be owed while you wait for rerouting.
  5. Do not rely on a phone call alone. Follow up in writing so the chosen option and requested compensation are recorded.

How to claim LOT cancelled flight compensation

Use separate wording for the ticket remedy and the fixed compensation. For the ticket, state whether you want a refund or rerouting. For compensation, state that you are claiming under EU 261, give the distance band and ask for payment in cash or bank transfer, not a voucher unless you choose one.

  1. Confirm coverage. Check whether the flight departed from the EU or was a LOT-operated flight arriving in the EU.
  2. Check notice and rerouting. Compare cancellation notice date, replacement departure and replacement arrival with the original itinerary.
  3. Calculate the amount. Use EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 based on route distance.
  4. Submit the claim with evidence. Attach cancellation notices, booking details, rerouting screenshots and receipts.
  5. Challenge weak refusals. Ask LOT to prove the extraordinary circumstance and reasonable measures if it refuses compensation.

FAQ: LOT cancelled flight compensation

1. Can I get compensation if LOT cancelled my flight?

Yes, if EU 261 covers the flight, the cancellation was announced less than 14 days before departure, the replacement flight did not meet the timing exceptions, and LOT cannot prove extraordinary circumstances.

2. Does a LOT refund replace compensation?

No. A ticket refund or rerouting is separate from fixed compensation. In some cases you can receive a refund for the cancelled flight and still claim EUR 250-600 compensation.

3. What if LOT offered me another flight?

Rerouting can reduce or remove compensation only if it meets the strict EU 261 timing rules. Check how early the replacement departed and how late it arrived compared with the original booking.

4. How much compensation is due for a cancelled LOT flight?

The fixed EU 261 amounts are EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger, depending mainly on distance. Long-haul LOT routes to or from Warsaw often sit in the EUR 600 band when eligible.

5. Can LOT refuse because of weather or air traffic control?

Possibly, if the event was an extraordinary circumstance and LOT took reasonable measures. A generic phrase is not enough by itself; the airline should connect the event to your exact cancellation.

6. Do I have to accept a LOT voucher after cancellation?

No. Under EU 261, cash compensation must be paid in money unless you give signed agreement to a voucher. For ticket refunds, you can ask for money back rather than a travel credit.

7. Where do I submit a LOT cancellation claim?

Refund requests use LOT refund channels, while compensation or post-journey complaints can be sent through LOT claims channels. ClaimWinger can also check eligibility and handle the airline correspondence.
