KM Malta Airlines cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
Short answer: when KM Malta Airlines cancels a protected flight, the passenger chooses between ticket reimbursement and rerouting at the earliest opportunity or at a later convenient date subject to seats. Care may be due during the wait. A separate payment of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 can apply when notice and replacement timing do not create an exemption and KM cannot prove unavoidable extraordinary circumstances.

What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Do not accept a voucher merely because it appears first in an email. Under the current EU261 rule, reimbursement must be available in money within seven days; a voucher requires the passenger's signed agreement. Rerouting and compensation should be evaluated independently from the refund choice.
This page is based on sources checked on 13 August 2026. The reform approved in July 2026 was not yet applicable. Its later automatic-refund and complaint provisions do not replace the present seven-day reimbursement rule.
Choose the transport remedy first
| Passenger's objective | Current EU261 choice after cancellation |
|---|---|
| End the trip | Reimbursement for unused travel |
| Trip no longer serves its purpose after partial travel | Refund relevant used and unused parts plus return to first departure when appropriate |
| Reach the destination soon | Rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions |
| Travel on another date | Rerouting later at the passenger's convenience, subject to available seats |
These are alternatives for the cancelled transport. A passenger cannot normally take a full refund and also require KM to provide the same onward journey. Before clicking a refund button, compare replacement availability and the real cost of abandoning the booking.
KM's conditions state that, after cancellation or a serious schedule failure, it may carry the passenger on its own service, reroute using another carrier or agreed means, or issue an involuntary refund. The statutory right is not confined to the next KM flight when an earlier reasonable route exists.
The refund, voucher and rerouting guide compares the options. If KM does not provide timely transport and a replacement must be bought, review the self-booked replacement guide before spending.
The 14-day notice test
Fixed cancellation compensation normally depends on when the passenger was informed and what substitute journey KM offered.
| Notice before scheduled departure | Compensation position under current EU261 |
|---|---|
| At least 14 days | Fixed cancellation payment normally not due |
| 7 to under 14 days | No payment if offered rerouting leaves no more than 2 hours early and arrives under 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | No payment if offered rerouting leaves no more than 1 hour early and arrives under 2 hours late |
The airline must prove when the information reached the passenger. Keep the original email header, text message, app notification and travel-agent correspondence. The date on which KM decided internally to cancel is not the same as the date on which the traveller was informed.
If an OTA held the booking contact details, preserve evidence of when the message actually arrived. Court of Justice case law can place the risk of an intermediary's failure to pass on timely notice on the operating carrier unless the passenger authorised the intermediary to receive it in a legally effective way for that purpose.
Calculate the possible fixed amount
When no notice-timing exemption applies, use great-circle distance for the protected journey.
| Journey category | Standard amount per eligible passenger |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| Intra-EU over 1,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other journey from 1,500 to 3,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other journey over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
On a one-ticket connection, final destination can extend beyond Malta. On separate tickets, the cancelled contract generally ends at its own destination. A family of four does not share one statutory amount: each eligible traveller is assessed separately.
When rerouting keeps final arrival within two, three or four hours for the applicable distance band, KM may reduce fixed compensation by half. Compare actual arrival with the original schedule and do not apply a reduction simply because an alternative flight was supplied.
Extraordinary circumstances affect compensation, not the basic choice
KM may avoid the fixed sum if it proves that the cancellation resulted from extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided despite all reasonable measures. The burden is more demanding than naming weather or air-traffic control in a template response.
Ask for the event, location, timing, link to the aircraft or rotation and mitigation attempted. Airport closure, a binding external restriction or unsafe severe weather may qualify. Routine technical maintenance, ordinary crew shortages or commercial consolidation usually need a different analysis.
Even when the defence succeeds, Article 8 transport options and Article 9 care remain. A weather cancellation does not permit an airline to leave a passenger without a refund or reasonable rerouting.
Care while waiting for rerouting
When the passenger chooses the earliest rerouting, KM should provide reasonable meals and refreshments in relation to the wait, communication, and hotel accommodation plus transport where an overnight stay becomes necessary. The duty can continue over multiple nights if the earliest reasonable route is later.
Ask the airport desk or Help Centre for arrangements. If no effective assistance is provided, buy necessities at a proportionate level and keep itemised receipts. Record closed desks, queue length, screenshots and unsuccessful contact attempts. Alcohol, luxury accommodation and unrelated purchases are harder to recover.
Care costs should be claimed separately from EUR 250-600. Extraordinary circumstances do not generally erase care. The KM hotel, meals and transport guide explains evidence and reasonable spending.
Submit a cancellation claim
Keep the original itinerary, e-ticket receipt, booking reference, cancellation message, all replacement offers, boarding documents for rerouting and actual final-arrival proof. Add receipts and bank details. If the booking contains several passengers, identify each claimant and whether one person has authority to act for the others.
A useful claim contains four separate headings:
- chosen Article 8 remedy and whether it has been delivered;
- fixed compensation by passenger and distance;
- care expenses with receipts;
- request for the precise cancellation cause and reasonable-measures evidence.
Submit through KM's post-travel Help Centre and save the case number. A refund request may involve the ticket issuer where an agency took payment, but the EU261 compensation claim normally belongs with the operating carrier. If KM refuses or does not answer, follow the KM claim rejection guide and select an enforcement route based on the incident location.
FAQ
Must I accept a KM Malta Airlines voucher?
No. Under the current EU261 reimbursement rule, a voucher requires signed passenger agreement. Ask for money when that is your choice and keep the request confirmation.
Can I choose another airline for rerouting?
Rerouting at the earliest opportunity is not automatically limited to KM services. Comparable transport on another carrier may be required when it provides a reasonable earlier route.
Is compensation due when cancellation notice arrived 15 days ahead?
Fixed cancellation compensation is normally excluded once notice was received at least 14 days before departure. Refund or rerouting rights still remain.
Does an airport closure cancel my right to a refund?
No. A proven airport closure may remove fixed compensation, but the basic choice between reimbursement and rerouting continues.
Can I claim expenses after taking a replacement flight?
Yes, reasonable care expenses during the necessary wait may be recoverable when KM did not provide assistance. Keep itemised receipts and evidence of the rerouting timeline.
