KM Malta Airlines, Malta Air or Wizz Air Malta: who is responsible?
Short answer: KM Malta Airlines Limited, Malta Air and Wizz Air Malta Limited are three different airlines. KM is Malta's full-service national carrier; Malta Air is an airline within Ryanair Group; Wizz Air Malta is a Wizz Air group company. Send a passenger-rights claim to the operating carrier shown on the itinerary, not to the company whose name merely sounds closest to "Malta".

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The airport, aircraft registration and country in the legal name do not settle liability. A ticket sold by one brand can be operated by another group airline, while a wet lease can display a supplier's aircraft and crew without transferring every passenger-facing duty.
Corporate and carriage sources were checked on 13 August 2026. Always recheck the ticket because group structures and operating arrangements can change.
Identity table
| Name on documents | Corporate context | Claim starting point |
|---|---|---|
| KM Malta Airlines Limited | Maltese national carrier operating since 31 March 2024 | KM when it operated the affected flight |
| Malta Air | Ryanair Group airline | Operator identified on Ryanair itinerary or boarding pass |
| Wizz Air Malta Limited | Wizz Air group company registered in Malta | Wizz entity named as operating carrier |
| Air Malta | Former airline, legally distinct from KM | Verify legacy process and travel date |
Do not shorten every name to "Malta Airlines" in correspondence. Use the complete legal name and flight information.
Read the itinerary in the right order
Start with the affected sector, not the booking website. Locate:
- marketing flight number;
- "operated by" statement;
- ticket issuer and ticket number;
- carrier named on the boarding pass;
- aircraft or crew supplier if disclosed;
- legal name in the applicable conditions of carriage.
The operating carrier is generally responsible for EU261 delay, cancellation and denied-boarding duties. The ticket issuer or travel agent may still handle a fare refund. These roles can belong to different businesses.
The KM codeshare guide explains partner flights. For old Air Malta travel, use the legacy claim guide.
KM Malta Airlines Limited
KM received a Maltese Air Operator Certificate and operating licence before its first flight on 31 March 2024. Its conditions define "we" as KM Malta Airlines Limited and say that codeshare services may be operated by another carrier, which should be disclosed when the reservation is made.
When KM actually operates the flight, its EU-carrier status means EU261 normally covers EU departures and KM-operated arrivals into the EU from third countries. Use KM's Help Centre for the first post-travel claim and retain its acknowledgement.
A KM flight code does not conclusively prove operation. Current partnerships can place KM's code on another airline's service beyond a connection point.
Malta Air within Ryanair Group
Ryanair Holdings identifies Malta Air as one of its group airlines. Ryanair's corporate announcement described the acquisition of the Maltese start-up and transfer of aircraft to its Maltese certificate. Malta Air is not KM Malta Airlines and did not become the Maltese national carrier through similarity of name.
A passenger can book through Ryanair branding and find Malta Air as operator. Use the operator shown on the itinerary for EU261 and follow the relevant Ryanair group claim process. Do not send the case to KM because departure or arrival occurred in Malta.
If an airport display shows a Ryanair flight number, preserve the boarding pass and e-ticket because the underlying group operator may still matter to the legal respondent.
Wizz Air Malta Limited
Wizz Air's company information lists Wizz Air Malta Limited as a separate group company with its registered seat at Malta International Airport. Wizz's documents explain that it began commercial operations in 2023.
Wizz Air Malta is not Malta Air and is not KM. A Wizz-branded booking can identify Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air Hungary or another group airline as operator. Use the entity printed for the sector and the Wizz claim route.
EU261 coverage can be broad because these are EU operators, but corporate identity still matters for service, escalation and court documents.
Aircraft livery is only a clue
An airline may use a wet-leased aircraft and crew. In that arrangement, passenger-facing operational responsibility can remain with the airline on whose behalf the flight is carried out. By contrast, a codeshare partner may independently operate its own flight under both airlines' marketing codes.
Do not infer the respondent from cabin uniforms, safety card branding or aircraft registration alone. Ask which airline performed or intended to perform the flight under the passenger contract and how the arrangement was disclosed.
Refund and compensation can follow different paths
If KM operated the disruption but an OTA or partner issued the ticket, fixed compensation normally goes to KM, while the unused fare may be returned through the issuer. State both requests distinctly.
If another airline operated a KM-coded flight, direct the fixed claim to that operator. KM may still help with ticket servicing or connection information but should not be treated as liable without the operating-carrier basis.
For baggage on successive carriage, the Montreal Convention can permit claims against specified carriers beyond the simple EU261 operator rule. Preserve bag tags and all sectors.
Correct a claim sent to the wrong airline
Do not open several parallel claims without explanation. Reply to the rejection, request confirmation of the actual operator and ask for any transfer reference. Then submit to the correct entity with:
- complete itinerary;
- operating-carrier line;
- original wrong-recipient case number;
- disruption evidence;
- requested remedy and amount;
- explanation of any fare issuer role.
Calendar existing deadlines. Sending a claim to the wrong company may not preserve a limitation period against the correct defendant.
FAQ
Is Malta Air the same as KM Malta Airlines?
No. Malta Air is a Ryanair Group airline, while KM Malta Airlines Limited is a separate Maltese national carrier.
Is Wizz Air Malta part of KM?
No. Wizz Air Malta Limited belongs to the Wizz Air group and has its own corporate identity.
Which airline pays EU261 compensation?
The operating carrier is generally responsible. Read the "operated by" field for the affected sector rather than relying on the seller's brand.
Does a Maltese aircraft registration make KM responsible?
No. Registration identifies the aircraft's registry, not necessarily the airline legally operating the passenger's flight.
Can a refund go through a different company?
Yes. The operating airline can owe statutory compensation while a ticket issuer or agent processes reimbursement of the fare.
