KM Malta Airlines refund, voucher or rerouting: choose correctly

Short answer: after KM Malta Airlines cancels a protected flight, the passenger chooses monetary reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity or rerouting later at a convenient date subject to seats. A voucher requires voluntary signed agreement under the current EU261 wording. Refund and rerouting are alternatives for the same transport, so decide whether reaching the destination or ending the journey matters more before selecting.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The choice does not automatically settle fixed compensation or care expenses. Keep those claims separate.

This comparison reflects KM and EU rules checked on 13 August 2026. The adopted reform's future automatic-refund procedures were not yet applicable; current reimbursement is due within seven days.

Monetary refundJourney is abandonedAirline no longer carries passenger onward on refunded transport
Earliest reroutingPassenger still needs destination soonKM must arrange comparable transport
Later reroutingPassenger prefers another dateSubject to seat availability
VoucherPassenger values credit and accepts restrictionsMonetary refund is exchanged by consent

Do not click a refund link merely because the next KM flight shown is late. Ask about other carriers and routes when earliest transport matters.

Monetary reimbursement

Current Article 8 requires repayment of the ticket price for unused travel. If a partly completed journey has become pointless, relevant used portions and a return flight to first departure can also be due.

Refund should use cash, bank transfer, bank order or cheque. A voucher or other service requires signed agreement. Where an agency collected payment, it may process the fare through the ticketing chain, but KM remains responsible for offering the statutory choice after its cancellation.

On a partly used itinerary, specify every coupon. If completed travel still served its purpose, reimbursement normally concerns the unused portion. If the disruption made the whole journey pointless, explain the original purpose and request relevant used parts plus return to origin. This avoids an automatic partial refund that fails to address the actual Article 8 choice.

Save the option selected, amount, payment method and promised date. A card refund can take banking time after the airline issues it; ask for evidence of processing if it does not appear.

Earliest rerouting

Rerouting should reach the final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions. It is not automatically limited to KM's next service. KM's own conditions contemplate its services, another carrier or another mutually agreed mode.

Ask about:

  • partner and other-airline seats;
  • reasonable route through another airport;
  • ground transport needed for an alternative airport;
  • confirmed, not standby, booking;
  • baggage transfer;
  • meal and hotel care while waiting.

The passenger should not be forced to accept a materially later route merely because it is cheaper for KM, but reasonableness and actual availability matter.

Rerouting later

Article 8 also allows travel at a later date at the passenger's convenience, subject to seats. This is not an unlimited open ticket. Agree the replacement date and fare conditions in writing.

Care during a voluntary later-date wait is not the same as care while stranded for earliest rerouting. Once a passenger chooses to return home and travel weeks later, ongoing hotel costs are generally not an airline care obligation.

Preserve the reissued ticket and confirm that no fare difference or change fee was charged for statutory rerouting.

Voucher evaluation

Before accepting credit, record:

TermQuestion
ValueDoes it include full refundable fare and any bonus?
ExpiryBy when must booking and travel occur?
TransferabilityCan another person use it?
RoutesKM-operated only or partner flights too?
Residual balanceIs unused value retained?
Insolvency riskIs the credit protected?
Settlement wordingWhich claims are being waived?

A voucher can be sensible when its bonus and flexibility are genuinely valuable. It should not be presented as the only legal remedy.

Do not confuse SkyBux, a gift voucher and a disruption voucher. Their issuers, expiry rules and eligible purchases can differ. Save the specific terms displayed at acceptance because later general conditions may not reproduce the offer made to the passenger.

KM gift vouchers, survey vouchers and disruption credits can have different terms. Do not infer one product's rules from another.

Fixed compensation remains separate

Cancellation compensation can be EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger depending on distance, notice, replacement timing and cause. Accepting rerouting or a fare refund does not automatically waive it.

Care expenses are also separate. A meal voucher supplied at the airport is not the same as a travel-credit settlement. List every remedy and payment under its own heading.

The KM cancellation guide explains the 14-day test. The KM care guide covers receipts.

If KM does not reroute

Request the earliest option in writing and give KM a reasonable opportunity to act. If no effective transport is offered and delay would be substantial, self-booking comparable travel can be recoverable. Choose a proportionate route and preserve availability screenshots, contact attempts and receipts.

Do not buy a premium cabin when the original was Economy without necessity. Do not accept a full refund first and then present replacement costs as rerouting without explaining why the refund did not represent an informed choice.

Use the replacement flight and train guide before purchasing.

Record the decision

Send a concise message stating the selected Article 8 option. Quote flight, passenger, booking and final destination. If choosing rerouting, specify earliest or later-date travel. If choosing money, reject voucher conversion expressly.

Keep all acknowledgements. The future 14-day automatic mechanism and nine-month complaint rule were not current on the date above, so enforce the present seven-day refund and existing national deadlines.

FAQ

Can KM make me accept a voucher?

No. Under current EU261, voucher reimbursement requires the passenger's signed agreement.

Can I take a refund and still ask KM to fly me?

Normally no for the same transport. Reimbursement and rerouting are alternative choices.

Must rerouting use a KM flight?

No automatic restriction exists. Another airline or agreed transport may be required when it provides the reasonable earliest route.

Does accepting rerouting remove compensation?

No general waiver follows. Notice, arrival timing, distance and cause still decide the fixed claim.

Is care due while I wait weeks for later travel?

Ongoing care usually supports passengers awaiting earliest transport, not a voluntary later date selected for personal convenience.
